Heckfield Place arrived on my radar nearly one year ago, soon after we toured what would become our new home (a Georgian on three acres in the country). A quick online search revealed its inspiring interior design and English countryside landscape (400+ acres!). The charming 18th-century restored manor home in Hampshire, England received a redesign by Ben Thompson a couple of years ago. What Makes This Luxurious Countryside Hotel Heckfield Place So Cozy? As you’ll see, its guest rooms and dining spaces are traditional, timeless, and bespoke yet oh so cozy! Let’s explore the elements in the mix.
English Country Cozy Inside Heckfield Place in Hampshire
An 18th-century country house, Heckfield Place was renovated to create 44 guest suites, two restaurants (Marle and Hearth), spa facilities and an underground cinema.
At the heart of a 430-acre estate, it boasts a farm producing natural produce and flowers for guests.
It’s easy to see why this getaway would appeal to royals!
At the same time, the hotel is by no means trying to be a palace. Here’s how the hotel self-identifies:
“Resolutely natural, elegantly evolving, we are a beautiful piece of English history that redefines the idea of a hotel. All just an hour from London.”
Interior Design by Ben Thompson
Ben Thompson (bwt) describes his aesthetic as one encompassing:
understated elegance,
effortless design,
and lightness of impact.
His work is distinguished by context and mood, not just architecture and interior design.
That is, it “subtly speaks of the people and places at the core of the projects.”
Certainly the soothing, serene, nature-derived color story plays a strong role in the resultant COZY factor at Heckfield.
Moody Natural Paint Colors: Hanford+Green
While these paint and trim colors are likely custom, we do know the paint hails from Hanford+Green.
Don’t you love those muddy paint colors difficult to pin down like the one above? Is it gray-green? Mink?
What a gorgeously cozy country house bath! Would you ever suspect this is a hotel interior? When can I check in!?!
Luxurious Hotel With a Country House Feel
The natural textures in guest rooms also play starring roles in this manor house’s story.
Rush, seagrass, jute, and woven everything feels so appropriate and contributes to the relaxing country atmosphere.
Looking for ideas to inject cozy charm into your own spaces at home? Look no further than the Shaker peg rails and hooks you’ll see at the hotel.
Wouldn’t a hot water bottle cover and totes to borrow be thoughtful additions to any guest bedroom?
Bespoke & Timeless Design Inside Heckfield Place
Some of the guest suites at Heckfield Place are spacious, while others are snug. Seeing this sliding barn door below gave me pause as I would never have thought to add one inside a traditional Georgian home!
Yet the paint color unifies all of the architectural elements in the space! Maybe I will do something similar at home (btw, clearly I can add modern elements since it isn’t as if our 30 year old home is historic like this hotel!).
I adore the light touch the interior design makes in a cozy space like this dining area:
Dramatic, warm, and inviting yet without pretense or overbaked decorating.
Modern Mixed With Traditional English Country Style
The art collection throughout Heckfield Place is beyond impressive. I want this David Spiller piece with the 1963 pop song lyric in our home!
And there are all sorts of sexy moments throughout the hotel. I might call this moment below “daylight sexy.”
I mean. Cozy spaces can be truly sexy (I’m lookin’ at YOU, marble wrapped counters and shelves).
Cozy Rustic Organic Materials
What an impact fresh flowers, live plants, and organic touches everywhere will make in a space!
I can imagine a long lunch in this sunny space!
Juxtaposition of Marble & Wood for Cozy Character
It’s such an elegant, understated, sophisticated mix here. Rugged brick plays off of smooth warm wood and cool marble. Each texture elevates the other, and the contrasting tension is so sensually pleasing.
Isn’t the gold leafed lamp shade beautiful too?
I am reminded of the beauty of natural, aged pots and their power to add a layer of imperfect wild beauty to the mix.
Quiet Sophistication in a Hampshire, England Hotel Gem
There’s a quiet contemplative nature to these cozy designs, and it is calming to simply behold images of these rooms.
Imagine the serenity in person!?!
If your style happens to be “warm hug and warm mug of deliciousness,” this flavor of English country style is likely vibing for you.
I feel inspired in fresh ways!
