Does your skin naturally glow? Yes? Lucky! Over here, with skin pushing 60 and autoimmune issues, I have to mindfully create radiance. And I don’t mean pricey chemical peels, lasers, or med spa visits. My skin’s extra dry, yet I’m not mad at it. Clean beauty brands including Monika Blunder and saie, make an over-50 non-hotflashy glow quite possible these days. And I’m not talking layers of oily gloppy goo that clog your pores like it’s 1972. Omg! How my young skin glowed in ’72! Nixon, The Godfather, Elton, Mary Tyler Moore…the sheer history our skin has lived through is dang impressive! Let’s baby it a little.

Clean Beauty to Glow & What I’m Loving
After applying glowy makeup for a natural, camera-ready look, I played a silly song with lyrics written for my sister’s birthday (it’s a tradition where I write new words each year and post to FB):
I’m well aware I cannot play the piano – it’s simply a tool to help me write music and poetry. 🙂 And it’s an old piano now since it hails from my early childhood. With each move, this baby has moved with me and has the scars to prove it. 🙂
Hope you’ll peek at these new-to-me brands since they are seriously changing the landscape of beauty and makeup.

Dewy Makeup With Built-in Skincare
Let’s peek at the things I’m reaching for since I’m ever on the hunt for clean beauty to soothe and enhance sensitive, rosacea-prone mature skin. A radiant dewy look for summer is awesome, but I want glow across alllll the seasons.
Psst. If you decide to try one of Monika’s liquid blush tints, don’t be surprised about the wee size. The blush is highly pigmented, and just a dot goes far!
Dewy Skin From Monika Blunder
I am currently crushing on all lovely things Monika Blunder! Monika is a seasoned Hollywood makeup artist (think Kate Hudson, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Alba), and she is passionate about creating sophisticated products that aren’t just clean beauty-wise but truly perform. Case in point: her new lip liners are so amazing that I have added this step to my repertoire after skipping it for a decade:
I heard about Monika’s Blunder Cover product from one of my favorite beauty vloggers, Kackie:
Even though Kackie is decades younger, her skin is also on the dry side like mine. So when she says she can’t do without this wildly versatile concealer/foundation in her travel bag, I knew it was worth trying. My skin tone is between shades 3 and 4, so I use both. Instead of painting my face with it, I use the product only where I need it, blending with her tulip brush. The result? My skin looks like skin and not a mask. (Thick foundation masks were totally tubular in 1982, but it’s time to get with the flow and glow, pumpkin.)
You get a sense of Monika’s aesthetic, natural style, and warmth in this:
Try This Tinted Moisturizer from saie
Heard of saie beauty? This very moment, I’m wearing their Glowy Super Gel in Starglow, and it’s one of those super sophisticated illuminizers to wear under foundation, with tinted moisturizer or even alone when you’re after subtle radiance more than full-on-Cullens-in-sunlight-sparkle.
Thrilled to have also discovered their tinted moisturizer since my favorite one from IT Cosmetics was discontinued. Saie’s Slip Tint costs significantly less than my old one and contains mineral sunscreen to boot.
Skip to 8:30 in this video to see Slip Tint on mature skin and hear about it from an over-50 straight shooter:
I can’t wait to also try saie’s Serum Foundation (85% skin care serum and 15% weightless pigment). And their Sun Melt Cream-Balm looks dreamy when you’re someone after a dewy bronzy California surfergirl look all year round. No filters or edits for this selfie a few moments ago:
Hydrate Anytime & Anywhere
Wondering about the space-age object in the center of all the clean beauty finds on that banner above? If I am promoting any gadget here, then you know said machine must be easy enough for a 3-year old to operate. This one’s just the right size for your desk or bedside table.
Hey Dewy’s portable humidifier instantly creates a lovely spa-like environment for your skin while it uplifts the spirit with unplugged ease!
Unplugged?
It delivers a cool mist for 8 hours on a charge so get yer beauty sleep while hydrating in dreamland! Allergies? Ease them with cool mist bliss. (Imagine this go-to relief on dry winter evenings ahead!)
Unplug & Uncover a Dewier Look
A nice soak with hydrating potions followed by massaging into the skin more hydrating potions? Always a good idea. And also productive. Think about it. Everything in the culture clamors for us to hustle and cram just one more productive task into the day. But resting, recharging and relaxing are good for our health and hence, productive.
In the self-care soothing moment above, bath soak, a relaxing subtle-scented soy candle, and a dry brush rest on an inexpensive accent tray table near my tub.
Flowery fragrance easily overwhelms me. Wondering about Shampure’s scent? While “lavender” pops up in descriptions, it’s not a lavender note I get. Rather, Shampure has this sexy, subtle, complex, mysterious Parisian essence.
Finally, Shampure comes in a hand/body wash! Do not underestimate Shampure. I know folks who have been using the shampoo as body wash for decades like I have done in recent years. There is simply NOTHING like this unisex fragrance I have found elswewhere.
Drybrushing is an awesome way to energize, slough off dead skin cells, and glow.
More Glowing Possibilities
If you’re a certain age, you probably know about BOOM by Cindy Joseph. I have bought all of their products, and while it’s hard to pick a fav, this is the one I reach for most often:
I love it as a hydrating, comforting, lip balm most of all (it can be used everywhere on the skin!). And I bought two – one for my makeup bag and one for my nightstand since I need it every night before bed.
What else do I do before my head hits the pillow? Skincare! And it’s never drudgery because the act itself is relaxing self-care. Oak Essentials is my go-to, and I actually worry when I’m running low because they sometimes sell out!
The ritual oil has a definite organic-natural fragrance you may or may not love so if you need a recommendation for a scent-free option, it’s hard to beat OGEE’s Jojoba Glow Face Oil especially if you have sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.
While we’re considering cozy things encouraging rest…
Should We Drop the Over-50 Labels?
By the way, I’m considering dropping all of the “over-50” yada yada whenever I do lifestyle posts. In a sense, I feel I’m drawing attention to something largely irrelevant. “Products great for dry skin” is probably a more accurate description.
What other beauty finds are in my bathroom vanity this very moment? The Chanel Sublimage foundation is extremely luxurious to wear when I’m going out. The color match? Spot on.
Don’t get me started on Glossier’s eye color (in the color, Slip), MILK makeup multi-sticks (Werk) and Tower 28 cream blush (Magic Hour) – they are holy grails I keep re-purchasing because they are that good.
Clean Vs. Not-Clean Beauty?
Not sure how to discern clean from non-clean beauty? You’re in good company! It is getting tougher to tease out all of the particulars. We’re all reading ingredients labels, but even natural ingredients can make skin angry. Whenever possible, choose trustworthy brands who value clean beauty.
I want to support indie brands like saie and Monika Blunder who are passionate about botanicals and healthy ingredients.
When makeup products perform like high quality skincare in disguise? We all win.
Peace to you right where you are.
