It’s about to get more ridiculous, one-off, and then *BLOOP* mystical up in here! Menopause-happy? Sure. Because: planet Michele. Because: post-midlife land typically skews toward “unhappy.” Also because aging serves up surprising, mortifying, lifegiving wonder…amen? If we are still laughing, at least we know we’re managing. Let’s giggle and peek at Over 50 Menopause-Happy Beauty Hacks as summer collapses and autumn begins to tease.

Over 50 Menopause-Happy Beauty & Humor
Hack #1: Disguise Skincare as Makeup
Some brands stand out for this hack. Iris & Romeo, for example. If you’re a makeup minimalist type sensitive to fragrance and ingredients? Their pretty potions may be a gamechanger.

Here’s what’s in my cart:

Why? My almost-60 skin I live in is sun-damaged, extra dry and rosacea-prone. I’m nearly out of my jar of Best Skin Days (super light coverage). Also considering this set:

I need a hydrating concealer for these dark circles, and my extra sensitive skin needs protection. Do not stop wearing sunscreen in September, kittens! My worst blistery sunburns happened in September’s Northern Illinois sunshine. Love me some Weekend Skin with spf 50.

Hack #2: Treat Lips to a Treatment That’s a Gloss
Could this lip treatment and gloss packed with hydrating active ingredients really work to visibly plump >50 lips and protect them with a juicy slick of color?

And what if your lips are extra dry or you hate the sting from plumpers? This is your new fav. My go-to. Who knew a comfy lip oil could deliver joy to the routine?

Hack #3: SEE RIDICULOUSness and Absurdity & LAUGH
Laughter helps as medicine.

One of the perks of being over 50 is learning the art of letting go of things that don’t matter and realizing a new freedom to laugh at aging itself.

Back to skin matters. I am still pampering mine. Forget about miracle promises or preserving youth! I’m into comfort and a less dehydrated appearance.

As summer fades, I can count on September cruelty to deliver the worst skin of the year. Uneven from sunny days, more coarse in texture, and more hyperpigmentation than I can say. The needs of my skin change seasonally so I treat it tenderly.

Hack #4: Colostrum Spiked Coffee
If your gut could use some support, here’s what is helping mine. The unflavored variety is absolutely delicious straight from the scoop or mixed into coffee:
I appreciate how ARMRA offers 400+ bioactive nutrients that work at the cellular level, paving the way for this menopause-happy body’s health and vitality.

Hack #5: Seize Opportunities for Personal Growth
It’s good to keep checking our emotional response to the term ‘aging.’ Does it stir up fear? I have my moments. Laughter helps. Tears too.

Is anyone else laughing at “pro-aging” and “minimal makeup” marketing campaigns try to profit by promoting celebrity makeup-free faces? Hilarious.

I vascillate between wanting to be that ancient woman I see on the beach with leathery tan skin and the sensible one slathered in SPF never without her sun umbrella. Skin cancer is a threat, but sun is so important and healing to my particular autoimmune issues.

Just like the rest of life which seems to be a collection of hold on/let go and take risks/be safe.

I used to think holding paradox meant reaching a level of spiritual maturity with the help of abundant grace. Right where I am, I don’t think arriving at higher enlightenment is the point.

Has assessment of my capacity to hold paradox or attempts to grow more spacious solved what I hoped it would solve?

My experience shows that allowing my life to teach and reveal is what it means to “let God” come disguised.

Over-50 Self-Kindness & Restful Unproductive Moments to Simply Be
Buying the proper candle or bath scrub aint gonna change our circumstances or keep stress from coming. But are there opportunities to slow down for more self-compassion?
Because everywhere I turn is another reminder that I should be worrying about how productive I am, how it’s a problem when I’m not moving, conquering, and racing.

Is that what I’m here to do? Race until I collapse at the end? Who am I when I am still, and how have I been conditioned to be terrified of that still (and let’s face it, slightly bored) woman?
Goodness.
We’re all primed in this culture to labor efficiently and effectively (with the help of various technologies to make it “easier”…hahahaha) and also expected to smile and look good along the way. Can we even define what constitutes “natural” and “unnatural” with any sort of intelligence in the 2020s?
I have lived quite enough unnaturally feverish, preoccupied with appearances, hustling for worthiness chapters. When slower life feels a little uncomfortable, it’s a cue I need even more.

Fall Fashion
Welly boot socks are my best friends in winter, and I wear them over bare feet around the house. If I have to step outside, I step into Ilse Jacobsen lace up rain boots (I prefer the shorter styles to the tall).

YOU: How many different makeup products do you really need, sweetpea?
me: ALL. I like trying them to decide what I’ll recommend. I have a weakness for art supplies!

As you can, grant yourself more opportunities for silliness and shenanigans. Carve out time for silence and stillness. Remember that if times grow hard and suffering comes, you aren’t alone in it. There is but one suffering that we’re sharing. Transformation is not some peaceful landing we’re inching toward. It IS the inching process. We’re all inching and all teachers for each other.
Love and…
Peace to you right where you are.
