Feels like yesterday I was sampling blue-grey paint colors for the kitchen we renovated here at the Georgian. Even when your decision is firm about a blue kitchen, the challenge to land on a just right blue can feel wobbly. Make sure to study the array of GREY SWATCHES. There’s a fair chance it’s a grey or a color with grey in the name that will strike you as the perfect blue. But why distract yourself with more than a dozen paint color options? Undertones, child. Lighting. These affect your perception of the colors. Trust your fairie-on-the prairie-paint-godmother enough to sample at least three. These possibilities for a Blue Kitchen (along with gray!) may help.

De-Saturated Pavilion Gray in My Kitchen
Sometimes the color looks grey in photos, but at certain moments of the day they indeed read blue. I like this sort of thing, and you don’t want to be unpleasantly surprised should you not, so definitely SAMPLE FIRST like you have all the time in the world and watch the changes through the day.
The walls are painted Sherwin-Williams Eider White, and sometimes it can appear slightly blush-like. I love this. Let yourself be more confident and open and less concerned if someone visiting should ask IS THAT PINK ON THE WALLS with a tone.

“An elegant Old World blue that also works well in more contemporary spaces,” Van Courtland Blue feels sophisticated and is similar to Province Blue.
With a light reflectance value of 31.47, it is in that medium range. It plays nicely with these Benjamin Moore colors: Wedgewood Gray, Simply White, Milky Way, and Coronado Cream.

BM Kensington Blue 840
If you’re feeling a crisp coastal navy, maybe this is the classic you’re after. Benjamin Moore calls it “A classic navy blue that brings a sense of refinement to any space.”
Isn’t it curious how subway tile–the plain Jane super safe option–never truly looks the same across projects? I love how it adds character and age. It’s an underrated, friendly-priced, understated option you shouldn’t underestimate.
With its LRV of 11.97, it is a dark navy blue similar to Van Deusen Blue and Newburyport Blue.
Try this blue with Horizon, Mount Saint Anne, and Battenburg.
BEHR December Eve for a Blue Kitchen
I discovered another dark navy when as I tried to locate a dark blue reminiscent of a custom color from a deVOL kitchen. This Behr option is quite similar.

St. Giles Blue Farrow & Ball No. 280
What if you’re after a bold and vivid blue that lifts your spirits every time you walk into the kitchen?
Such a gorgeous vivid turquoise Farrow & Ball says is “inspired by a colour originally found in the hall at 17th century St Giles House in Wimborne St Giles, Dorset. Its striking blue hue cannot fail to make you smile and will hold its own even in the darkest of places, so is often used as an accent in the back of bookshelves.”
Which brings us to another CRAPTASTICALLY SMART idea for trying out a color before committing to it. Get a sample and paint something you can live with for awhile. A cast off side table, a picture frame, the back of a bookcase. Here’s a kitchen with vibrant blue whimsy that reminds me of this tone!
Can you imagine saying yes to a bold wallpaper AND a bold blue? Makes sense and is going to transform gloomy mornings without a doubt.
The question is, will you become bored quickly with the pattern and color? Because it would take me less than a week before I would neutralize it to restore a sense of calm. We’re all different. The NEED FOR EXCITEMENT is very real for certain brains and just as honorable as the alternative.

If you’re into a gorgeous gray-blue with its potential to evoke tranquil and breezy vibes, this easygoing hue may fit the bill.
So gorgeous! BM characterizes this versatile medium gray as “softened with attractive blue-green undertones.” You can definitely see the green on the cabinetry in this laundry area above. (And the tile is the very same one I chose in 2020 for our son’s bath renovation – divine.)
I perceive it as a gorgeous sky blue with the bonus of not feeling cloying. The LRV of 56.39 means it is going to reflect a lot of light back into the room (56.39%). If you were going for a slightly brighter sky shade, here’s a contender:
While I don’t know the precise blue in this kitchen below, it reminds me of Behr Sky Light.

Daring Enough for a Blue Ceiling?
There’s a certain irony here I love. It takes guts to paint your ceiling anything but white, and blue historically was used on ceilings to scare away bad spirits. So are we bold or anxious or both when we opt for it? I posted about haint blue ceilings HERE.
If you love sky blue yet find it too vivid, keep in mind you can always ask for a sample mixed at a reduced saturation (like 50%) for a more subdued version of the color. The only tricky thing about tweaking the saturation to land on a custom color is you want to be sure you can duplicate it for future touchups. Not a huge deal, but when you stick with the original formula, there’s less headache down the road. Here’s another example of a sky blue kitchen where we don’t know the exact color.
