Turn Down the Volume?
Limiting colors in a space can dial down the volume and busy factor, but decorating with less objects can also literally reduce volume (and heighten calm).
The combination of tones and temperatures also matters. Is the trim contrasting sharply with walls? Would it all feel more harmonious with low or no contrast?
Even high contrast can be a friend to a sanctuary…

You need not be a minimalist to embrace California quiet or cool. Living and dining areas at Patina Farm were layered with Old World and art.
Calm Earthy Accents
Pale neutrals on the wall and for large anchor pieces can be a great foundation.
If you love sage green (we looked at gorgeous examples HERE), bringing it inside can make up for a lack outdoors.
Try a pretty green paint color or nature-themed wallpaper:
Add instant character with still life moments. I loved this one from Brooke Giannetti on the fireplace mantel in her Patina Farm kitchen:
Unfussy, Uncluttered & Textural
I love how Finding Lovely wrapped the pendant light (below) in rope to customize it and keep things feeling rustically rich with character.
Shiny metallic finishes for lighting are common and pretty, but they can also shout. Sometimes relaxed or raw finishes keep the fussy factor at bay.
Pantry as sanctuary? Sure.
I admire the way Artichoke outfitted this utilitarian space above with airy shelves. Also, note how Shaker-style peg hooks read unfussy and somehow chic.
