This gorgeous kitchen still captures my imagination even if the designer was guided with thouughts of a coastal/modern farmhouse hybrid plan. We’re revisiting images of this pretty Shaker style beauty in Palmetto Bluff by Lisa Furey to inspire our own ideas. This is one of those projects that instantly transports me to a slower summer state of mind, and even though school supplies are in the aisles everywhere, I’m still summering! Are Modern Farmhouse Kitchens Over?
First of all, we’ll cut to the chase immediately, kittens.
Most interior designers and media outlets will tell you the modern farmhouse kitchen trend waned in 2023.
But isn’t it still just a matter of semantics and marketing to keep us busy remodeling?
Just because what we termed modern country or modern vintage in the 80s and 90s bloomed into “modern farmhouse” circa 2015 doesn’t mean such kitchens are over.
Remember when Chip and Joanna were hitting their stride and shiplapping Texas walls like nobody’s business?
Shiplap has been around forever. Here’s an example of how it was embraced in this cottage’s entry:
Just because shiplap goes viral from a hit TV show doesn’t mean its relevance can’t endure. So don’t be afraid of using it if you love it.
There are elements of modern farmhouse style which have lasting value despite their trend value.
For example, floating shelves and open shelving of various configurations soared in popularity for kitchen designs in the last decade.
If this airy organization and decor feature works for your lifestyle and aesthetic, you need not write it off.
Same goes for these woven chairs – they are suggestive of coastal style while also being modern and even a bit retro.
Psst. See the property here.
Is it Coastal Grandmother? Modern Farmhouse? Vintage Modern?
Maybe it’s just that I’m immersed in the design biz daily, but I’m bored and annoyed with the changing trends and hip hashies which are designed to keep us clicking away.
That said, coastal granny everything was welcome on my radar!
Neutral coastal grandmother, anyone?
Timeless Design Elements Shared With Modern Farmhouse Kitchens
Lighting Ideas for Modern Farmhouse or Coastal Interiors
One of the design features in this particular kitchen that I may have left out of the design?
The black library type armed sconces on the sink wall. When mixing modern and vintage, these sort of selections can really create tension in a good way.
It is indeed a subjective matter, and I wasn’t crazy about how modern they felt to me.
Here are other lighting choices like those the designer chose for the property:
White Oak Flooring
White oak hardwoods became a popular choice when folks were creating modern farmhouse kitchens, and they aren’t ever going to fall from favor!
Exact wide plank white oak flooring: May River Flooring.
Here’s an option that isn’t the exact flooring but is in the same spirit as an engineered flooring.
Is it beginning to make sense that you can borrow design elements from a style that everyone says is out SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY MAKE SENSE ACROSS TIME?
Paint Color Ideas
Modern farmhouse kitchens are often black and white with natural wood accents.
White kitchen cabinets remain a classic choice. But which white? And what color white for shiplap? For smart ideas for choosing a cool bright white paint color for your walls, see this for white paint color help.
The designer made it easy on the painters! One color wraps the entire exterior AND interior:
Kitchen Island Paint Color? BENJAMIN MOORE Pashmina AF-100. And don’t read too much into the photos since post-editing and various lighting conditions affect how it is perceived.
Do modern farmhouse kitchens often feature two-tone cabinetry? We tend to see lots of natural wood or black painted islands paired with white cabinetry, but remember it’s only paint! If you hate it later, it can be changed.
Modern Farmhouse Kitchens: Countertops & Backsplash
In this particular modern farmhouse kitchen, the counters are Michelangelo marble from Garpa. (The range is Superiore Classic from Technogas.) White marble may be a popular choice for modern farmhouse, but it’s also a solid classic choice.
The backsplash tile is called Jasmine Duquesa cement tile from Walker Zanger. This has a very French country or European country flavor for me so it could be used in any number of eclectic designs.
White subway tile would have been a safe choice in here, and if you are on the fence about whether to go with a patterned tile or solid, I recommend doing a mockup with photoshop before deciding. Remember you can always do a solid color in most areas and accent tiles around the range.
Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Sink
Farm sinks are not just for modern farmhouse kitchens. They are right at home in plenty of traditional and even modern kitchens. (Cabinetry: Litchfield Custom Cabinetry. Hardware: Top Knobs Somerset collection, antique pewter).
Bridge style kitchen faucet: Kohler Artifacts.
More lovely!
As you view this project, I’m sure you have formed an opinion about whether it is too trendy or just right and timeless to your eyes. If the lighting is too modern, it’s an easy swap, yes? What isn’t as simple to remedy is a very trendy tile on the wall or floor with a motif that dates the space.
