Belgian & French Color Story: Blue Gray & Green is inspired by the dreamily timeless and tranquil interiors from a favorite designer and her European Country inspired cottages. For me, there is something utterly engaging yet calming about quiet, natural, coastal colors reminiscent of driftwood, the sea, and hazy heavenly skies. Designer Desiree Ashworth (@beljarhome) masterfully creates moments with these beautiful hues.

While these colors are inspired by nature, they also have their own mystique.
Weaving such sophisticated colors through the design tapestry of a European influenced home for a lovely family?
Surely a peaceful backdrop for love.
The sophisticated colors mixed here are chalkier and less precious than pastels.
Another layer of unexpected loveliness within this stone cottage?
The fact it resides nowhere near the South of France–suggesting we may perhaps capture a measure of its watercolored essence as well!

Green is definitely still having a moment, and I admire this whispery celery tone of the lantern.
The stained trim is so unique!

Soft Greens and Blues Are the Colors I Choose
There’s a special place in my heart for French greys, French blues, and French greens.
I especially love those quieter, faded, subdued, and complex colors you can’t easily describe.
Is it more grey than blue? Somewhere between a hazy sky and a kitten’s coat?
So cashmere-like, you are compelled to take a nap inside it?
Yum.
For me, those are the colors of dreams.
Our Muse to Set the Tone
Who can sing a cowboy lullaby summoning greens and blues better than James?
Inspiring Gustavian French Cottage
Desiree of Beljar Home and Decor de Provence designed the interiors and with her husband and father dreamed this Gustavian French cottage into reality.
The kitchen’s subway tiles are Aqua from Ann Sacks.
The interiors are luxe yet humbly layered with collected antiques, rustic elegance, and coastal Frenchy greys, blues, and greens this sea-loving homeowner admires.
Surely it is also a lesson in muted majesty.
French & Belgian Paint Colors: Greys
While Desiree shared on her long-running inspiration site Decor de Provence that she favors colors from Flamant, I’m also including options beyond that line.
Make sure to try sample pots first since your unique lighting, geographic location, and keen eye will determine if the color works in your space.
Here are a couple of lovely and also atmospheric blue-grey paint colors I have used.
This next grey paint color may not strike you as having blue undertones, but in a room with lots of sunlight, it truly reads blue-grey.

Beyond White Paint for Trim
The trim in Desiree’s Gustavian French home is stained a custom a blue-grey-green…so unusual in American homes and lends such Swedish charm!
Trim was also stained this color in her prior French home (so interesting with those creamy walls).
It can take years to hunt down the perfect vintage piece for your French country home – the cupboard above, for example. However, sometimes you can score a replica – see this post with a chippy vintage style glass front cabinet.
Resources for Decor & Furniture
As for sources for the beautiful furnishings and decor in her home, the homeowner is also a shop owner at Beljar Home.
The majority of the pieces in this home are collected, antique, and vintage (a favorite source is Brambles and Blossoms in Provo, UT).
Desiree says reclaimed light fixtures are one of her must-haves so you will have to hunt down these European fixtures! But maybe you’ll be able to score them at her new venture with Bell Jar Home!
