The holiday decorating here was kept so utterly simple this year that it isn’t worthy of joining the decked halls on your social feeds. I’ll share snaps of Christmas joy captured here a little later, and do see the video below I made with glimpses from past holidays. Last year found me dusting off a glue gun and crafting with paper bags. This simple paper snowflake garland of 20 staircase snowflakes was the answer to how to address an over the top, imposing staircase. SNOWFLAKES guaranteeing a white Christmas is hard to beat! they don’t scream holidays as much as winter wonder. Let’s revisit this easy DIY.

But First: Peek Inside My Holiday Home
DIY Paper Snowflakes
If you are able to layer 7 lunch bags, cut 6 straight lines, and squeeze white glue in a T-shape, you are golden for this easy craft you may remember from your childhood.
What I imagined for the stairs (totally ignored them last year) was something poetic. A fanciful white paper garland with roses and leaves for a serpentine, billowy, ethereal look.
I love the look of fresh greens but not their maintenance and mess.
These prommy stairs will someday feel more like home when we add finishing millwork to the center wall at the top. But for now? Should we fight them? Ballard Designs once offered a gorgeous paper floral garland I should have bought. I have watched tutorials for large watercolor paper flowers and loved the idea of those too.
However, when I measured the amount of garland required, it was clear the crafting should have commenced in July! I’m hopeless about planning well in advance influencer-ready, seasonal decor. As an intuitive sort of decorator, I must first feel the season.
If you also have a large expanse, and you’re aiming for low cost, paper snowflakes fit the bill.
I independently selected products in this post—if you buy from one of my links, I may earn a commission.
Wanna make one? They are just as pretty after Christmas or for a New Year’s party!
You’ll require white paper lunch bags, scissors, white glue, and paper clips.
I needed 20 snowflakes and kept things super chill (get it?) and uniform so I could cut just one template to use for them all.
To attach snowflakes to the handrail, I made ribbons of white cotton from recycled white pajamas.
Ahhhh, the obligatory photo of me in PJs. With chronic illness, they are a uniform, and I have long ditched any apologies for it.
Rest is important to health and is my right, kittens, so I shall defiantly and triumphantly wear pajamas to shreds before they become Christmas ribbon.
7 lunch bags + template as shown for a guide.
Stack and cut them all at once. Glue goes where green dots are.
Glue one at a time…then open for the MAGIC, kittycats.
A paper clip holds it together (can store flat for next year).
These snowflakes and ribbon ties can be used next year too if desired since they will store easily thanks to using paper clips and not glue. Here’s an idea for snowflake medallions using this tutorial should you need a smaller garland.
Do you love pinecone garlands? I threw this one on my antique console in the foyer for an unfussy look.
This doorway into the music room would be perfect for greenery against the mural. I wasn’t afraid to just go for it with mural wallpaper panels after we built the walls in the foyer because I had lived with it in our former home and knew it was neutral enough to not become a bore.
I have yet to do anything dramatic decor-wise to the porch, and even though I have lots of fairy light strings I could bring to it, I love lighting real candles and placing them in the windows and on the porch tables.
There’s so much pressure as a blogger to create pin-worthy holiday vignettes, but I am only willing to comply when my heart is in the labor; when my energies align with the efforts required.
If you’re still with me, thank you. The simplicity of a paper snowflake DIY? Is it 2010? The bar is so much higher these days.
Thank you for showing up here with tenderness and love. If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, it’s one six dollar snowflake garland away…
Merry Christmas, lovely friends.
P.S. Also check out how Annie at Most Lovely Things decorated her windows with brown paper bag snowflakes.
Peace to you right where you are.
