A bespoke kitchen from deVOL came together for less than £25K? I had to know more. Yet seeing images of the space only baffled me more. Today, we’ll revisit an amazing English country kitchen addition at a beautiful artisan’s cottage in Bath, England. We’ll also peek at more deVOL kitchens to inspire ideas for our own projects. How to Design a Stunning English Country Kitchen on a Budget?

If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you’ll know I’ll never be insane enough to reduce any kitchen design to a dozen easy steps. Gurl, pleez. Instead, visual imagery and guiding principles gleaned from successful designs will spark your creativity and provide a springboard for planning.

So how was this dreamy award-winning custom kitchen achieved with budget in mind?

Budget Savers for a Bespoke English Kitchen

1. It appears these homeowners opted for base cabinets only…doing so significantly reduced the cabinetry budget.

2. When the square footage for the space remains relatively small, the budget can too.

3. Open shelving is extremely friendly-priced when compared to cupboards…an added bonus is how they contribute a more bespoke and unfussy country look.

4. Concrete countertops typically cost less than granite or stone and can impart a rustic industrial-influenced edgy quality.

5. English country kitchens (and traditional kitchens from past eras) are often unfitted–a quality uncommon to contemporary American kitchen designs which frequently entail uninterrupted lines of wall to wall cabinetry. Antique or vintage cupboards, hutches, or armoires may be repurposed to both cut down on costs and also achieve an authentically charming unfitted look.

6. Notice the simplicity of the pot rack above the range? Something similar can be created with ordinary, inexpensive plumbing pipe hardware available at big box stores.

7. Since each piece of deVOL’s custom cabinetry, hardware, sinks, and lighting may be purchased individually, even small kitchen design budgets can be accommodated.

8. The innovative owners of this home were very clever about upcycling materials. If you’re willing to invest time, energy and thought into re-using, recycling, and re-purposing, the savings can be significant.
