It wasn’t that long ago I was sampling blue and blue-grey paint colors for our kitchen here at the Georgian. Even when you think you are ready to commit to blue, there is the challenge of landing on the right one for your taste. If you too are seeking the perfect blue, make sure to check out the GREY SWATCHES. There’s a fair chance it’s a grey you need to get the suggestion of blue (it will interact with natural light). And why pay attention to more than a dozen paint color names? Undertones, child. Lighting too. They will affect your perception of the colors. And you should trust your resident fairie on the prairie paint godmother goddess who says to sample at least three. These ideas for Blue Kitchens (along with gray!) will help.

Benjamin Moore Van Courtland Blue HC-145
“An elegant Old World blue that also works well in more contemporary spaces,” Van Courtland Blue feels sophisticated and is similar to Province Blue.
With a light reflectance value of 31.47, it is in that medium range. It plays nicely with these Benjamin Moore colors: Wedgewood Gray, Simply White, Milky Way, and Coronado Cream.
Isn’t this an elegant blue paired with black?
BM Kensington Blue 840
Isn’t this a stunning navy? If you admire the blue kitchen below, you may very well may like this hue. Benjamin Moore calls it “A classic navy blue that brings a sense of refinement to any space.”
With its LRV of 11.97, it is a dark navy blue similar to Van Deusen Blue and Newburyport Blue.
Try this blue with Horizon, Mount Saint Anne, and Battenburg.
BEHR December Eve for Blue Kitchen Cabinets
I discovered another dark navy when I was trying to find a dark blue that resembled a custom color from a deVOL kitchen. This one’s from Behr and is very similar.
Here’s a custom blue that reminds me of December Eve:
St. Giles Blue Farrow & Ball No. 280
What if you’re after a bold and vivid blue that lifts your spirits every time you walk into the kitchen?
Such a gorgeous vivid turquoise Farrow & Ball says is “inspired by a colour originally found in the hall at 17th century St Giles House in Wimborne St Giles, Dorset. Its striking blue hue cannot fail to make you smile and will hold its own even in the darkest of places, so is often used as an accent in the back of bookshelves.”
Here’s a kitchen with vibrant blue whimsy that reminds me of this tone!
Can you imagine committing to a bold wallpaper AND a bold blue?
Benjamin Moore Smoke
If you love a gorgeous gray-blue with the potential to feel tranquil and breezy, this easy going blue hue may fit the bill.
BM characterizes this versatile medium gray as “softened with attractive blue-green undertones.” You can definitely see the green on the cabinetry in this laundry area above.
I perceive it as a gorgeous sky blue – not cloying. The LRV of 56.39 means it is going to reflect a lot of light back into the room (56.39%). If you were going for a slightly brighter sky shade, here’s a contender:
While I don’t know the precise blue in this kitchen below, it reminds me of Behr Sky Light.

If you love sky blue yet find it too vivid, keep in mind you can always ask for a sample mixed at a reduced saturation (like 50%) for a more subdued version of the color. Here’s another example of a sky blue kitchen where we don’t know the exact color.
F&B Hague Blue 30
This is a popular deep teal color among designers, and it’s easy to see why.
Rich and luxurious, this color is amazing on built-ins in a home office too.
In this case, we know the cabinetry above and below is indeed Hague Blue!
For a similar color from a different paint company:
It’s one of those mid-range blues that could be amazing with brass or gold-toned hardware.
Farrow & Ball Railings
If you’d love a handsome deep dark blue that is nearly black…
Farrow & Ball says Railings is “More blue than black, Railings is a softer alternative to black which is particularly suited to the ironwork it takes its name from. When used in Full Gloss on front doors it creates a handsome and commanding entrance. The bluer undertones of this dark hue transform rooms into dramatic and enveloping interior spaces.”

If your dream kitchen cabinets are dark and moody, here’s a similar color which may be worth a closer look.
Sherwin-Williams Dark Night (tap swatch below) feels earthy and dramatic.
You can see the green undertones in Dark Night when you compare it to this midnight blue called SW Anchors Aweigh:
Farrow & Ball Down Pipe
Here’s a moody dark grey with some blue undertones to consider. It could actually present as a slate blue depending on your lighting and context.

Ohhhhhh, this blue feels so elegant and English country, yes?
Even though Farrow & Ball calls it quietly elegant, I find it elegant period in this kitchen by Whittney Parkinson (Ladisic Fine Builders) in House Beautiful.
F&B sayd De Nimes 299 “feels wonderfully down to earth, so could be used on anything from a kitchen island to an airy drawing room. The exact shade is rooted in a regency palette but is inspired by the cloth of everyday workwear made in the French city Nîmes. Like denim, its blue hue is ultimately fashionable and yet always feels grounded.”

It is Farrow & Ball Hopper Head No. 305. Hopper Head is a classic charcoal that falls between Railings and Down Pipe (see those colors above).
“Inspired by the attractively designed iron containers used to catch rainwater at the top of a downpipe,” Farrow & Ball say Hopper Head is “Ideal for creating inviting spaces…and can be used exclusively across walls, woodwork and the ceiling for a dramatic space.”
Farrow & Ball Parma Gray No. 27
What if you’re dreaming of a cool coastal blue that will make you feel happy no matter the weather outside? Believe it or not, that paint color may be so happy that it does not sound blue at all…
“Reading as a cool blue, Parma Gray is another colour attributed to the great colourist John Fowler. Used as the backdrop to numerous costume dramas, it creates the perfect period feel when contrasted with Wimborne White. While Light Blue is described as silvery and can look that way in a lot of photography we see online, it reads more like a green in my own home.
