With so much constant change in culture, climate, and commerce, it’s impressive when a classic remains a classic in the 2020s! We looked at Nancy Meyers inspired coastal chic in THIS and continue here. What is it about her particular coastal aesthetic that resonates with so many decorators and dreamers?

Ideas to Emulate Nancy Meyers Classic Style
When is Nancy Meyers classic coastal aesthetic more than a décor style?
There are plenty of seaside themed objects and decor to pick up at Homegoods and Pottery Barn.
But for a more timeless, thoughtful, classic interior, aim to first understand the sensibilities guiding it. Classic coastal style encompasses admiration for: simplicity, a slower daily pace to allow moments for savoring, and a reverence for the beauty of nature (sea, sky, sand, plants, natural materials).

Secrets to getting barefoot elegance just right? An effortless look is seldom achieved without effort…with experience, you learn when to add more and when to stop.
For example, effortless entertaining typically demands planning and plenty of do-ahead, make-ahead preparations.

Understatement is another quality of laid back coastal classic style. Nothing has to shout or show-off when the goal is a natural, tranquil, earthy, clean look that feels approachable and highly livable.
A bonus for homebody types and those of a certain age? Bare feet. Skipping uncomfortable heels and hair salon appointments.
Classic coastal wardrobe essentials are easy to find, and some of them get better with age. (Just like the pretty young things we are.)

Barefoot elegance and classic style do not require a beach or a breezy summer…you can just claim them.

How Is Coastal Different Than Preppy?
It’s largely semantics, but in my opinion, American preppy style seems to be more buttoned up and self-conscious.
I was obsessed with preppy vibes in middle school and wore out my Topsiders and Izod polos.
“…preppy decor’s roots remain in exoticism as popularized by upper-class European society” – House Beautiful

Prepster decorators may be more interested in chintz, plaid, fussy wallpaper, maximalism, expensive art, and provenance.

I’m sure there’s someone who says that look is possible on a budget, but I associate it with a hefty price tag.

Coastal classic moves a la Nancy Meyers may give #oldmoney vibes, but we can get the look without spending a fortune.

There’s a tranquility that naturally arises when the palette is gentle and natural rhythms of the sea (or lake or river) are influences.
Is a Hamptons Look Realistic?
Diane Keaton’s character in Something’s Gotta Give (Erica Barry) has an oceanside Hamptons beach house with an astronomical price tag. If you’re after a comparable lifestyle look, that’s a highly aspirational desire.

The New York Post described this coastal granny look when it was peaking in 2022 as:

“…very ocean inspired and feels vacation-ey. It also looks effortless and chic and is easy to copy at any price point.” – NY Post
Easy to copy? You can easily find a contractor to slap shiplap or beadboard on the walls, but I would argue that there is plenty of work to get things to appear “easy.”

In fact, it feels like a very traditional American fierceness to work tirelessly for an effortless look and then proceed to uphold an attitude that oh this…it was nothing.

So many of us are out here hustling for our worthiness because maybe it’s all we have ever known.

We don’t slow down to consider more self-respecting alternatives.

Maybe we can’t imagine gently pacing ourselves or admitting an undertaking is a beast because we are fearful of any evidence of weakness or humility.

But there are healthier alternatives if we will slow down to notice what we’re up to! What does any of this philosophical cultural musing have to do with Nancy Meyers coastal types?
“A coastal grandmother doesn’t care for thong bodysuits…She likes heirloom tomatoes and going to bed early.” – Glamour

Hahahaha! The violence of a thong bodysuit to protect the eyes of others from glimpsing panty lines? No, sir. Not on planet beachy mama. Not when heirloom tomatoes and early bedtimes await!
Is Your Coastal IQ More Ina or Martha?
It’s hard to imagine anyone more iconic in her coastal grandmotherhood than Ina Garten.

It isn’t just her chill temperatment or fabulous recipes. She is also utterly chic.

But is her calm lifestyle with days filled with gardening and lunch hostessing realistic for any of us in 2026?

She and Martha are these iconic American businesswomen who fill us with inspiration, but are we executing?

It is still highly countercultural to lower the bar, value rest, and honor “good enough.” MAKE THAT GRUELING WORK SEEM EFFORTLESS, LADIES!

I’m not sure I would have given up that facade of effortlessness had illness not knocked me down and given me seasons of quiet time for contemplation.

Slowing down out of neccessity changed me. Cozy pajama time opened a portal to alternative consciousness where I could see the bottomless pit of my dissatisfaction and strivings.

When will we feel satisfied? Is it dependent on how picture perfect the trappings and accolades are? What happens when we decide to choose satisfaction and enoughness on our own terms?
Nancy Meyers Romance for Home
Emulating an effortless, Something’s Gotta Give look? Gurrrl, It’s Complicated and takes a little thought.
Study Her Movie Sets
This is my kind of homework, and you can start by searching my archives and using the search bar to collect coastal inspo.

Look closer at the rooms in her movies and the layering.
Make a list of finishes you admire while you’re watching and take notes about color stories and window treatments.

Don’t forget it’s all fantasy…the interiors from Erica’s Hampton house in Something’s Gotta Give are movie sets built to Nancy Meyers’ specifications.
Your Own Unique Interpretation of Classic Coastal is Best
Do you even need to live near water to enjoy this look?

As a landlocked granny myself, I think not.

Some of us stay tropical and breezy far from the sea!

Classic may mean something different to you depending on your experiences and values. Go with that when you aim to keep it classic. We didn’t really discuss authenticity in this post, but it’s everything and never goes out of style.

If you happen to live near the sea like this designer (above and below: M+M Interior Design)?

Ooh la la…blessed!

(I still don’t know how to play chess!)
