As a culture, we’re less inclined to recline on them since it requires slowing down or gazing outward to the neighborhood where *gasp* actual humans may pass. Private porches get more use, but isn’t it curious we entertain romantic notions about the architecture of homes with inviting front porches?

Pretty Porches
Maybe it’s just me who thinks this deeply about cultural change and porches (forgive!). The psychotherapist me will always have curiosity about human behavior and home. We have two pretty porches at home, and I enjoy both of them depending on the time of day.
An Adirondack chair on the back deck (above) is where I listen to a podcast or scribble in a journal. (The middle section of the turret is where the breakfast/sunroom is located.) A large covered porch at the entrance of our home is where I’ll curl up with a book on the teak bench (you can see it near the soaring column below) and listen to the birds.
Along with the bucolic setting (on a forest preserve), our grand covered porch was a feature that sold me on this Georgian style home in 2021.

There’s something utterly irresistible about wide wrap around porches all over the South.
So perfect for hot weather and buffering homes where the sun’s harsh rays are too much for the interiors.
My fondest childhood memories at my grandma’s home feature a metal glider on her front porch.

After blue and green, I think pink would be so fun.
Sometimes I’ll bring my rattan chairs to the front porch because they are so much more comfy than the wood bench. I love them since they work just as easily inside for a breezy feel.
I could definitely add a pretty outdoor rug to my front porch.
This one is neutral yet happy and coastal, and I can imagine it working in any number of spaces.

Here’s a clever hack for the chain which may be necessary for a porch swing yet look less than appealing:
It’s a small thing, but isn’t that little swirl of the rope a nice touch? And don’t even get me started on screen porches! It was the hardest thing for me to leave when we built our dream home years ago, and I put a lot of thought into it, knowing I would be using it all the time.

I always dreamed of adding curtains like Suzanne Kasler’s design below, but we didn’t stay put long enough.
Not sure I have told you this, but our current home is just seven houses away from the home we built all those years ago. A visiting friend recently asked me if I miss the old one. The other house is huge with a lot of maintenance for two occupants. Our current home has double the outside space and appears bigger from the outside than it is. We’re nearly done with finishing our basement, yet the home is still not overwhelming.
