Beauty Over 50: Finds for Aging Skin & Easy Makeup
Over 50 Beauty: Skin Care & More
Are you over 50?
Thoughts on Aging Skin
We can all benefit from checking our emotional response to the word ‘aging.’
After all, from the moment we are born, all of our organs (including our skin) begin aging. Ya know? Infants age. 16-year-olds are aging too.
Aging isn’t some sudden sorrowful decline after age 35; it’s a process our whole lives through.
In Search of a Simpler Skincare Routine
My aging skin needs all the help it can get, and I don’t know if you use retinol, but there are tons of choices. For years, I have stuck with Skinceuticals 1.0 Retinol (a STRONG formula with 1.0…so go easy, child!) because it is powerful and does every dang thing it says it will. How many products these days deliver like that?
As for cleansing and moisture, have you seen those Vogue youTubes with a celebrity showing you the 75 products and steps in her nightly routine?
Oy.
If fewer steps appeal, you might prefer mine:
Here’s Why I Love These Skin Care & Makeup Finds
These products above are what I have used in 2021 and are on my vanity this very moment. Morning and night, I use Ogee’s Liquid Gold cleansing oil, and I had no idea what I was missing before discovering it. Then I use a single pump of the serum before patting Ogee’s Jojoba Glow into my skin. If my sensitive skin happens to be inflamed with rosacea, I massage a few drops of the organic rosehip seed oil to calm it.
What is different about the makeup from Ogee? The clean, good for my skin ingredients and how they nourish my especially sensitive skin type. If you love a sheer, nourishing lipstick, you have to try the tinted lip oil above! I even wear it to bed. Back in the 80s, I remember applying three colors to my eyes, but I have no time or patience for that. So Glossier’s Lidstar is the perfect product for people who want a quick, one and done, stays glowy and gorgeous all day look. It dries down quickly, stays put, and then comes off easily with the cleansing balm by Good Molecules which I adore for removing all my makeup at night.
The last product on the essentials list above? Laura Geller’s baked bronzer never looks orangey or fake. Mineral makeup is a modern miracle if you ask me…all these tiny lovely particles to blur imperfect skin like mine. Kind of like a built-in filter for aging, sun-damaged faces.
Fashion for Folks Over 50 Who Care About How Stuff is Made
I am someone who likes comfy loungewear and who is becoming more mindful about organic and sustainability so J. Crew’s Reimagined Shop is all kinds of of wonderful. Here’s the gist of it:
J. Crew is re-imagining their fabrics and processes—from using organically grown cotton to
partnering with mills and factories that are environmentally responsible and Fair Trade
Certified™.
They are partnering so things are better for the planet and for the people who produce them.
For Times I’m Not in the Mood to Broadcast My Gobbly Gobbly Neck
Oh, LE GOBBLE factor! Shhhhhhh. I remember being a young girl who noticed her mama’s aging neck and thought “Oh, how unfortunate…” never suspecting I would be a proud owner in the blink of a turkey’s eye.
While I’m not embarrassed about my age or how much I look it, the right pieces do help direct attention to our strengths, and J. Crew’s tissue turtlenecks do that for me. “Tissue” means they feel like the softest t-shirt and can be layered easily. I have a stack of ’em, and the stripey ones are my favs.
If you want to subtract at least 10 years from your age, layer this over a fun tissue turtleneck, wear a ponytail and bronzer, and get yer Katherine Hepburn low-key ON like Donkey Kong…
But wait, Michele. We hear you that you like your loosey goose neck skin covered as well as a youthful Katherine Hepburn pony, but what about face coverings?
Oh. My.
It is the 2020s.
But our “over 50” eyes.
We can leave the windows to our souls alone, yes?
I mean…
Y’all are not making this easy.
All Hail to the Black Legging
When you prefer organic cotton and fair trade certified:
When you’re serious about smoothing and extra support…
In case you’re curious about superior stretch Lycra power and a high but not too high waist (I am…so these are in my closet…)
Socks I Wear Every Single Day in Winter
Welly boot socks are my best friends in winter, and I wear them over bare feet around the house. If I have to step outside (it’s pouring out there as I type this), I step into Ilse Jacobsen lace up rain boots (I prefer the shorter styles to the tall).
