Fashion Over 50: What to Wear to Graduation
In my own family, it’s an exciting time since I have a son graduating from law school and a nephew getting married–so many fun parties in the works!
While my daily uniform tends to be rather boring in spring (long sleeve white t-shirts, neutrals, artsy tunics over distressed denim, shift dresses with pockets), I sometimes turn to bolder colors for parties and occasions. This cerise color looks so great with fair complexions, yes?
But I also love romantic, flowy florals, and I never thought I would see such a 1990’s resurgence of them in the marketplace! My college-aged niece loves the dresses we were wearing in 1992!
Here’s something that feels very French and festive, and you’ll note I’m leaning toward comfy, casual dresses since the commencement events and parties in my neck of the woods are not fancy affairs.
I have a small collection of 1970’s vintage cuff bracelets sort of like this one below, and they bring back such fond memories!
I could live in a dress like the blue one below…such an awesome hue!
And a scarf like this makes sense for air conditioned venues and windy evenings.
Another dress that has a lovely South of France vibe going…I think I may have to throw this one in the cart:
I was feeling Frenchie style the other day when I shared these bistro chairs HERE.
Do I really need ANOTHER white cotton prairie style dress to wear anywhere and anytime? Wait a sec. I am supposed to be collecting ideas for graduation…darn it.
…it’s just that I’m finding other cute things that could wind up being everyday essentials!
Speaking of everyday essentials, I have been wearing studs from Madewell for years now, and even though they typically don’t offer a wide assortment of options, I seem to like every single design they come up with.
These sandals are sooooooo cute, and I imagine their neutrality will work with every dress here.
I’m seeing shirt dresses with lovely waist ties everywhere, and with the pockets…SCORE.
A cape scarf! I love these pretty beachy pieces that look so awesome over a plain white tee and light blue faded denim anything.
Here’s another beachy accessory for everyday OR an occasion.
Are you more of a pant suit or jumpsuit type?
I love a wide leg linen pant, and while a cropped style is not flattering on me, I’d like to try a paper bag style like these:
Linen pants with espadrilles has my imagination drifting to summer!
The feminity and loveliness of these penny ankle strap numbers got me thinking about wearing navy for graduation.
But when I see this antique coral and the candy button colors of the beaded hoop earrings, my heart swoons.
Here’s a pale dress I like, but I would definitely need a serious spray tan to not look washed out in it.
Do you like a clutch much?
I’m a crossbody girl.
But who can resist a tote?
I have to share this every day intimate item with you because they are an inexpensive find I discovered on vacation. Not only are they comfy – they totally remind me of those track shorts we wore as kids!

Thanks for the ideas Michele! I’m eyeing the leopard espadrilles. Also do you have a source for your artsy tunics to wear over distressed jeans?

Thanks for tuning in – I bet there are plenty of styles that would be flattering on you and not the pipsqueak I am. 🙂
I love the shirt dresses always a classic and I tend to buy preppy styles so ginghams and stripes are my thing but you area butterfly so you need Foley, flowery, ethereal. I heard Amazon has some little. Pretties at good price points.
