White Modern Farmhouse: 6 Lovely Design Elements will revisit a friend’s historic restored home which I have shared before. This extensive renovation project took our friends years to complete but brought them years of enjoyment with their active family.
The original 1875 house in Barrington, IL had to remain yet blends pleasingly with the expansive new build.

White Modern Farmhouse: 6 Lovely Design Elements
Location of This Beautiful White Modern Farmhouse
On an idyllic tree-lined street near quaint downtown Barrington, Illinois, this board-and-battened historic farmhouse took years to complete and was worth every bit of blood, sweat, and tears!
A Modern Farmhouse’s Thoughtful Craftsmanship
This beautiful traditional country home was imagined by a collaboration between the design savvy homeowners and also Glen Ellyn architect Jamie Simoneit of Z+O Architecture + Interiors.
6 Modern Farmhouse Design Details
1. Amish Custom Woodworking
Heavy Amish custom woodworking and trim is top notch quality construction of furniture built to last as well as rich integrity.
Let’s see it in action:
2. White Board and Batten Exterior Siding
White cedar siding and cedar board and batten grace the exterior. Ever wonder about installing board and batten?
Here’s a helpful tutorial for a board and batten shed:
But what if it is a board and batten INTERIOR application in which you’re interested?
Here’s a great article on board and batten.
3. Galvanized Metal Roofing
Galvalume metal roofing played a stunning role in this beautiful modern farmhouse, and in case you’re in the mood to geek out on galvanized roofs…
4. Light Maximizing Windows
Plenty of windows affording maximum natural light were an important design element for the farmhouse addition, and I can attest to the pay off!
5. Hardwood Flooring Stained Black
Black and Ebony stained wood floors add modern edginess to farmhouse style and also play a starring role in this modern farmhouse.
Just in case you’re curious about the difference between black and ebony or are interested in sampling a good stain, this may help:
6. Industrial Farmhouse Interior Design
Industrial farmhouse style is more challenging to get right when you’re building from scratch without existing features such as old brick, a loft, or exposed ductwork.
For this modern farmhouse, the “modern” element is achieved with a light, airy, minimal interpretation of traditional style freshened with contemporary amenities.

Hi Donna. I’m fairly certain it is a custom piece, but I can find out for you. I’ll ask my friend and circle back here. Thanks for reading.
Love the touches of green here and there! Especially in the kitchen.

Oh, that green in person is so soft and unexpected – it adds a freshness and balance to the more industrial elements. Thanks for reading.
The video of the young man was very touching. The tears in my eyes are witness to the emotion I felt as I listened to his story, his struggle, and final success. It’s the power of love that made the man he is today. We all need to be loved and need to love in return.
Blessings on this beautiful Sunday morning,

I felt it too – stories of resurrection and transformation remind us what is possible and how love changes everything. Peace to you, this afternoon, lovely one.
I meant to enquire about your bathroom wallpaper. I’ve been wanting to do my main bath but nothing really jumped out from all the samples until I saw your bath. Is it grey/ cream/ taupe/ brown? And, who makes it?

It’s Thibaut and called “Lizette.” It’s a silvery background and just the most pleasing color palette! I only used one roll of it for this bathroom which doesn’t get used very often (if it was going to be full of moisture all of the time, I might avoid any wallpaper) so I just did the sink wall and painted the other walls a muted grey. 🙂
Thank you for the information on your beautiful wallpaper. It’s the guest bath. While it is not used full time, I do have guests often. Hmmm

We have wallpapered our bathrooms in past homes and didn’t have an issue with the moisture affecting the paper’s adhesion – it’s a great topic to ponder!
Well I just love everything about that home, from the board and batten, (something I use all the time in my fixers) to the metal roof, to that gorgeous green, white & black kitchen! Lot’s of great inspiration here! Keep it comin’….

Thanks so much for reading, Celia. Those pistachio green Amish made cabinets are so historically significant and unique! It must be so gratifying for you to be able to apply the design ideas you love to the projects at hand. So grateful to have you here. xox
Fabulous farmhouse, Michele! Serene, classic and just perfect mid-west beauty!
