11 Simple Spruce Ups at Home to Tackle in Fall!
Home Spruce Up 1: Declutter & Organize Closets
I went into detail HERE about decluttering after reading this great book on the topic that approaches organization from a realistic perspective while also addressing emotional aspects .
One of the easiest places to begin to clear clutter for spring and summer (at least when you’re me) is to store away summer clothing and warm weather items such as outdoor pillows and patio furniture.
If you lack space in a closet for storage, consider under-bed containers which will keep items dust free.
These containers became a necessity for folks who have downsized!
As far as organizing small items in closets and on shelves, I found these good looking storage bins that resemble matte ceramic to upgrade my dollar store old ones:
They were just the right size for the new closet modules we installed (read about it HERE).
The ribbed design is something that sets them apart.
And the lids lie flat so you can stake these babies!
Home Spruce Up 2: Pillow Talk
Fresh new pillows for autumn! There’s just nothing like the fresh goodness of a luxurious pillow. Here’s my personal fave I raved about HERE.
Home Spruce Up 3: Sparkling Range
I didn’t say this list of spring spruce ups would be glamorous…ha! I’m good about cleaning the cooktop daily, but with all my pizza making, the oven can get crunchy.
Fall may be perfect for a self-cleaning oven since you can open a window. The process is not the most fragrant. Cleaning it by hand? Wear gloves and a mask. Play soothing music and think about a sweet little reward you’ll treat yourself to when that oven is sparkling clean following the labor.
Home Spruce Up 4: Fresh Frig
It’s my least favorite thing to do, and I can talk myself out of it and procrastinate like crazy. Yet every single time I clean the refrigerator, I am amazed that it didn’t take an entire day and was not nearly as exhausting as I always imagine it will be.
I can’t seem to tackle my frig cleaning without help from:
Sometimes it can be motivating to first watch someone demonstrate their own personal method for cleaning that big boy.
Home Spruce Up 5: New Towels
Old ones can become dingy, and fresh new towels can be one of those ‘everyday lovely’ layers of daily hygiene to elevate and create calm.
Moving has a way of showing you what household items are getting threadbare and need to be replaced. I have my eye on these for our bath at the new house.
My terry bathrobe also needs a replacement – my current one is turning 10 and looks it. Here’s the one in my cart that would perfectly match the towels above:
Home Spruce Up 6: Porch Pretty
Pick a mild and less windy day to sweep, clear debris with a leaf blower, and hose off your porch to set the stage for Fall. Here’s a pretty book I own that may inspire you decor-wise:
We have two of these these planters from Home Depot on the front porch flanking the front door, and anything paced inside looks fabulous. They can be left out year-round, which truly helps if your storage is limited.
Home Spruce Up 7: Shower Curtain Liner Replacement
It’s a little spruce up packing a huge punch, and changing out a new shower curtain liner each year only takes about 5 minutes!
I prefer the fabric liners since they can easily be tossed in the wash. However, if you prefer a traditional heavyweight liner:
Home Spruce Up 8: Change Filters
Wherever you have filters, make sure you have fresh ones. The furnace is an obvious place to start, but also check any ice maker, vacuum, and vent hood filters (mine get greasy quickly!)
Home Spruce Up 9: Paint Touch Up
This is a task I tend to dread it because I think it will take weeks whereas a big dent in the chore can be done in a single day.
Here is my favorite paint brush for any number of jobs:
Home Spruce Up 10: Tidy Those Garden Beds
One of the things I appreciate about our new house is that the lot is fully landscaped. I’m no master gardener, but I can clearly see the weeds that need to go and the dead foliage to clear away. (At our last property, it was such a foresty woodland, I could hardly tell!).
And just a reminder that gardening burns like 800 calories an hour. Something to think about if apple cakes and cider donuts are in your autumnal future…apple recipes HERE.
House Spruce Up 11 is Optional
Pssst. Even though I assured you there would be no windows mentioned in the spruce-ups, if you do decide to clean ’em:
