Ya know that saying “if you want something done, ask a busy person?”Pretty much how this timecrunched blogger rolls nowadays. (In the past, my perfectionist self might want a week to plan, shoot, and create a post with original content.) So when I decided I would share (today!) a decor piece in our home that’s special to me with the backstory, I knew I wouldn’t have time for perfection.
However, the imperfectionista
new me routinely
lives dangerously like that now.
I got up extra early this morning to snap
shots honoring a favorite decor piece in our home
and am so so glad I took the time
since it’s indeed true that
“Happiness is not having what you want;
it’s wanting what you have!”
A Favorite Design Piece.
This treasure we own–
an old oak Belgian sideboard–
keeps providing joy AND storage.
It is in our two-story great room,
and I honestly have no idea what
we would have placed here had we
not owned this beautiful cupboard.
You may remember seeing the sideboard
within my studio in our former home.
It’s massive (9 feet wide) yet smartly shallow (14 inches),
and I can fit a whole bunch of other beloved decor pieces inside!
We bought the sideboard locally more than a decade ago,
and it hails from a Belgian estate (circa 1930s).
It comes with all the romance of an aged,
rustic, castle-worthy cupboard.
What We Love About It.
We love its lacy ironwork, the naked natural oak,
the ability to lock it, and the rugged presence
it brings to our great room.
The sideboard works really well in this setting,
I think because of the rusticity of the woods outside.
We traded pristine manicured acres of lawn at our
last home for a “camp-like” mini forest where dappled
light is reflected through soaring leafy trees,
casting beautiful patterns of light upon the ground.
It’s where a fox, 9 turkeys, squirrels, owls,
and a dozen deer frolic and appear daily.
The sideboard is handsome, and “a piece of home”
etched on our sons’ memories.
How We Display the Decor Piece.
HA!
No challenge there.
It has presence von presence.
The trick is making sure it doesn’t completely
steal the show!
When we found this fornlorn fixer upper more
than 2 years ago, we instantly knew where the
sideboard would go (ditto with the rest
of the furnishings…everything has
remained where we
asked movers to place it on move-in day!).
Enjoy a bazillion pictures of my favorite
decor piece basking in this morning’s gentle light.
By now, you are well-acquainted with my
design style: simple, frugal, and lovely with no fuss!
A branch from a Burning Bush just outside
our front door, some beautiful design books,
wood beads, and rustic wood candleholders
rest on top for now…I change it up often.
I found the modern concrete lamps at Homegoods,
and I love their geometry and simplicity.
You may recall the giant art piece I painted
to go above this sizable cupboard–it’s
huge, on wood, and essentially an abstract
portrait of our family, though you
might interpret it differently.
So much storage space!
Truly a stylist’s dream cabinet.
Your turn.
Have a favorite decor piece in your home…
an antique, a family heirloom, a masterpiece
created by your child, or a special clock?
I’m all ears.
I’m so thankful for reminders
to get still when work life gets truly busy
and to notice everyday light and beauty
right under my nose.
