French and Belgian Paint Colors: Greys, Blues & Greens is inspired by the dreamily timeless and tranquil interiors of a favorite European and Country French inspired cottage. For me, there is something utterly engaging yet calming about quiet, natural, coastal colors reminiscent of driftwood, the sea, and hazy heavenly skies.

While these colors are inspired by nature, they also have their own mystique.

Weaving such sophisticated colors through the design tapestry of a European influenced home for a lovely family?

Surely a peaceful backdrop for love.

The sophisticated colors mixed here are chalkier and less precious than pastels.

Another layer of unexpected loveliness within this stone cottage?

The fact it resides nowhere near the South of France–suggesting we may perhaps capture a measure of its watercolored essence as well!

Serene European Inspired Color Palette
Green is definitely still having a moment, and I admire this whispery celery tone of the lantern.

The stained trim is so unique!

The bed, dining room chairs, and other furnishings are from Alice Lane.

Soft Greens and Blues Are the Colors I Choose
There’s a special place in my heart for French greys, French blues, and French greens.

I especially love those quieter, faded, subdued, and complex colors you can’t easily describe.

Is it more grey than blue? Somewhere between a hazy sky and a kitten’s coat?
So cashmere-like, you are compelled to take a nap inside it?
Yum.

For me, those are the colors of dreams.

Our Muse to Set the Tone
Who can sing a cowboy lullaby summoning greens and blues better than James?
Inspiring Gustavian French Cottage
Desiree of Beljar Home and Decor de Provence designed the interiors and with her husband and father dreamed this Gustavian French cottage into reality.
The kitchen’s subway tiles are Aqua from Ann Sacks.
The interiors are luxe yet humbly layered with collected antiques, rustic elegance, and coastal Frenchy greys, blues, and greens this sea-loving homeowner admires.
Surely it is also a lesson in muted majesty.

French & Belgian Paint Colors: Greys
While Desiree shared on her long-running inspiration site Decor de Provence that she favors colors from Flamant, I’m also including options beyond that line.

Make sure to try sample pots first since your unique lighting, geographic location, and keen eye will determine if the color works in your space.

Here are a couple of lovely and also atmospheric blue-grey paint colors I have used.
This next grey paint color may not strike you as having blue undertones, but in a room with lots of sunlight, it truly reads blue-grey.

Beyond White Paint for Trim
The trim in Desiree’s Gustavian French home is stained a custom a blue-grey-green…so unusual in American homes and lends such Swedish charm!
Trim was also stained this color in her prior French home (so interesting with those creamy walls).
It can take years to hunt down the perfect vintage piece for your French country home – the cupboard above, for example. However, sometimes you can score a replica – see this post with a chippy vintage style glass front pretty blue cabinet.
Resources for Decor & Furniture
As for sources for the beautiful furnishings and decor in her home, the homeowner is also a shop owner at Beljar Home.

The majority of the pieces in this home are collected, antique, and vintage (a favorite source is Brambles and Blossoms in Provo, UT).
Desiree says reclaimed light fixtures are one of her must-haves so you will have to hunt down these European fixtures! But maybe you’ll be able to score them at her new venture with Bell Jar Home!

They are amazing for sure, and the designer/homeowner probably snagged it in France – you may find something here: https://rstyle.me/+MFgN9gM1-75E5YSjkjIXNg. I think all of us are itching to get to the vintage and antique markets! 🙂
I never tire of seeing posts with these gorgeous French colors, so softly and beautifully displayed! They are the colors of my soul.
When we were renovating our current home last fall, I saved many photos of this home. They were my dream, my inspiration. But the time line (getting renovated and done before snow fall!) had me painting everything one color white…trim, doors, walls, ceilings. Some day I may have the time to mix and paint a custom color like the stunning gray/green/blue trim in this home. Ahhhh…perfection!
This post is such a soothing and uplifting one to my day! (Can it be both? Yes it can! 🙂 )
Your posts are always filled with the best eye-candy! 🙂

I just realized I’m a sucker for painted doors in pictures and blog posts, but I barely notice them in my everyday life and work. Maybe I’m not quite the connoisseur I think of myself?
That opening picture is striking!

So happy to be of any help! I have been seeing so much of a 1980s revival when it comes to trends, and I just get tickled. I never get bored with a timeless, subdued, natural color palette!
What were exactly the colors of the trims through the house? They are lovely!

You bet!
This home is vintage, muted perfection! Next to Patina Farm, it was my #1 inspiration when we were building… thanks to YOU sharing it with us! Like Desiree, I painted all my interior doors a neutral color in contrast to my white walls… and now I kinda wish I had also painted the doorframes! Maybe down the road I can add that. I also copied her idea of vintage light fixtures throughout…though mine are not authentic vintage the patina & chippiness add such charm. I get the most compliments on them thanks to Desiree. I also copied her by finding a similar vintage green cupboard & placed in the kitchen as well as finding @ the same time a small vintage desk & put it in same exact place as hers in kitchen beside the frig where it fit perfectly! Lastly I added same-looking wicker chairs around our table with a bench on one side. All I need to add are some seat cushions like hers to make them more comfortable! All this to say…I glean such inspiration from all the great “stuff” you share here, Michele, & it’s not hard to copy the unique look of a beautiful home like this one at a very reasonable cost!

I love it!!! I have learned so much from Desiree – her eye is impeccable, and sense of color divine. I love the same homes you love so I know I would feel right at home at your house. I am almost ready to begin painting doors here, and while I truly want to do a color other than white, my husband feels strongly about white. The only other color I might be able to talk him into is black. However, I haven’t lived with black doors so I’m not sure. Also the fact that the lighting is dim in the bedrooms. I’m thinking white doors might help the light situation (right now everything is stained dark cherry). Also, you’re speaking my language when it comes to frugal shopping! Can’t wait to begin garage sale-ing soon!
