Evocative: French Inspired Decor Stirs the Senses
The French seem to deeply understand pleasing all of the senses and evoking emotion with art, color, and objects with a room’s design.

Indeed, there is so much to learn about creating a mood to encourage well-being.

Can we train our eye to strike that balance between character, elegance, and rusticity?

Luminous: Luminosity & Country French Whites
My favored palette within the realm of French inspired interiors includes those faded, lightened up, chalky, subdued, faded pale colors that reflect and increase ambient light within a room.

If the word ‘sun-drenched’ feels delicious to your senses, you’re in the club too.

Earthy: Natural Elements & Warmth
Natural materials are essential to European country design. Flowers are fresh. Rugs and textiles are woven of materials which grew from the earth. Pottery, earthenware, objects, and furnishings are made of wood, stone, and iron.

A down to earth sensibility permates my favorite French inspired decorating. Most homes aren’t excessively spacious so objects must be useful AND beautiful. It’s their usefulness which adds to the beauty.

Subtle: Understated Approaches Make a Big Splash
Whether we’re exploring palette or lighting, the French have mastered the art of the understated. The art of juxtaposition. Perhaps this is because the French best understand the power of subtlety amid contrast.

It’s worth noticing what isn’t there as much as what is. There is much to learn about evoking a soothing mood by layering but also by subtracting.

Soulful: Engaging the Spirit With Design
It’s an ageless element of simplicity, purity, and graceful elegance. Often soulfulness results from incorporating antiques. Soulfulness may flow from multiple sources: the spirit of the decorator, the history and integrity of objects, the architecture or bones of the shelter, and even from color choices.

What I’m identifying as soulful may be called poetry or romance elsewhere. For an effortless soul-full look, avoid overthinking. Decorating with a light hand and full heart is a winning combo.

Injecting soul into a newer build is always a challenge. You’re essentially aiming to create an energy and story in a place where memories will form.

That’s why it can be so wise to consult a professional with experience who has experienced the full range of interiors and succeeded many times at overcoming obstacles.

Daily Living & Timeless Pale Interiors
In terms of my affinity for country French white decor, there are parallels in my daily life. For example, I tend to more often welcome quiet, wabi sabi beauty into the ordinary rhythms of my day more than loud energetic choices.

Soothing interior quietude is helpful when so many of my days involve struggle with chronic illness and autoimmune ups and downs.

For me, resonance with French-inspired subtle, soulful living reflects a desire to greet the beauty life brings with a quietly wholehearted, HELLO, LOVELY.

Sometimes interior harmony (figurative and literal) flows naturally. For me, intentional daily practice is important. Meditative moments, opportunities for contemplation, and gestures to release thoughts into the quiet space of my heart…these are choices worth choosing.

Where else but the soul can one rest within an everlasting source of goodness and purity? Where else will one find a well that will not run dry?

You may want to tour these interiors for more subtle unfussy inspiration as well.

I have always wanted to use encaustic tiles in one of our projects, but I have been shy as a DIYer since they are a heavier material. Any experience with them? They seem perfect for mud rooms and laundry rooms.
