I grew up with gallery walls, and my mom always did a beautiful job creating them. My sisters also do an epic job displaying their collected treasures upon the wall. But me? While I have created gallery walls over the years, I quickly became bored with them. With a new house, maybe there will be a fresh opportunity for one! So much to admire here today from these talented creatives, and we’ll explore Gallery Wall Ideas as well as inexpensive prints to add to yours!
Design Inspiration & Gallery Wall Ideas
Add Architectural Interest
Jackye Lanham’s Kiawah Island living room has a beautiful fireplace with framed art hung on either side (the right side is below). Should you not have the space or desire for built-ins flanking a fireplace, consider adding architecture with art.
Believe it or not, the room above is in a new build that only looks like an old carriage house!
Calm Collections
Sometimes a tidy gallery wall is just the look you’re after. In a stairway, all of the frames for the botanical prints are identical. You can still find affordable amazing vintage or antique books with botanical, bird, butterfly, and landscape prints that are frame-worthy for your gallery wall.
Looking for a pretty warm beige paint color? It is Farrow & Ball’s Shaded White in the above space.
The thirty black frames in this installation below contrast with the pale wall, yet the composition stays very serene and modern.
I love the reflection of the art in the gorgeous black marble table!
Laid Back Freespirited Galleries
In my friend Jenny’s former art studio, a bright yellow wall is an explosion of happy color. Not all gallery walls must be carefully planned out mathematically or Martha style.
This reminds me of a gallery wall I created years ago with a zillion unframed favorite family photos and washi tape. It was such a conversational moment for everyone who passed by that wall!
Understated & Calm Wall Art
One of my favorite bedrooms of all time! This small Stockholm apartment is so understated and serene yet big on style! Gallery walls can work even if you love minimal style.
How about that painted baseboard detail?
Black Backdrop for a Gallery Wall
Sherry Hart is a favorite interior designer who knows her way around neutral color palettes. The gallery walls she creates on deep dark walls are always epic. Consider adding drama with a gallery black wall.
We love that she shares the paint colors for many of her projects!
Have a powder room that needs some personality and interest?
I love this idea for guests to enjoy!
Boring Hall to Art Gallery
Get ready to sigh! Floating shelves can be perfect for a rotating collection of art!
Summer Thornton designed the unforgettable interiors in this home, and you can find more inspiration from her work HERE.
Collected Silhouettes
Enjoy the hunt for art and pieces to display. This next gallery wall moment from Nora Murphy’s book pulls at my heartstrings. The Swedish immigrant family who cared for me and my siblings in childhood had framed silhouettes and art in the stairway of their Dutch Colonial home.
I’m reminded that the way we decorate a wall is not a small thing. We are creating backdrops for memories whether we are conscious of it or not.
Mixing Media on the Wall
This gallery wall at Patina Farm by Brooke and Steve Giannetti takes my breath away. Mix framed pieces with other art on the wall.
There’s something quite modern about how the contemporary paintings mix with the traditional plaster sculpture.
