Sound Advice from Cool Cats
Toast of the Town
My apologies that this pet post is dog heavy…I’ll make it up to you crazy cat moms and dads soon!
Speaking of toast, have you made my healthy super easy flourless, kneadless bread yet? Oh, I do love my toast…
What’s with the cats and toast folly?
You may have heard of the Buttered cat paradox: cats always land on their feet while buttered toast always lands butter-side down.
If your sweet kittycat is too proud to recline on white bread, this may be more her jam (can you EVEN believe what I did there!!!!???):
Pets & Cosplay
Not that you would ever make your collie sacrifice his dignity for more than 30 seconds for a photo in this get-up, but…
Clearly some pets are more easy going than others about cosplay!
I can’t say I ever dressed the uber intelligent Bella Luna as a Jedi, but she looked adorable in a number of knit kittycat hats, handmade felted wool capes, and baby clothes purchased at flea markets in Paris. I know. Crazytown!

Inside Your Pet’s Brain
In this book, Gregory Berns reveals how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom.
How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence.

Remembering Bella Luna
Our girl left her furry little body in late 2015, and we remember her with fondness every single day because she brought so much unconditional love to our lives. We named her for a family favorite: the beautiful moon.
Bella was so zen, always wore a top knot, insisted on hydrating from the faucet (not my fault!), and could do more fancy tricks than I can say (including praying and waving hi). Her favorite activity of all throughout her 14 years was happily chasing a white balloon around our home. Hence, white balloons were in ample supply at our house, and they still lie in drawers everywhere. Those billowy whites added a festive layer to even the most mundane grey days.
What a beauty and a blessing you were, Bella Luna!
Our Pet’s Painting
Artist Cindy Austin, whose work you may be acquainted with, painted our Bella, and the masterpiece hangs on the wall in our home as a priceless treasure.
If you have ever seen images of the beautiful cow painting of ‘Eulalie’ in Miss Mustard Seed’s home, then you have seen this artist’s work! See more HERE.
Watercolor Portrait of Your Pet?
Years ago, I discovered a wonderful artist in Bojano, Italy (Irene of Dimdi) to paint Bella Luna. Then, one Christmas, I commissioned her to paint portraits of all of my siblings’ pets – and they absolutely treasure the gifts!

Hi Marilyn. The puppy’s name is still her given name EVIE – so not sure what the final choice will be! Thanks so much for checking up on us!
I LOVE ANIMALS. I CAN SEE DRESSING UP A PET, WHEN THE WEATHER IS COLD AND THE ANIMAL DOES NOT HAVE MUCH OF A COAT, OR IS A MUCH OLDER ANIMAL, WHEN TAKEN OUT FOR WALKS. I DO BELIEVE THAT WHEN WE TRY TO DRESS UP ANIMALS AND TRY TO MAKE THEM LOOK HUMAN AS US, IT IS A TORMENT AND CRUEL PUNISHMENT FOR THEM. THEY DO SILENTL REBEL, AND YOU CAN NOT BLAME THEM. WE SHOULD LET ANIMALS AND PETS BE THEMSELVES. THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE DRESSED UP FOR OUR ENTERTAINMENT. WE SHOULD RESPECT THEIR WORLD, AND AVOID TRYING TO MAKE THEM ADAPT TO OUR WORLD. COLLARS AND LEASHES ARE ENOUGH.
I have to say, I agree. I found myself saying, “Oh, poor creature” at each costume photo. If you look closely, you can see the discomfort in their eyes.

What a loving heart you have. I do hope the dog models did not have to be uncomfortable or wear any costume too long. I don’t know anyone who would torture a pet by making them wear something longer than a few minutes. Our Bella was a trooper about trying on little comfy things so like humans, there is a range of tolerance, but my apologies if this triggered you or makes you sad – I don’t ever want to do that.
Dear Michelle, I never meant to put in doubt your good intentions. Your site is beautiful and your words uplifting. I was just really struck by the look of the Collie and its bowed head. It was clearly uncomfortable. I once owned Collies and I love them so. They’re not meant for exploitation by advertising agencies and the hot lights of studios. They’re fine working dogs and herders and the best friend you’ll ever have.
I can not understand why some people mistreat a dog. They are wonderful creatures. They give us unconditional love, companionship and are our best friends.
Border Collies are my dog of choice. They are so smart, therefore easy to train. Both of our dogs are/were therapy dogs, who brought a little sunshine into the lives of seniors in retirement/nursing homes. I feel happy that they can brighten another’s day. They excel at Agility class but we don’t travel for competitions. It’s far too time consuming. We do it so they have the mental, as well as physical challenge, which is so important with a dog like a Border Collie. If not exercised, they can become quite neurotic. A Border Collie is not for everyone. If people are still working they do not do well left alone, unchallenged nor exercised. If a person is not active, they are not the right pet for that individual. But, for us they are perfect!
I hope your son’s puppy has returned to good health. He’s a handsome fellow.

What a wonderful way to be a bright light in your community! Our son’s dog has recovered – her name is EVIE for now (the name she was given before adoption), and we’re still not sure if she has chronic colitis or if the condition was acute. She is sooooo agile and loved the twigs in our yard so much! Thank you so much for asking and for adding beauty here. xox
Give my apologies to Evie. 😉

Hahaha. No worries. 🙂
Love this post. We lost our, Reese (Golden Retriever) , almost two years ago now. I think of her almost every day and all the company and love she gave us. We have Willow now who is another Golden Retriever and we love her so so much. Willow’s personality is quite different than our Reese’s was, but isn’t that what life is about. We now have a bit of a wild child versus our laid back nothing can bother me girl. Although, I have to say Willow has made 2020 bearable with her antics.
Happy Holidays

What a gift these sweet furry friends are to our lives – surely pets are the best prescription for just about everything. Your Goldens past and present sound so lovely, and I get to enjoy a friend’s Golden puppy who is a delight! Merry Christmas and peace to you and yours, friend.
