Here I am still on the fence about painting our bedroom a year later! It’s Agreeable Gray, a neutral yet moody color that can vibe sad in winter when it’s gloomy. If you’re undecided about something design-wise, it can help to revisit inspiration and designs you love. That’s why romantic bedroom decor and pretty paint colors are here to please.
Romantic Bedroom Decor & Paint Color Ideas
Our Bedroom Continues to Evolve
It was a long time coming when we finally got around to adding romantic touches to our bedroom at the Georgian. Before we could consider any cosmetic improvements, there were pressing matters of function to address. Framing, drywall, a much needed closet remodel, and a complete overhaul and reimagining of the bath! Here’s how it started when the wall was framed between sitting room and bedroom:
Soooooo many windows making heating/cooling a problem. I knew an exterior door separating the sitting room would go a long way in keeping those drafts at bay.
My husband needed more time to see my genius since building walls is not his idea of romance. I have to be a master motivator, doncha know, and when I mentioned this was a place he could incorporate an old exterior door he bought years ago, bingo.
So much more romantic even at this stage! The ensuite is fussy with all of these angles and geometry so it was tricky for him to visualize how closing something off could dial down the busyness. The sitting room is a turret and a lovely little peaceful place overlooking a preserve, but it’s not worth it to freeze in winter just to view that room from bed.
Painting trim and doors white softened the look and shook it out of the ’90s back to the ’20s.
So relieved there are no photos or video footage of that era where I painted 6 coats of primer and enamel on the 11 windows in our suite. Goodness gracious, it was not the most romantic of times!
What a blessing my partner enjoys carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and challenges of all sorts. He did a beautiful job installing new closet modules and accessories that completely transformed our organizational systems in there.
You know it’s a great product and install when it’s a snap to keep tidy, and it never stops looking lovely!
We still love the transformation, and it’s always a pleasure to open the closet door.

Romantic Bedroom Details to Admire
You may be surprised by the eclectic mix that follows.
While timeless and tranquil bedrooms tend to include antiques, tranquil colors, and gentle lighting, there are a myriad of ways to interpret “romantic retreat.” For example, the use of restraint by Rose Uniacke is key to this serene bedroom. Let’s face it, we don’t all need our bedrooms to feel energized or be a space to mass collections.
But you do you. Plenty of interior designers consider the color story for a bedroom to be exceedingly important. Certain colors agree with a client’s complexion, and who doesn’t want to look optimally attractive within these walls? Rich color theory and psychology to explore!
Minimal, Lightened Up California Luxe
Is it my favorite look? Probably! I’ll never tire of seeing how the Giannettis interpret romance and European inspired barefoot elegance.
Another iteration of their former Patina Farm bedroom…
When the aim is a timelessly romantic interior, history, vintage and antiques are likely in order. Which antiques? This blog makes a case for French and Gustavian pieces!

Three Designers, One Bedroom
British Charm & Countryside Romance
It was love at first sight when I saw these guestrooms at Heckfield Place.
The walls in the bedroom above remind me of ours: muddy and masculine. How does the mood change when the color is softer?
Or when the undertones of the paint contain less brown and more green:
You can sense a more organic feel of this sage color above. It may be Lichen:
Wouldn’t this be a stunning choice in an urban setting that lacks trees or a natural view? My own bedroom’s setting is an expanse of lawn and forest…do green-gray walls pair well with such a setting? How would the tension of a cooler color change the mood?
Cool Blues for a Bedroom
Blue can be uplifting or calm or even atmospheric. If you have worked with blue paint colors, you probably know the pitfalls. The best blues tend to be cool grays:
How do you feel about repeated patterns in a bedroom? Do you tire easily of pattern?
It does appear that bedrooms can feel romantic while still rather busy. Nature-themed wallcoverings evoke different emotions for different people. If a floral pattern reminds you of your grandmother’s house and stirs up nostalgia, is it a good choice for a couple’s bedroom?
With a plethora of tranquil wallpaper options, take your time with the process of browsing and choosing. And please please please sample, sample, sample! Live with those samples on the wall first.
Soft Palettes & Peaceful Interiors
New decorators are always surprised that it’s not enough to simply know you want a white or neutral paint for a bedroom.
It’s a good idea to take your sweet time choosing the RIGHT white from the rainbow of them.
Depending on the natural light a bedroom receives, cool or warm undertones in the white color can make all the difference.
A restrained color palette may be easy to live with over time. And don’t forget you should take into consideration your geographical location and whether you have seasons as you narrow down the options. The white I use here on the prairie in Illinois may be all wrong for a bedroom in the Southwest.
I’m crazy ’bout this brand…
Here I am still wondering if I should lighten up the color in our bedroom since it can read gloomy in winter.
Another aspect of choosing a paint color worth mentioning: pay no mind to the false notion that somehow a restrained look or pale color story is a boring look.
Are you decorating someone else’s bedroom or your own? For your own, please yourself. And PLEASE KNOW THYSELF. There’s no design law that says you must take risks when decorating your bedroom for heaven’s sake. Have a Pinterest board of bedroom ideas? Notice what colors or mood or style you keep saving.
Modern While Earthy & Restful
If your ceiling is low, there’s an opportunity to bring everything lower in the bedroom:
And doesn’t an earthy direction make sense for such low living?
Another inspiring idea from Patina Meadow? A treasured tapestry can become a headboard and tranquil focal point.
Isn’t it a treat to see the choices Brooke Giannetti has been making in Tennessee and how her spaces feel so different in this setting?
Love a zen den with country flavor?
I love me some unfussy so that look strikes me as romantic. You may like your romance more over the top and chic!
Chic Sanctuary & a Little Romance
If a Stockholm apartment is the fantasy, HAVE THY FANTASY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE!
I encourage you to diverge from the style of the rest of your home if the spirit moves you to create something set apart. For example, maybe you have always been drawn to Hollywood Regency style…
As for me, fantasy would entail anything designer Jill Egan would choose for her own home…
She can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned. Truly poetic and refined.
Desiree (Beljar Home) also inspires me through and through. It’s never about showing off or taking a contrived approach. She is ever seeking raw authenticity, storied pieces, and pared down simplicity.
Does an airy light mood make sense for what you constitute as tranquil, timeless, and romantic?
These are questions to ponder as you peruse these examples of beautiful bedrooms.
Casual, Livable Calm Bedrooms
I hope these ideas for romantic bedroom decor inspired fresh ideas and fresh questions. After all, design is utterly personal. The options are exciting and endless.
As I mentioned earlier, please do get in touch with yourself more deeply before investing in the work of a new scheme. All things will improve with added self-awareness. The best designers will ask the right questions and help you uncover even more!
I keep encouraging you to do the work of self-exploration because it will prosper you to move through life with a more clarified sense of: what you desire, what constitutes satisfaction, and how you would like life to feel (rather than look).
Always here willing to listen if you have questions. (After subscribing, simply hit reply to any post in your email to chat or ask questions.)
