Whenever I post a topic with “French” and “Christmas,” I inevitably hear from Parisian followers. “But Michele, we don’t decorate for the holidays as Americans do!” And I appreciate the feedback. So to clarify, what we truly explore here are French-inspired sensibilities for holiday decorating schemes. That can mean pastel or light-toned color stories, rustic elegance, an understated chic look, or a natural look influenced by the South of France. Country French Inspired Christmas Decorating is (loosely translated) “those decorations and touches someone from the French countryside might choose for a romantic, country French Christmas were they keen on holiday decorating.”

Country French Inspired Christmas Decorating
Should it seem insanely premature to see wreaths and garlands, do visit my archives instead for something less seasonal. No need to get that holiday anxiety revved!
But waiting too close to the holidays to get crackalackin will cause stress too doncha know. Visitors to Pinterest wanted their holiday inspiration yesterday! Cray cray.
It’s always wise to have a decorating plan way ahead of the season since supply chain and stock issues are alive and well. I’m including the golden bells door hanger above even though it is coming soon because it is likely to sell out quickly.
What a great way to embellish almost any Christmas wreath. Gold bells and fresh (or even everlasting) greenery go together so well! They never go out of style.
Everyone loves these whether they are decorating Frenchie-style or not! Milagro heart boxes look lovely on a tray, on a tree, strung with ribbon on a gift, or even en masse in a crystal bowl. They speak to the holy side of the season, and I love displaying mine well past the holidays.
You can’t argue with decorations that will also work in the other seasons as well, yes? Bet you’ll love them even more in person – and I love bringing them outside on a covered porch.
Vintage inspired bottle brush trees always look sweet and nostalgic, and when they are in a natural color, they work well with Old World French country schemes.
A Subtle French-Inspired Welcome
I can never seem to decide on a doormat. Not because there aren’t lovely examples in the marketplace…just can’t decide! Meanwhile, muddy boots and paws are making little trails of prints through the hall these days! (My parents’ pets flew with them from AZ this visit and they are loving the lush green property!)
Do you love a real evergreen Christmas tree or do you prefer everlasting? My Belgium Fir artificial pre-lit tree from Nearly Natural is beautiful, and it’s probably my favorite thing since it’s lovely before you string a single ornament or bow.
Isn’t the font on this pillow’s message above close to perfection? If you have ever fancied giving handlettering a try, maybe this is the season to try it! Imagine how you could transform simple linen or burlap with a sharpie.
I shared these pretty plates last year, and since they’re still available, I think they are worth a look. A couple years back, I began collecting Lenox Holly china for use during the holidays. It always makes folks feel so special, and I love the gold rim. (It’s never too late to start collecting!)
Isn’t it always the humbly sweet little country touches and details? This Christmas Pocket or Pouch adorned simply with sprigs of greenery, branches, or berries is just precious.
Christmas Decorations Inspired by French Moments
Design details spied in France may give you fresh ideas as you put your own spin on Country French Christmas pretty!
1. Frenchy Rustic Christmas Star
Whether we make one with twigs from the yard or wire, isn’t this beautiful inspiration?
2. Star Themed Tablescapes for Christmas
What’s so darling about this idea is that you could easily stitch simple stars to an inexpensive runner, cloth, or fabric.
3. Pink in Lieu of Christmas Red
Pink is so often overlooked but oh so pretty and romantic. And with a sage green? Sigh!
4. Chanel in Paris
When we visited Paris, we stayed steps away from this Chanel (Park Hyatt Paris Vendome). Is that door knocker Christmas tree-shaped?
5. Bûche de Noël
This particular Christmas yule log cake below is a vegan dessert created with raspberry and grapefruit sorbet. What a lovely way to bring France to your table!
6. Unfussy Christmas Tree
Sarah Silm stays true to her relaxed style for holiday decoration in her small chateau in SW France. The family tree is decorated simply with ornaments made by the children and little bits of cheer collected over the years.
7. Buckets of Simplicity in Galvanized Pails
I love how the wreaths are hung so low!
No buckets (they ARE getting pricey!)? Baskets work too for rustic charm:
8. DA Bears or La Bears?
Sometimes scale is everything and a bag of le chips.
9. Collected Milagro Hearts
What a thoughtful collection to deck the halls at Christmas as well as the whole year through.
10. Fresh Evergreen Garland on a Headboard
The French are so good at wee little strokes that refuse to show off and are simply enough!
11. Ethereal Enchantment
When you love a romantic fantasy of a white Christmas…
Reach for yards of tulle.
And sprinkle it all with starlight.
12. Pretty Christmas Blue
I could stare at this inspiration all day.
And snow white painted floors too!
13. French Nordic Flavor
Aren’t tabletop trees the best? I think I prefer them to the big guys.
And the pennants are such a sweet touch that could be created with kids.
14. Just a Christmasy French Market Basket
Do we ever tire of ancient lovely doors weathered to perfection?
Realizing just now how those of you lucky enough to have green kitchens are set like forever for holiday decorating!!! And is olive green and copper an amazing color story for the holidays or what?
15. Pretty Sweets as Decor
This is my kind of holiday decorating…with cake.
And Christmas baguettes, s’il vous plait!
