Gentle as the fresh snow frosting the willow in our backyard comes an invitation to quieted festive cheer. White Christmas dreaming. Whispery, faded pastels. Ethereal, gossamer, Nordic blanc sur blanc. Serenity now. Decorating glimpses of effortless elegance echoing good news, echoing joy.

White Christmas Dreaming & Black Friday Ideas
Pale Holiday Look: Does it Work Everywhere?

Is it possible to achieve this airy look without access to a home with good bones, vintage collectibles, and antique treasures?

What keeps a white Christmas decor look memorable and magical?

Turns out, eclectic style, architecture and design are amenable to this hushed approach.

Even without beautiful old wood floors painted white! (But truth be told, I’m forever aching to have that look somewhere in my home!)

My Petite Maison always tugs the right heartstrings in her features of white Nordic cottage moments whispering in the heartland.

Where there’s creative spirit, there’s often a way!

Christmas Trees That Breathe
Not all Christmas trees require abundant ornamentation or even white flocking.

I love a white tabletop tree and mine looks dreamier in a cloud of tulle.

Greenery can be white’s best friend.

An airy look where sparkly white lights add glow is easy to love.

Also note how the airy Christmas tree above seems more important with its surrounding sea of tone on tone!

No one knows or does white better than Pam Pierce!

Not sure if I will have a blogworthy Christmas DIY to share this year (my white paper snowflakes for the stairs were a nostalgic pleasure to make), but chances are good it will be white!
Collections for Color
MyPetiteMaison’s vintage angel wings (an old Nativity costume?) in a gorgeous hue of blush-white to my eyes are a breathtaking art installation and suggest a holy night in Bethlehem.

Collected white candles, books, and ornaments together make a statement when thoughtfully layered. If you have her books, you may already know Fifi O’Neill brings into service a faux fireplace for architectural interest and warmth.

Check online Marketplaces for vintage fireplace surrounds, mantels, and even electric fireplaces (whether they are working or not). It may actually be an advantage if the unit isn’t in working order since it is probably priced lower, may be lighter to move, and may be a cinch to modify.
By now you know I’m cuckoo for cloud-like poufs typically reserved for wedding showers and receptions. For me, they say “time to party” in any season.

Even white roses in a simple vase or an old crock impart sweet serenity when not swallowed up by a cluttered vignette or a sea of saturated color.
It’s more than okay for holidays to whisper.

Oh, the magic of vintage little sheep at Christmastime! I never tire of them!

Crushing on Low Contrast
If you’re in the color pop camp, a pale look may seem lacking. On the other hand if you’re into: expansive, breezy, and atmospheric? Layer on tones of alabaster, putty, snow, stone, and linen.

YES, VIRGINIA, TEXTURE CAN TRULY BE YOUR COLOR.
When you’re aiming for tranquility, muted colors and restraint can tonally be your best friends (see what I did there?).

Whites need not match.

Thrift for vintage items such as ironstone and accessories with pale hues that don’t necessarily scream “holidays” to incorporate at Christmastime.

Ideas for Decorative Objects
Take a cue from MyPetiteMaison and collect white the whole year through.

Poinsettia is but one option; pale and lovely garden roses set a softer romantic mood.
As you may know, antique French baskets are pricey. If you see one at a friendly price, snap it up!

Grace Rose Farm is a favorite source for charming, old fashioned, fresh roses from California. My rose bouquets purchased from the farm are a sweet indulgence that transform rooms and moods.

Petite Tree + Aged White Urn
In a culture where bigger is touted as better, plentiful exceptions remain.

Diminutive trees in decorative urns. Little white ceramic houses and churches with steeples are sweet but not too flippin sweet.
Soften a cool toned room by varying the shapes of objects and furnishings. Notice all of the curves in this single corner:

Here’s another shot of that corner, and WOW, you get a sense of how even pale colors take on importance in the sea of snowy white.

Why leave the top of a cabinet bare when more gentle white can elevate the look?

I love when a vignette feels authentic, undone, and maybe even a bit incomplete. We don’t want to try to hard since that look can feel contrived and flat.

Little pre-lit bare birch trees are so perfect for this spare look:
Romantic White Simplicity Beyond the Holidays

What could be simpler than saved jam jars?

Could a French Nordic-inspired, humble look in the kitchen be as simple as frosted white sugar cookies on a pedestal with a few mercury glass votive holders?
Serenely Quiet White Christmas Mood
White or mostly white interiors are cold and sterile? Mmmmm, golden sunlight warms it naturally.
A wreath in the window need not be a lush evergreen with bold red ribbon…notice the effect of a wispy hoop (above).

Are antiqued brass and gold tones white’s best friend?
I grew up in a house where our Christmas tree was the most beautifully decorated one in the land. My Swedish-loving mother used candle light strings to great effect.

Need encouragement that small rooms within closed floorplans can feel magical and not claustrophobic? White is a miracle worker.

Does the quiet reverence of all the white speak to you too?

I grew up with many Scandinavian traditions at Christmas including Santa Lucia and even candle spinners just like this.. Also enjoy the video where Northern Heart shares glimpses of holiday home hygge in Sweden.

The Perfect Hostess Gift?
I’m so happy this bar of lovely arrived for press so I could see what the fuss is all about! The Napa Valley in a bar of soap? A tall order for sure, but their Cabernet Soapignon is a berry scented bar with an intoxicating blend of cocoa butter, olive oil, and cold-pressed, Napa Valley grapeseed oil. A luxurious treat for hands and body you will want to gift yourself.

Don’t forget a soap lift (above) so your bar stays dry!
If you’re seeking something slightly artsy to keep your hands busy, how about one of these watercolor workbooks from Emily Lex? I can’t resist her Nutcracker collection!
