You’ll love these glimpses if cozy English country style charms you. Not that there’s one interpretation. Lovely libraries packed with books and a multitude of prints and patterns? Vintage fabrics, worn arm chairs, embroidered pillows, and fussy trims? Or do you fancy more modern interpretations of country style with modern art and fresh flowers? We’ll gaze at various design elements including paint colors, texture and character that seem to reflect English country flavor.
Cozy English Country Style: Texture + Character
We are still charmed by all things English countryside these days! The rich history in and outside these homes only grows more endearing as I grow older!
Texture From Tongue & Groove and Bead Board
Would you believe that this beautiful moment hails from a home by the sea in Malibu?
So crisp and lovely! Need a paint color suggestion?
Cozy English Country Style & Cotswold Stone
Remember this fantasy Cotswold cottage where its antique dealer owners have layered it with lovely white?
Need an idea for a modernizing cool white to pair with a mix of vintage and modern details?
While I don’t know the color of the walls, this white reminds me of the interiors in our prior home painted BM OC-151.
See what I mean about maximalism being optional?
For a warmer white for walls, consider Farrow & Ball DIMITY:
I love how designer Zoe Feldman used in this kitchen:
Open Shelves
I’m calling this lightened up English country cottage look “modern” but “contemporary” may be a better description.
There’s plenty of Old World charm inside…
and out…
Oooooh, I love that door color. Reminds me of Sea Salt (Sherwin-Williams):
And I love when the line is spectacularly blurred between outside and inside!
The modern look of these stripped English antiques! And all of that gorgeous stone!
Is the look a bit too “lightened” for you?
Sometimes the spare look is for the sake of ease (the cottage above is offered as a rental and photography location).
While the finish of the cupboards above is custom and available through deVOL, it reminds me of:
And in other cases, it is very intentional (above: Helen Parker styling magic!).
Cozy English Country Magic at Heckfield Place (Hampshire)
Heckfield Place showed up on my radar in 2020 when we couldn’t travel and suddenly I felt desperate to visit this boutique hotel. The interiors and English countryside landscape (400+ acres) took my breath away at this charming 18th-century restored manor home in Hampshire, England. It received a redesign by Ben Thompson.
“Resolutely natural, elegantly evolving, we are a beautiful piece of English history that redefines the idea of a hotel. All just an hour from London.”
Interior Design by Ben Thompson
Ben Thompson (bwt) describes his aesthetic as one encompassing: understated elegance,
effortless design, and lightness of impact. His work is distinguished by context and mood, not just architecture and interior design. That is, it “subtly speaks of the people and places at the core of the projects.”
If you like the neutral color above that complements the linen sofa so well, peek at SW Agreeable Gray. I find it to be a great neutral to pair with Belgian linen and natural khaki tones.
Here it is in our family room where it is quite washed out by the abundant natural light coming from the south, east and west:
Some of the guest suites at Heckfield Place are spacious, while others are snug. Seeing this sliding barn door below gave me pause as I would never have thought to add one inside a traditional Georgian home!
Here’s a black paint favored by many designers:
There’s a quiet contemplative nature to these cozy designs, and it is calming to simply behold images of these rooms.
If your style happens to be “warm hug and warm mug of deliciousness,” this flavor of English country style is likely vibing for you. I feel inspired in fresh ways!
Isn’t that moody, organic green on the walls cozy? Here’s an idea to approximate it:
Similar to Card Room Green, Acacia Haze is worth sampling too:
Cozy Rustic Organic Materials
What an impact fresh flowers, live plants, and organic touches everywhere will make in a space!
I can imagine a long lunch in this sunny space!
