I thought about hopping on the bandwagon for one of those “expect to see these interior trends in 2024” posts. Then I remembered: (1) I mostly lack credentials for the topic. (I didn’t attend a furniture market this year so can’t say what’s in the hopper, though I have a hunch it won’t be boucle or as many curvy sofas.) (2) How can anyone in the world confidently assert what 2024 holds? and (3) Most followers here aren’t interested in trends. Instead, let’s be energized by the fresh new year’s promise and potential for sanctuary-like interiors and luxuriously cozy moves that enhance daily living.
Ideas for Sanctuary-like Interiors in 2024
When I think of my favorite European country inspired interiors, what they usually have in common is a cozy luxe mood and a sanctuary-like quality. It’s what I try to create in my own home, and it often has little to do with expensive purchases or too much fuss.
Cozy for me means mixing in vintage items, paying attention to lighting, and integrating what spells comfort for me.
Love Scandinavian Style?
What I love about “sanctuary-like” interiors is how they aren’t one note, strictly traditional, or necessarily minimalist. Sometimes the look is influenced by Scandinavian sensibilities and lifestyle. Here’s a peek around a peaceful home:
But sometimes sanctuary-like is about balance and blending old with the new.
Romantic Nostalgic Interiors That Aren’t Too Sweet
If you have seen the work of Heidi Caillier you may have noticed how her modern vintage look is also peaceful and zen-like. Do you crave warmth and patina for your interiors? The designer’s own home reflects them both so beautifully, and she eloquently describes her process here:
Cozy Luxe Little Paris Apartment
Even though this small light and bright Paris apartment with modern touches appears nothing like the Tacoma home above, it also exudes calm cozy luxe. (It also challenges the notion a kitchen must be spacious to live calmly and large.)
Clearly there isn’t a singular path to a peaceful look! And I hope that is a comfort to you. But where to begin if you hope to welcome more calm to your 2024?

Hello Lovely Follower Favs
I actually DO have data which reflects what followers are currently leaning into. My engagement on Pinterest suggests SANCTUARY, NATURAL and CALM looks are what others are hungry for.
The AI generated rendering above captured the imagination of many FB and Pinterest followers with its rich patina, warmth, lofty rustic elegance, and luxurious finishes. The color palette is quite constrained, but the addition of plants and scenic beauty beyond the windows somehow brings it to life.
This breathtaking bath (above) from The French Nest Co invites us into a spa-like sanctuary with texture von texture glory.
A color palette of natural colors, cool with warm seems to ignite the most attention from readers here. Photography from a beachy shoot by Johnny Abegg for SPELL more than a decade ago still inspires.
Does it even get more serene and peaceful yet earthy and organic than this?
Here are a few offerings from SPELL. Even if you have reached a certain age, their agelessly iconic and sustainably made pieces are sure to please.
Minimal or Maximal?
Will we see more minimal or maximal designs trending in 2024?
Engagement on my channels would seem to suggest folks are leaning away from the extremes to be closer to the middle.
Not minimal, but certainly not overly fussy or messy.
Organized curated collections of treasures, memories, and moods seem to resonate.

Will “Old Money” and Bougie Cozy Be the Rage?
No matter what you call it, social media feeds continue to flood with images of cozy rooms with high quality, expensive finishes and furnishings.
Now that AI images of interiors are getting better, I expect the trend to explode.
What I am seeing shift increasingly is an appetite for more warmth and texture. For several years, a lot of people were asking their designers for crisp cool white walls and black accents. It’s what I was feeling in our former home:
Now, it seems there’s an interest in antiqued metals, distressed wood, and earthenware.
Which Sanctuary Style & Cozy Comforts Never Fall From Favor?
You can hardly go wrong when you stick with well made, sustainably sourced, high quality natural textiles for home.
They’re just going to age well and become favorites. And there’s nothing like a quality candle to add a relaxing fragrance. Glass jar candles are a favorite!
Even when the candle is gone, you can enjoy the beautiful glass jar by using it for a handmade candle (do you do this as I do?) or for storing any number of things (makeup brushes, jewelry, etc.).
While this solid white oak (and made in the USA!) desk costs more than I can afford, this image captures a pared-down, natural, organic look I’m always after:
An oak branch on an oak sideboard on white oak hardwood flooring is about organic as I get!
You’ll find all sorts of inspiration you never even knew you needed in books by Jenni Kayne:
Houseplants & Indoor Gardens are Timeless
For years now, indoor gardens tend to be the at the top of any wellbeing interior trend, and they only seem to grow more popular.
We keep seeing new businesses pop up everywhere that specialize in providing and caring for plants in offices and workplaces.
No idea how my plants thrive as they do since I have never been good with the. While plants in the house are suggestive of clean, fresh air, they don’t actually clear toxins from the air (true!). But they do uplift spirits.
Is GREEN Still Trending for Interiors?
It sure seems like it. I’m sure you are seeing it across your feeds, and as AD noted…
“…shades like emerald bring a sense of tranquility and rejuvenation into any space, whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, or office. (It’s part of that ongoing process of reconnecting with nature.)”
Reconnecting with nature also means the demand for more sustainability is going strong. We are all ditching plastic and welcoming natural, non-toxic materials that are not manmade.
If you’re into a serene kinda green, you’ll definitely want to peek at THIS too!
Moody greens have been everywhere lately.
Is Modern Farmhouse Style Out?
When earth shut down in 2020, a whole lot of people began working remotely from home and many moved at least temporarily, to more rural environments.
Style-maker and designer Leanne Ford left LA for country living in Pennsylvania and said this about how her collection with Crate & Barrel was born:
“…it seems like everyone either moved to the country or wanted to. I fell for this look that
feels dusty, rusty and a little glam.”
Psst. In case you haven’t yet peeked at her laid back approach to decorating a Sears house in the country (with second floor ceilings so low, she couldn’t even stand up, see the tour here:
My sense is that too many folks have already committed to farmhouse and modern farmhouse style and aren’t ditching it completely. The thing about the aesthetic is with all of the neutrals (white sofas, white shiplap, wood coffee tables, rustic bar stools), they can work within a range of diverse design styles. Maybe white walls will be painted a warm putty or sage color.
When you add antiques and vintage (scored locally quite easily from online marketplaces these days) to the modern farmhouse mix, it’s not too difficult to give it a fresh personality. Here are some items that were trending a year ago…are they out yet?
