My Home June 2014: Simple White Studio

Welcome to my simple white studio which contains the family piano I have played all my life, a swing, and space where I paint.

The studio is just to the right of our entry
and because of the high ceilings, I love the acoustics.

I am rarely joined by anyone in the studio as it
is where I retreat to create and dream.

I painted the Ikea swing because those formerly red
plastic rings were just killing me.

The 87 piece is symbolic of the risk my sister and I
had of developing breast cancer before we opted
for preventative bilateral mastectomies.

The prints tacked to the framed canvases are by
Lovisa Burfitt.

I love working with black and white paint.
The other colors mysteriously make me nervous.
Feel free to shrink me all day long.

I paint in silence, and I am completely relaxed
and confident as I do so…it is only paint after all.
I’m a messy artist too, just covered from head to toe
because like a child, I get lost in the flow
and don’t worry a bit about the consequences.

This week I have spent a ton of time at the piano writing
some cool new stuff that I hope to record this summer.
I’m a horrible player, but I can sing and write.

Thanks for stopping by!
My studio is always welcome to artists
who need a tranquil getaway and soft light.

I have some wonderful hometown heroes to
share with you soon so stay tuned!

Peace to you right where you are.

What a beautiful, tranquil space, Michele! I'm so glad you have a retreat like this to be creative and let loose. The perfect place to let go and see what happens. I feel inspired just looking at it and wish I could stop by for a painting day. XOXO

you totally need to stop by for a painting day…charter a jet, lovely artist!

Oh its lovely. I always prefer open, empty, white spaces. My studio is getting too full but I have nowhere else to put everything! I live in a tiny cottage. I recently took all the paintings off of three of the walls and the bare white helps me breathe…and new creativity is able to flow. I mostly paint when no one else is home but I do like music…Pandora set on Bon Iver. 🙂 xxo Kerrie

i hear you about trying to keep a studio free of clutter. impossible! you should see my messy closets around the house stuffed with art supplies and pieces of lord knows what that i think i'll use someday! i actually need more silence than the average bear. so much noise in my head. 🙂

  4. June 5, 2014 / 5:32 pm

Oh… it's wonderful Michele. I so get that keeping it uncluttered keeps out distractions and opens up a space for creating. I had this room i painted in once, and had all these paintings stacked up, so i decided why not hang them all up on the wall. Well, that didn't last long, … all i would do is see all these paintings staring at me needing attention.
I love your lucite chairs, and the light in there is wonderful.

Your studio is perfect Michele and I love the swing. When I was a little girl, I jumped rope, skated, and spent lots of time at the park on those LONG swings. One of the spots I enjoyed the most was on the beach. Nothing like the tranquility of the ocean coupled with the feeling of being on a swing. As for painting, I wish I could get lost in that however I have no artistic ability and I'm just going to tell ya right now that if you were ask be to draw an horse it may look like a cross-breed of some sort;) Hope you are enjoying each day. xxL

    Hi Michele,
I am jealous, and not in a bad way but a good way of you 🙂
Oh how I would love to dance about, in a white tutu with the soft touch to the keys of your piano, while dipping my brush into paint and mysteriously letting what comes from within.
Michele, not shrinking you! because everyone has their reasons to what makes them unique, and you my dear are uniquely beautiful.
The swing? Do you have room to swing on it? Or is it just a piece of art for artful playful memories.
I am in love with your space, and how the room is able to have a voice, not one piece in its space has to compete with each other for attention.
I so wish we were neighbors so I can join in and dance, play, and create.

You have a studio to love!

    Xoxo

ha ha ha! i swing. i really do. sometimes for too long. it's just a childlike thing that helps me clear my head. i also invite guests to swing, and some are shy about it, but our son who is a manly 200 lbs swings too! it's funny several men have come into the space and said 'i feel like i need to spend time here because i'm full of anxiety.' i take that as a great compliment. and please move in next door so we can play! 🙂

Michele, It's the perfect studio, dream-like and whimsical! Love the swing. I can see where it's a great place to create……..no extra color or clutter!
    Have a great weekend!
