My Own History With Blue
Our very first Chicagoland bungalow came with a teeny kitchen we gutted and renovated ourselves. The color story was navy (like the kitchen above) and white, and the style was traditional. When we bought a vacation home in Arizona in 2016, I couldn’t wait to make over the red kitchen we inherited. It bloomed into a serene, blue-grey, Nordic French style one. I hand-painted the cabinets blue-grey, and the kitchen turned out to be my favorite part of the transformation since the mood instantly quieted. Pale blue remains my favorite color after white.

Hands down number 14! I love the cobbled together look in this kitchen that looks like it is actually used for cooking. The other kitchens are beautiful, but seem “too perfect” and not much personality. BUT…this is just my opinion.
On a side note, I would LOVE to see pics of your first home using blue and white.

Wouldn’t it be fun to see most of these kitchens as they look on a daily basis unstyled? That kitchen in the 1920s bungalow would look so dated now, but we completely gutted it and did everything ourselves. We preserved the original wood floors, added cabinetry, added a dishwasher, and tried to keep it Scandinavian/classic with navy and white. It felt very Swedish, and the bathroom just around the corner was full-on Swedish with sunny yellow walls and red and blue accents. 🙂
I love some blue Mexican tile either on the floor or for a backsplash. No. 1 is my fav!

We are currently trying to decide whether or not to paint our cabinets or to rip out and start fresh. My original thought was all white but since we’ve waited so long it no longer seems the most current style. We’ve contemplated doing a dark color on the bottom but more recently I’ve fallen in love with the very light blue. I think painting cabinets with a color is one thing, but I cannot see myself spending thousands on cabinets that could just be a trend right now. How do people have the nerve to go “all in”? Our designer calls me chicken.

Hahaha. Well I hear you about feeling conflicted about whether to just paint or replace. If you decide to buy new cabinets, as long as you choose a timeless style with a neutral color or stain, you’ll probably set yourself up for success in terms of resale. And if you stay, you’ll get to enjoy those new cabinets! Kitchens still sell houses, and don’t rule out white cabinets since lots of buyers love white kitchens. If you decide to paint, take baby steps. Get a piece of wood that is a similar size to a cabinet door and try out the color. Set it on the counter and notice how the color changes throughout the day. Live with it and see how it makes you feel. I will be painting our sons’ kitchen cabinets and just today painted one door front in a medium gray (like pewter). From here, he’ll decide if he wants to go with a darker charcoal, something with less blue undertone, etc. No need to simply sign off on a color and white knuckle it when you can be a little more methodical.

I’ve been looking and thinking and comparing and going back and forth between a blue or a grey for my kitchen cabinets for some time. I’ve really fallen in love with the color in number 4 and number 12 but I’m unclear as to exactly what colors they are. Could you share please? Hi there! Thanks so much for reading – I think if you like no. 4, you should check out Benjamin Moore Van Deusen Blue (just used it for a client’s bathroom walls, and she loves it). As far as no. 12, check out Sherwin Williams DISTANCE. You really don’t even need to decide between blue or grey since so many of the best sophisticated colors can be pinned down to one or the other! I almost always find the right blue in the grey section of the paint colors. If you want to go dramatic, stay tuned for a very deep blue/black color I just used on our son’s kitchen cabinets!
