Organize Your Closets & Ideas to Make Them Pleasant
Pretty Lighting in a Walk-In
For many years, no matter where we have lived, I have addressed the lighting in our closet. In most cases, that has meant swapping out ugly builder’s specials with sparkly flushmount ceiling lights or chandeliers. Track lighting may also make sense, and believe it or not, tracks are not necessarily an outdated notion to avoid.
The point is to think about how you can (1) usher in a good amount of light and (2) choose a fixture that lifts your mood since you’ll enjoy it everyday.
Natural Seagrass Warms Up White Shelves
If you have white modular shelving or even white wire shelves in your closets and pantry, they can be warmed and organized with woven baskets. The key is sticking to just one or two different styles.
Measure your shelves and then shop for the proper size, and if you find a style you like, make sure to order plenty since they may not be available months from now.
Turn an Awkward Room or Spare Bedroom into a Cloffice
Last year, we addressed this small bedroom at the Georgian and made it multifunctional. Find the full story HERE. Now, it provides storage, a place to work or apply makeup, and was designed to have sufficient space for a bed so as not to lose its identity as a bedroom. (In fact, this room has a closet with bifold doors (not visible in the photos) we didn’t touch. The room suddenly became a flex space instead of an awkward oversight.
Add a Dresser to the Closet
For my closet in our former bedroom, I gave a vintage dresser found on FBMktplc a makeover with chalk paint and vintage wallpaper lined drawers. A vintage crystal chandelier and little touches transformed it from utility space into romantic dressing room space.
The mirror on the dresser is old, and I stenciled it with a French script so it appears etched and even older. In another corner of the closet (not seen), I placed a vintage mirror and makeup/jewelry area. These angel guys are always near me and still make me smile.
This closet arrangement may not be possible or even desirable for your needs, but the idea is to make it a functional destination suggestive of a retreat. Is there a place for a small chest and lamp? A pretty small-scaled chair?
What about a wall sconce where you need not hire an electrician but use that puck light hack (battery operated puck light typically used under kitchen cabinets placed where where the bulb goes and which the lampshade covers).

Slowly Still Gets it Done
I no longer pride myself on “saving the world” in a day. Instead of going crazy with all that adrenaline and attempting to finish an organization project in a day, I now chip away at tasks.
Short bursts where you get a little done will add up in no time at all.

Actionable & Practical Ideas from Luxurious Dream Closets
What a difference when clothes are hung with same colors together. Also, those picture lights are so shop-like, and such a savvy idea if you are building a home.
A sea of white calm!
While it seems luxurious to actually have a peninsula in a bedroom closet, the color combination in here is inspiring.
The fantasy can be yours!
Remember how the Giannettis hid their clothing behind these linen panels hanging from unlacquered brass rings/rods? What a soft alternative to bifold doors!
In my dressing room in our French country house, I stenciled the wall with a gorgeous Fortuny stencil, and it only took a couple of hours for a dramatic look I kept for years.
Stenciled accent walls are underrated!
If you have a spacious closet or dressing room, I can imagine a table like this surrounded by readymade white modular shelves and hanging storage.
Here’s a book to help us not so much create a perfect paradise as learn to notice the beauty of the worn and weathered.
