Progress! Not a flashy reveal or completion because…tweaking. And mama takes her own sweet time. We are all spoiled for wicked fast before/after transformations and the perfectly styled reveal! But no crew or fairies here, and we truly believe it is our divine right to rest. Here’s where we’re at today in the Southwest at the snowbird home we’re customizing with almost no demo.

Snowbird Bedroom & Bath: Serene Shifts

Simple, Minimal, Ivory Bedroom With Black
We want simplicity and ease here at our snowbird bedroom retreat so it was really all about a comfy bed and soft neutrals in here.

We found the bed, nightstands, and console table locally and brought the slipcovered barrel chair and floor mirror from our home in Illinois.

I initially thought these new beige stools (above) would work at the breakfast bar, but they are better in here.

The rug is also new, and we went with the small size to decide whether we like the pattern enough to order a room-sized area rug. Again, we’re not thinking about layering a bunch of design elements to make it insta-worthy as much as keeping it spare and easy to clean.

Same goes for the art work. Time will tell whether we will keep this painting above the bed in this place. The colors are subtle and pretty, but I would rather hunt for a vintage mirror from Italy.

I brought some of my own original abstract paintings from home with the black and white theme in mind.

I went through a phase where I painted lots of nightscapes and cosmic landscapes.

My mom has a collection of gorgeous white coverlets and quilts, and this one may be the one we will use – still more to audition…hahaha. Here’s how the bedroom looked when we toured the home:

The paint color is Sherwin-Williams Natural Choice, for just about everything on walls, trim, and doors.
Little Changes, Big Impact for Our Bath
I like simple and pared down, but this bath? We’re talkin’ plain and subpar with zero interest. What it offered? Space and light.

There’s a vanity area, a private WC, shower, and walk-in closet.

The first upgrade: faucets – an easy swap for a more modern look.

Then we painted the vanity and walls Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray. This is the same greige in our bedrooms and family room at the Georgian.

The cabinets didn’t have hardware so I opted for these 3.75″ lucite with chrome pulls. I like them because they aren’t too glammy but definitely add femininity. We could have just chosen art for the expanse of walls (below) reflected in the mirror, but I needed to give them more love than that. See how plain:

Love they shall get!

We added chair rail with a custom wallpaper mural (Beauty Everywhere from Photowall Sweden) above it. Everyone freaks thinking about putting up wallpaper…

But it’s come a long way! This product is from Photowall Sweden and goes up vertically with panels.

My husband smoothed the panels perfectly, and the whole DIY took 90 minutes. (For this wallpaper, you apply paste to the walls first, then you smooth out the paper.)

Living With Outdated Tile
I considered painting the floor and thought a checkered pattern could be cute.

But I’m not quite ready to experiment. Then we seriously considered demoing all of the beige ceramic tiles on the floor, but it would have been a huge messy undertaking. Instead, luxe feeling rugs are soft underfoot, and it has all but disappeared.

The rug’s pattern has blue which works well with the painted vanity which turns pale blue-gray when the southern sunlight bathes it.

Even though the shower has a decent glass door, I added a white waffle shower curtain for privacy and softness.

It may seem counterintuitive to break up a busy bathroom design with wallpaper and molding, but in this case, it did wonders. Sometimes the trick is subtraction to get rid of all of the fuss, and sometimes layering is the answer.

Marble would be my first choice, but we’ll live with the existing solid surface. The marble vanity trays to corral stuff are the next best thing to stone counters.
DIY New Flooring for Closet
Can you imagine these pretty upgrades paired with awful brown carpet underfoot in the adjacent walk-in closet? This pretty waterproof wood lookalike from Home Depot is dreamy thanks to my husband’s muscles and carpentry skills.

Just after I snapped these photos today, a dresser arrived for the closet so I can finally have more than those two little drawers! I love the high ceilings in here and how the window in the shower brings in southern light.

Believe it or not, I left the walls in the shower area and closet SW Natural Choice even though the vanity section is Agreeable Gray. I like the very subtle contrast. You can see in this next image how the inside of the doorway is ivory contrasting with the gray.

Another Idea for Adding a Natural Material
These natural marble candle holders look great everywhere and surprised me. Heavy, inexpensive, and they make a lovely gift.
Flooring We Added to Closet
Here’s another budget-friendly way to customize your space if you have DIY skills. This waterproof flooring material resembles white oak:
