Depending on who you ask, modern farmhouse as a design style is almost entirely out of style for homeowners or firmly rooted. Let’s explore the topic and rustic charm of an eclectic mix of interiors and exteriors I hope you will PIN! What’s your take? Black and White Modern Farmhouse Design: Timeless or Tired Now?

Black and White Modern Farmhouse Design: Timeless or Tired Now?
Is Modern Farmhouse Still Trending?
My own opinion is influenced by what I see trending on Pinterest HERE, where searches for country farmhouse interiors and exteriors are only increasing.
There’s plenty of grey area since any style can be executed dreadfully, oui?
Doesn’t the variation of white sidings on this new home create dimension and interest?
What I appreciate about country houses with their informality is the mix of materials (brick, wood sidings, batten siding, shiplap, stone, planks, metal roof) that can combine.
Evolving Names for Country Design
And can we talk about how often “farmhouse” is now used as a synonym these days for “casual,” “unfussy,” or even “whimsical?”
I mean, I wouldn’t look at this gorgeous bathroom designed by Sherry Hart with texture and think “modern farmhouse” as much as “traditional with a funky fresh twist,” and yet it is likely to be pinned to plenty of modern farmhouse Pinterest boards.
Let’s face it…country decorating is not going anywhere, yet doesn’t what we used to term “country” easily veer into “modern farmhouse” territory?
Online Research Only Complicates the Matter!
While a major real estate site says the modern farmhouse trend is over, here in the heartland, businesses selling farmhouse wares are still booming.
The NY Times sees modern farmhouse trends diversifying and evolving, and House Beautiful predicts farmhouse style will safely stay put. (Which would not please readers of Apartment Therapy who *no big surprise* want barn doors and shiplap to swiftly disappear.)
Lord knows everything under the sun falls in and out of favor so you may as well decorate to FEEL GOOD and to FEEL AUTHENTICALLY YOU and not the the avatar marketers predict you are. Right now, I personally want to feel ageless, open, optimistic, and resilient.
Here’s a glorious project with traditional farmhouse architecture and design elements that have staying power.
Rustic Wood Ceiling in a Classic White Kitchen With Black Accents
If you love rich architectural details and traditional designs interpreted in fresh modern ways, you’ll love these inspiring projects.
Black accents on the counter stools and range hoods create high contrast.
It can be unnerving to make the decision to paint windows black, but the effect can be stunning.
Traditional Farmhouse With Freshened Modernity
When all of the furniture, decorations, and art is old or when everything’s new, the look can feel very off. Striking a balance is much easier if you enlist an interior designer.
And should your designer recommend wallpapering a ceiling, it’s okay to think long and hard about it. But designers bring a boldness born from experience! The important thing is bringing patterns and prints and colors together that you love. I would adore looking up at this ceiling:
Subtle Nods to Farmhouse
Farmhouse style doesn’t have to be smack you in the face with kitschy barn lights and rustic signs, barn doors, open shelves, batten siding, or shiplap. Understated is beautiful in its fluidity. The vintage style tile in this bathroom feels classic and casual in a beautiful modern farmhouse.
Modern Lighting & Magnificent Architecture
If red is your favorite color, you may admire this casual bedroom:
Whimsy & Handsome Livability
Black and white tiled floors (especially checkered patterns!) are very popular right now, and it’s easy to imagine why.
You can introduce any color into the space with ease.
If you love a white farmhouse with shutters or painted brick home exteriors, this may appeal:
White sidings with black trim create drama and dimension.

Magnolia’s Way With Black and White Modern Farmhouse
Farmhouse evangelist of shiplap revival, designer Joanna Gaines celebrates black and white boldly at the Silos.
When we visited Waco, the repetition was everywhere from the market to the bakery to Magnolia Table where we sneaked in to dine even before the official opening.
Bright White’s Surge in Popularity
While painting exterior trims black is hardly a new idea to emphasize architectural details, the contrast with bright white sort of is. Two hundred years ago, off-white was just beginning to become a color for house exteriors. In fact, the super whites we see today weren’t even options back then.
History of Painted Exteriors
Before the Industrial Revolution, paint was mixed in small batches from naturally found pigments in the earth such as red oxide or yellow ocher. White paint was reserved for trim.
Modern Take on Black & White in a Kitchen
While it may be more commonplace to paint walls a crisp white and accent with black objects, here’s a tip from a favorite design professional:
“When the plan calls for an open pantry….don’t panic. Instead paint it black and add pretty things.” (Sherry Hart)
Black and White Modern Farmhouse Style
Modern farmhouse style and a classic white farmhouse will often rely on the modernity of black and white mixed with nostalgic, traditional, rustic, and natural elements.
The dining area with wood decking, above, is an example of getting the harmony right.
So much country charm!
Parisian style bistro chairs may suggest something other than farmhouse or modernity, yet they are right at home in modern environments as well as Old World ones.
The mix of textures within the restrained color palette keep it all very fresh and modern.

The rugs truly do make a difference – and I wonder if folks realize how the older ones work so well in a new build. Thank you for reading, Holly – enjoy your LOVE DAY!
as to me it’s far away from a real farmhouse style

I always enjoy the photos you post on your page. I believe, like you, that we should decorate for our own personal style and what makes us feel like our house is our home.
Farmhouse style has been around for ever so it isn’t going anywhere; although it has been refined over the years and there are so many personal takes on this style. Black and white is always a classic no matter what style decor.
Just my two cents worth.
Thank you again for a timely post.

Thank you for sharing your perspective and enriching the discussion of what has freshened ‘farmhouse.’ Without those personal strokes, it’s just a showroom, and when we are confident enough to weave in the objects that make our hearts sing, the design truly comes to life. Thanks so much for reading, friend.
I love these images. I think farmhouse is here to stay, but it continues to evolve. I think it’s a much less cluttered look than in the past, with a more modern, streamlined look and ageless design. All the images you shared today are most definitely farmhouse or farmhouse influenced. I guess the bottom line is what speaks to us as individuals and makes us happy? Aren’t we lucky that we can each define farmhouse in any way we want? 😉 thank you for your great post today and the beautiful images. Happy Weekend!

You’re so right – the fact that the boundaries are blurring is a sign of how we are also evolving and open to the synthesis of a variety of influences. Thank you for your insight and wisdom. Bon weekend, friend. 🙂
Always beautiful…always appreciate your unique perspective on life.
