I will try to give an update in a post – it is a very overwhelming time for our family. He was discharged this afternoon and is happy to recover at home at least for now. We are hoping he has turned the corner. Thanks so much for your concern and support.
You turned me onto deVOL …thank you!! They were my main inspiration for our kitchen when we were building our home. I got so many ideas from them as I poured over their lovely kitchen pictures, and now I thoroughly enjoy my kitchen everyday because of that inspiration! Pale palette, shaker style cabinets, varied textures, earthy touches, glass front cabinets mixed in, to name a few. Have just recently added a quirky touch with a green (in the same vein as the one in the last deVOL pic in your post) vintage, very weathered cupboard with torn screen fronts built in 1961 & I love that mix of authentically old with new. It’s the perfect added cozy touch & brings me so much joy every time I enter! Ha! So thanks again, Michele, for your glorious blog that introduced me to so many wonderful designs/designers including yourself. You basically were my interior designer from afar! 🤗❤️
Oh, you are such a light, Amy. Thank you for following along all these years and pouring out the love. deVOL is so amazing, and just when I thought I may be able to pay their NYC showroom a visit…pandemic woes. It’s still on my list. Even better is the thought of visiting their UK locations! I love what they do, their commitment to fine craftsmanship and their timeless aesthetic which never grows dull. I’m so happy to hear your kitchen is serving you well. Come visit your virtual designer anytime you’re in the area! xox

El uso del metal, dejando todo al descubierto y una gran cantidad de espacio para trabajar, hace que este espacio sea perfecto para el chef moderno, creando un diseño informal y atemporal. En otras palabras, el diseño de cocinas industriales nunca pasa de moda.
Maybe it’s just me having lived in a “rustic” German upstairs apartment many years ago, but having
raised a family of 3 kids, and 3 husbands, I prefer floors and walls and counters that look clean, smell clean and are clean after being washed.
Maybe no one cooks in their kitchen any more? But I do and even without using any oil, I still have a lot of clean up to do.
Such an important quality in our kitchens that I don’t write about nearly enough: does it feel clean? I think mistakes can be made with any design style along these lines. You can put brand new black granite counters in a new kitchen, and if you’re not good about getting after the crumbs, it can look and feel anything but clean. As for distressed or rustic surfaces perhaps feeling unclean to some folks, I wonder if it’s because the mix isn’t quite right? You certainly don’t want a time capsule of wear and tear. Even “clean” can be subjective. I recall a family member visiting me many years ago when I lived in a farmhouse, and he remarked: “my kitchen just doesn’t clean up as well as yours.” And I thought OH MERCY, THIS KITCHEN IS NOT SELF-CLEANING! It’s not cluttery so that is always great start. And there is no substitute for consistent clean up and re-ordering. It involves lots of daily chores. I hear you too about do people cook anymore? I cook/bake every single day. I can wear out an oven like nobody’s business! It’s not that I love being a slave in the kitchen. I do enjoy it, but eating out is terrible for my health, and I’d rather put my cash toward other things.

Yes, I agree with you….one just has to constantly clean in a kitchen that is used for
many meals a day. We also do not eat out often because of our health and restaurant food has too much salt, and oil, with very little in the way of healthy choices.
Clutter on a counter really does look messy and unclean, and so many of my friends stack all kinds of packages of food, opened and unopened, on their kitchen counters.
May you be well, may you be happy, and may you be free from suffering.
Hi Michele,
These are all gorgeous but that huge black steel Palladian window!!! Truly stunning. What an amazing room.

I knowwwwwww! I mean the quality of all the finishes and then the architecture!!! Thanks for reading, friend. Hope you are enjoying your summer!
They are all a touch rustic for my tastes. I like a classic design kitchen with lots of light, more than enough storage, and shiny countertops.
How is your son, Michele? On the road to recovery, I hope.
