Why? Because giggling is good medicine. And life is such a strange journey these days. (Almost nothing surprises us anymore! It’s getting trickier to separate fact from fiction. Are the anxious among us actually the stable, emotionally intelligent ones responding appropriately to mayhem? Are we deepening as a people?) I have no answers. And I only know that leaning, really leaning into joy, helps more than waiting for it to magically arrive. I’ll share a little glimpse of my summer along with silly one-off tweets and random finds for home.
Real Life Behind the Blog, Ridiculous Tweets & Random
Behind the Blog
A couple of weeks ago, these close friends since childhood gathered to reconnect and (of course!) be silly wild kids with the camera’s self-timer. Life moves so fast, and with all of the DIY work the past two years, I have often felt out of the loop. What joy to return. These golden girls still have some cheer squad left in them doncha know.
Earlier this week, flashbacks of 2015 arrived…that was when we dug up weeds and dead growth from our last fixer upper’s courtyard to transform it into a French country sanctuary…now at the Georgian, we’re addressing a former basketball court surrounded by blooming privacy hedges.
(Above) Here’s how it started before we began trimming it back to see what we have to work with. I thought we would cover the whole thing with pea gravel like the last time around. But now I’m not sure and want to think about the function first. Dance floor? Romantic dining? The dragon flies are lovin it:
I want the old fireplace surround to be a focal point, and I’m not sure if I want a long custom banquet table or our vintage set shown here to leave plenty of space for moonlight dancing. It’s a larger space than I imagined. In fact, our tiny house (it’s less than 600 sf) would fit here! Here’s a video just before we started trimming:
Stay tuned.
Patio Chairs Will Fail
Last night, family from out of town gathered here for a last minute dinner. I warned them all that we are new to entertaining in these finished spaces and that it was bound to get interesting.
Outside, as a few of us chatted on the patio, moments after my sister mentioned to someone that her daughter was accident prone, my niece got stuck when a chair collapsed! It’s the 2020s so we all began recording before giving her a hand:
My niece’s smile, the carbonated holiness of familial laughter, a crushed solo cup, and Louie’s precious bare baby feet at the end are as exquisite as the timing of the patio fail. Impossible to ever be perturbed the chair chose THAT moment to give up the ghost!*
And a reminder to check the safety of your deck and patio furniture before guests of varied sizes and age converge!
