It’s not shabby chic. And it’s beyond simply rustic modern. You’ll soon see how these soulful modern rustic interiors with texture have an inherent mystery. Restraint, minimalism, and edgy art seem to work best in sculpting them. And such restraint belongs to the color story as well…think natural, faded, muted, neutrals and black for contrast. Texture ensures everything is handsomely grounded and prevents straying into precious frou frou land. Let’s explore the beauty of understated, raw, more rugged textural spaces.
Soulful Modern Rustic Interiors With Texture

What springs to mind when “modern rustic” and “soulful design” unite in a design story?
Do you imagine a mountain cabin, a beachy retreat or a monastic all white villa?
My thoughts drift to the serene, traveled, and textural designs created by Michael Del Piero.
Black, white, creams, and neutrals lend drama yet don’t shout.
I haven’t yet learned to live harmoniously with black, but I try! My Fermob black bistro chairs were perfect in our former courtyard and are now on the front porch at the Georgian.
My STRIPE TURKISH TOWELS used as throws, tablecloths, and wraps add a more casual, traveled modern rustic tone to the chairs. (And here’s a friendlier priced alternative if you don’t need the European high quality of Fermob chairs: bistro set.)
To truly succeed with this rough luxe look, the art of restraint must be learned. While neutrals work magic, plenty of texture along with old objects add soul…but not too many objects!
Michael Del Piero’s Soulful Mix
This vignette above from 2016’s Hampton Design Showhouse reflects a breathtakingly dynamic and sensual painting by Francine Turk. Resting on the rustic wood console are African stone beads and curated treasures.
In the serene black and white bedroom within a Hamptons home, a simple wood console serves as a bedside table, holding a few essentials. Textures such as a billowy roman blind and a shaggy fur rug combine with the cool concrete flooring.
Similarly, in Michael Del Piero’s Chicago shop, texture becomes the breathtaking color:

I can only imagine how much lighter this space feels after painting the brick white.
Exposed rafters and ductwork provide even more texture for a deconstructed, edgy vibe.
And imagine how much soul and warmth this space would lack without the beams, warm wood flooring, and amazing artful light!
Del Piero’s travels are fruitful journeys since she brings so many exotic and ancient treasures home.
Even organic foliage arrangements can feel textural and exotic!

Who can resist handling everything on this table!?!

Rustic White Textural Inspiration from Atlanta Bartlett
Traveling across the pond, we’ll consider a different flavor of rough luxe. Here’s a rustic English country coastal cottage near Wynchelsea Beach and Rye.
The East Sussex property can be leased for holiday stays as well as photo shoots from The Beach Studios. Isn’t the lofty kitchen unique with its cloud white shell and crusty fixtures?
Not the traditional English country coastal cottage one might imagine, there’s a chicness about the pared down rustic style in this 1930s cottage. It was re-imagined to maximize the lovely light and to streamline daily living.
So much texture in one small space!
There’s a humility in this little seaside home which refuses to take itself overly serious.
And a sense that all of the texture we see was not added, but rather emerged when layers of flatness were removed.
A metaphor really.
Underneath the smooth facade lies an earthy richness with varied textures, with imperfection and wounds now free to bask in the light.
Is that why we respond to the beauty of layered textures?
Is there an honesty in the rawness of it that calls to our poor souls aching for the Real?
Who can say? 🙂
I don’t know anything at all.
But living out of this spirit of unknowing and mystery yields so much raw beauty.
And reminds me to stop clinging and striving for ideas of perfection.
Apparently, this is a lifelong sort of learning journey.

Pieces To Integrate or Ground a Soulfully Rustic Room
I can’t tell you how many times I have been asked about where to find a sofa just like this one…an unimposing wood base, a style that feels not too modern or traditional, and high quality to endure the stuff of life.
I personally can’t live without a rustic stool, preferably in every single room of my home. Who can say why? Well, my stature may explain it partially. They serve as texture, they offer a splendid perch for all matter of things, they provide help when something’s out of reach. I could continue!
Still Not Tired of This Table
Here’s a rustic sideboard cabinet with a weathered finish from the Kelly Clarkson’s Collection.
This rustic piece would mix well in a space with a black and white color scheme, and feel free to think beyond the dining room!
