Let’s now turn our attention to a much different design style.
Modern Houses by the Shore
Ever dreamed of living in a beach house on the ocean, in a getaway home on a lake, or a river retreat? This idea book features 35 modern houses which overlook the water and vary in size and style. (Except for some college years at Northwestern where I lived near Lake Michigan, I have mostly lived in landlocked areas far from the shore. So the notion is certainly a very romantic one indeed!)
With recently completed houses overlooking sea, lake, river and ocean, Houses by the Shore: At Home With the Water–River, Lake, Sea (Rizzoli, 2018) by Oscar Riera Ojeda and Byron Hawes, features diverse architecture and design by leading architects and interior designers.
The Flow From Inside to Outside
In the book, you’ll glimpse terraces and rooms flowing from indoors to out.
Imagine not just windows, but walls of glass and open floor plans flooded with natural light and unobstructed views of crashing waves or flowing currents.
Modern & Luxurious on the Water
Elegant and uncluttered, these houses serve as models for folks like me who may in fact live far from the waterfront yet who wish to capture something of that appeal and sensibility in their own space. After all, even if the view from your window does not include whales surfacing or the reflection of towering pines on a clear lake, there are always inspiring and architecturally wise design choices to glean which may help you better connect your interiors with nature.
Look at All the Glass!
A range of modern projects utilize stone, glass, wood, steel and concrete. Each house is photographed with detailed interior and exterior images, placed into context through the lens of widely respected editor, Oscar Riera Ojeda.
Intimate Architectural Moments
The text by Byron Hawes gives readers an informative look at the best of shore-side residential architecture.
Clearly, there is not one singular way to live beautifully by the sea!
What say ye? Let’s dream a little.
What would your ideal house by the shore look like?

The Grey house for sure – just so simple . Oh and the metal folding chairs …… a church staple!

YES! Definitely a church staple – always a little rust on those babies too. 🙂 We didn’t know we were shabby chic holy rollers!
A while back you did a book review for a somewhat unorthodox design book. Funky and fun. Thought I made a note when it would be released. Unfortunately I can find nothing. Can you help?
Best of luck at Amara . Waiting anxiously for the news!
