The basement in our first house where I did laundry was one of those creepy cobwebby dungeons you want to escape from as quickly as possible. Back then, I couldn’t imagine that someday I would have a room on the main level devoted to laundry without spiders or mice! Utility rooms are frequently overlooked design-wise, where we typically put our dollars toward living spaces. My favorite examples have natural light and are flex spaces. Colors affect us emotionally which is why I spend so much time on this blog exploring them. Let’s peek at Charming Mud Room Paint Colors for Laundry & Utility Rooms.
Charming Mud Room Paint Colors for Laundry & Utility Rooms
Moody Blue-Green Laundry Areas
Since 2020, green has only increased in popularity for interiors and exteriors. Signifying nature, growth, health, and wealth, it’s having a moment.
While I don’t know the exact colors in these custom spaces, I offer educated suggestions.
I just love the effect of green with terracotta! So complementary! Remember that the only way to arrive at the perfect tone for your unique lighting and context, you’ll need to sample at least three.
Even though the three may seem very similar at first, when they are side by side in your space, you’ll notice undertones and variations.
Here’s one of those flex spaces where a variety of different uses can happen in the space. I don’t know the exact green used here, but it reminds me of Gibraltar Cliffs 1587:
If you love a blue-green, sometimes they can even come off as neutrals:
Such an interesting combination with the cool greys!
Here’s a more muted pairing with more cool grey, but this time marble:
What a boon when we are supplied the exact color! I’m crazy bout this shade of atmospheric blue-grey-green:
Beautiful Blue Mudrooms & Laundry Rooms
Should blue be your favorite color, why not use it in a room you’ll frequent?
I’m not sure which shade of denim-like blue is in the laundry room with Dutch door above, but isn’t it a handsome space!?! That demi-table for folding, the vintage look tile on the floor, and the beautiful sink. Not to mention the view!
If you’re after a cheerful, bold, island-like blue…
Sarah Richardson makes a case for a coastal hue that feels slightly electric like Caribbean Mist:
Another possibility is Light Blue:
With its green and grey undertones, Sweet Bluette could sweeten a lackluster utility room:
Try to admire without the desire to acquire (ha!) this orangerie of a laundry space:
At least we can get the look of the window trim…
Does your dream laundry room sing with elegant French charm?
Because toile wallpaper and a bold French blue may point you in a dreamy direction.
Navy blue has a classic charm all its own. It is handsome across design styles from coastal to modern to vintage.
Remember it is tricky to judge these paint color swatches online. They are approximations and may appear different in your space from what you see in an image. However, they provide a starting point. You’ll begin to see whether you like a less saturated version or which undertones don’t work for your eyes.
Pale Neutral Color Stories
It’s the color story to which I turn most often because I don’t tire of it. It feels clean and fresh in every season. Best of all, it makes a cramped space live larger.
Here’s an idea to get the look of the above space and the ones below the swatch.
Isn’t this sink beyond charming?
Yes, please, if ever I need linens to serve a dozen bedroom suites…
For a bit more taupe and warmth, here’s a paint color designers love:
This gorgeous space has cabinets reminiscent of Pale Oak:
This more rustic space has tones of driftwood and limestone:
What an organized, tidy, clean-lined wee utility space with a similar color story:
Consider the Rainbow of Greys & Greige
As I mentioned before, a pale color story is always what I gravitate toward, and I’m never mad at the range of grays to consider. Whether they’re muddy like this:
Goodness gracious, add a ladder to my #laundryroomgoals list with the Dutch door!
or cooler slate examples…
Psst. Natural light is going to warm the paint color so if your space lacks a window, you may have to sample slightly lighter versions of this.
Pale greys can be beautiful for creating an ethereal mood. I love Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray for a dreamy feel.
While this swatch of Repose Gray may appear drab and stone colored, it actually reads blue-grey in my own space. Sample!
Here’s how Repose Gray looks in my own home:
For a lovely pastel blue-grey that feels fresh and French-y, consider Blue Porcelain.
Again, we see Chicago brick on the floor; a striking contrast with the painted cabinets which have a green undertone. The exact wall color here is Sherwin-Williams Alabaster.
Mediterranean & European Greens
Here are a few inspiring paint colors which are less commonly used in the USA.
There’s an Old World feel about them, and I imagine them in a Spanish farmhouse, an Italian countryside home, or an English country space.
I thought this was a bold move to use the deep green on the walls AND cupboards.
And isn’t the rustic wood countertop material brilliant with the green?
We can’t ever forget our favorite use of Green Smoke:

Sophisticated & Timeless Laundry Transformation
I love me some Jennifer Lincoln-Cutler French-inspired design magic. See what she did with a storage room:
Savvy design cues to glean from French Nest-y wisdom:
- Hide the washer and dryer behind custom cabinets.
- Skip the requisite big box store countertop & spring for a beautiful wood work table.
- Take your own sweet time to create a timeless environment that will remain relevant for decades.
- Ceilings are not to be forgotten!
If you’re building, be sure to be thoughtful about where washer and dryer hookups will go!

Resources for Utility Spaces
Love a pretty chandelier in a hardworking space to keep the space well lit? Me too.
Here’s a sink I have been crushing on for too many years to count. I think I first saw it in Annie Brahler’s (Eurotrash) unforgettable Illinois country kitchen:
These French inspired baskets are a bestseller on this blog, and they would be right at home in any number of rooms for a wide range of storage options:
I love it when something simple also looks smashing:
Don’t you love a beadboard drying rack?
I hope these ideas set you up for design success, friends!
Peace to you right where you are.

Hi Michelle,
I love this post. The dutch door and ladder in a laundry room is great. We spend so much time doing laundry, might as well be in a lovely space while doing it.
Thank you,
Sarah

Yes! Gets me thinking about even little things that we have always dreamed about and how they might show up in a mud room or laundry room design – a favorite color, open shelves, a farm sink, wallpaper, etc. It’s such a great space to try something new or unexpected.
All those ideas sound GORGEOUS! I love the unexpected surprise of it. It makes it fun, why not?!

Right? May as well be cheerful or bold or charming since it will be used almost everyday anyway! 🙂
