We’re revisiting a quarantine-era DIY we tackled to elevate a bedroom in our former home. That room has become a nursery for the new owner, and I’m not sure if the Tree wallpaper mural from Photowall is staying. As for me, I can’t wait to use the same pattern again. It has such a modern feel paired with an age old grisaille tradition. This Grisaille Wallpaper from PHOTOWALL would work in any number of spaces! I’ll also share décor sources from this bedroom in case you care to shop the look. A super simple afternoon DIY statement wall brought nature-lovely calm to a bedroom, and I highly recommend trying it.
Grisaille PHOTOWALL Wallpaper Accent Wall
A second floor spare bedroom that functioned frequently as an office needed love…big time.
I loved the view of peaceful trees outside the window, but the blank white wall opposite my work table? Totally uninspiring.
Care for a little proof?
Here is the space before we replaced the windows, painted the walls Benjamin Moore “White” and installed new carpet and a chandelier:
It truly needed finishing touches. I have always loved tonal murals a little more modern in feel and a little less Renaissance…this Fornasetti wallpaper for instance is still a favorite. (I even spied that wallpaper in an ultra luxurious space in Summer Thornton’s book WONDERLAND!
What a blessing to partner with Photowall to pretty up a simple white bedroom.
The light changes in here during the day:
ACCENTS IN THE ROOM: Find a modern task lamp HERE, silver toned accent tables HERE, and you’ll notice this animal print throw received excellent reviews! Similar curtains from PB are HERE, bedding is PB and also Piu Belle, and quilt is similar to this lovely one. Pottery Barn’s Clayton Quilt is similar, and I like it even more than mine. (The MCM swivelicious Copenhagen chair is vintage RH.)
Why Choose PHOTOWALL?
This Swedish company uses only the highest quality materials and printing for their wallpaper. I have been wallpapering since the ’80s, and this is easily the best quality paper. I chose the premium with matte finish, and it’s dreamy.
Your wallpaper will be printed to the exact dimensions you specify to fit perfectly on your wall, and paste is included as well.
Murals can be pricey. Yet even a 12′ expanse of custom quality wallpaper loveliness is surprisingly affordable. And if you’re doing half the wall with chair rail…boom.
BONUS: After placing an order, your paper arrives in a couple of days! So definitely don’t fret about the fact it is traveling from Sweden!
The accent pillows are vintage RH and will probably show up on my bed at the new house. (I am soooooo not a good blogger.
I grow attached to certain things and don’t feel like changing it up even to drop a bunch of links for the new stuff!)
A Grisaille Pattern Mural
The lovely wallpaper mural I chose? It is called Trees White, and the scene is an example of grisaille painting.
Pronounced griz-EYE, grisaille is French for “grey” and refers to an artist’s use of a limited palette.
It’s that restrained palette that makes it so desirable for me. Even though there’s a pattern going on with the wallpaper, it lives like a neutral.
And I have always loved how cool greys work with warm golden or ochre tones.
Back to grisaille…the first layer of a painting (underpainting) is often created with grey.
I admire grisaille for its understated quiet beauty. It adds a restful, contemplative quality to a bedroom (or any room!).
BTW. The online order process was a piece of cake, and the wallpaper arrives perfectly packaged!
How to Install the Wallpaper Mural
The video below demystified installing the mural’s clearly numbered vertical strips.
It was easy enough that we installed another one in a bonus room flex space – see it HERE.
7 Tips for a Successful DIY Accent Wall
- Take time to consider whether to wallpaper the entire wall or above a chair rail. If there will be furniture against the wall, it may make sense to accent the upper wall.
- If your budget allows for the higher grade paper, go for it. I love the matte finish which is not reflective. Additionally, I can attest it is scrub-able and extra strong.
- Order installation supplies when you order the paper…easy peasy.
- Make sure to add the paste to the gallon of water to mix the two.
- Be patient about getting the first panel pasted to the wall. The rest of the panels will line up with it.
- Brush each section of the wall with a generous amount of paste. If the paper isn’t sticking, brushing paste on the paper may help too.
- One of my seams didn’t appear perfect 24 hours after installation. I was still able to easily tweak it with more paste and the seam roller.

More Peeks at the Bedroom
I shopped my house to create a tranquil bedroom and workspace.
The abstract art is a piece I painted in 2010.
While I mostly paint seascapes, it reflects a moody atmospheric desert moment.
The bed is a MCM estate sale find, but you can’t even see the low headboard! Color me pillow happy with a few favorites collected from RH!
Our rustic knotty alder interior doors replaced paper-y cheap white ones we inherited with this home.
Photowall provided the product for this post in exchange for my honest review, and I highly recommend their wonderful offerings, service and artistry.
Mural Wallpaper Review
I’m thrilled with how this mural enhanced this multipurpose space!
The wallpaper introduces interest, nature, and artistry to a boring bedroom while harmonizing beautifully with towering trees outside.
How lovely when a workspace can become a sweet “tree house” (or nursery!).
If you are seeking inspiration for a room in your own home, I’m confident you’ll find something to fancy from PHOTOWALL. You can even have a mural made from a photo!

Truly! Yep – So when I sit at the table with my laptop, I can gaze at the trees outside the window and across the room. They are wonderful teachers for me, and I love them so much. xox

Thanks, Bev. Yep – it is so strange to not feel the break between the work week and weekend! Be well! 🙂
That is so gorgeous. I am tempted to try it, but a little chicken, too. I haven’t wallpapered in a long time, as you say, but that is so striking! (Also, talking about wallpapering reminds me of the first time I put up a wallpaper border in my living room, years ago, and my friend said I needed to glue it down, even though it was prepasted. So, it bonded to the drywall like it was part of the wall, and getting it off took forever! haha) Hope you are having a feel good day.

I certainly hear you about being cautious about wallpaper. We have done our fair share over the decades. In our first home, a beautiful Chicago bungalow, the previous owners never bothered to take down the wallpaper – they simply papered over it, so we did the same thing! Ha! Layers and layers! That home was later torn down for a McMansion. What I love about this mural is its timelessness. Wallpaper may fall from favor, but murals can surely stand the test of time far better. I wish you could see ours in person – a huge bang for the buck! 🙂 I’m having good days and bad days and just muddling through without putting pressure on myself to live my best life, ya know? xox
It looks amazing, and I would love to get the courage to do this. Yes, same here about the good and bad days. Keep resting and keep on keeping on! I’m featuring the post at the TFT party tomorrow. 😊 xox

Thank you so much, Pam. Busy day so I will join you at the gathering when I can – I love carving out time for inspiration and connection with you wonderful ladies!
Hi, I love the serene feeling the mural commands. Just wondering,,,,,,your bed is positioned in front of windows. Do you use blinds?
Author
No blinds – it’s a spare bedroom that is only used occasionally as an office so I haven’t needed them. 🙂