Coach Crossbodies
I finally replaced my crossbody bag since I completely wore down the leather trim on my prior Coach flight back. But I’m very attached to Coach and the style and have not grown a bit sick of it.
Day and Night Pajamawear
If you have been hangin’ out on this blog for any length of time then you know I’m a pajamanista. This style is still my reigning favorite:
Shower as Spa Retreat
I discovered Tocca’s Cleopatra body wash years ago at the Elysian Spa in Chicago. It was not only in the luxurious showers but was also used as hand soap at every sink. The grapefruit and cucumber combination is completely irresistible, and who knew handwashing could feel this luxurious?
Over 50 Daily Gentle Rhythms: Hair
Luscious Shampoo & Conditioner
AVEDA’s Cherry Almond Line
If you have used AVEDA since the ’80s like me, then you may remember the yum of their cherry almond line which has been brought back! All the AVEDA shampoos smell incredible. but each is formulated for different hair types. I’m also gaga for the fragrance of the Shampure line which was recently reformulated to be more hydrating.
Cherry Almond products are so delicious, I’m craving something yummy and sweet!
Over 50 hair and chemically processed hair can be fragile and require extra TLC. Here is a leave-in treatment I use for dry ends prone to split. Organic bergamot, mandarin, ylang ylang and more plant essences impart their pure loveliness.
Over 50 Daily Gentle Rhythms: Makeup
Finds I LOVE from Glossier
My brows are disappearing, and I’m still contemplating microblading (like a temporary tattoo that lasts about a year) like my sis. Until then, I’m using Boy Brow which is sort of like mascara for yer brows:
I also picked up this eye color (in “Slip”) after seeing it on a favorite vlogger and reading reviews from fans over 50, and now I want to try the other colors:
My favorite lipstick is still the moisturizing nourishmint line HERE from AVEDA, and they finally came out with a gloss too. Have a favorite lip gloss?
Gamechanging Favorite Foundations, Blush & Mascara
It remains the cat’s pajamas. I can’t say enough good things. And it’s perfect for over 50 skin since it is both hydrating and luxurious yet water light.
You won’t look airbrushed, child. Your skin will look like skin…but evened out skin that got lots of beauty sleep and a facial.
Westman Atelier Clean Makeup
After years of wearing full coverage foundation, I’m now feelin great about light to medium coverage where you see freckles and “character.” I find watching makeup artist Gucci Westman apply makeup très relaxant (you can keep your Netflix, sweet cheeks, but don’t take away my makeup freaky youtubers). She approaches makeup like an artist not trying to transform but rather reveal beauty.
I still need to to try her LIT UP Highlighter! And if you’re serious about investing in good-for-the-skin products that multitask, this one is concealer AND foundation:
Psst…what’s awesome about buying Westman Atelier from Credo Beauty is they accept returns so if you choose the wrong shade, they’re cool with it.
Cream blushes work so well for over 50 skin, and these below can double as lip color:
I wear this cheek and lip color (in shade Werk) from MILK, and it’s very sheer and looks equally good on my eyelids which surprises me. I think pinks are tricky to wear on the eyes, but this makes mine look healthier.
If you love the clean makeup line Ilia, you may also be interested in this kit at a great price.
This Pro SHOWS Us Exactly How We Apply Makeup the Wrong Way
So helpful, and I learned so much about how to correct my color application!
Another helpful makeup tip gleaned; I have been using too dark of a shade on my light brows…didn’t even know a shade like grey (which I need for its light ashy-ness) existed.
Health Update
While I haven’t had my follow-up appointment yet, I am anticipating receiving a diagnosis of SLE/Lupus. Test results and the patterns are pointing to it. I suspect I’ll be referred to a rheumatologist.
It is overwhelming to overthink the implications so I am coping by being grateful to have more information. I’m one of those people who would rather know everything and deal. Lupus has maybe been attacking my pancreas which would explain the problems digesting fat. It would also explain the hand/feet problems with Raynaud’s as well as my facial rash.
Thanks so much for keeping me in your prayers. It means so much that there are virtual strangers (although I never see you that way!) willing to intercede.
I believe it matters and have something concrete to point to with gratitude: I have not had a foot dystonia episode in a couple weeks!!!!! Friends! They are the most painful spasms I have ever had…while shorter than the pancreatitis attacks, they are hell on earth.
So I am both astonished and thrilled to go for a period of time with relief from them. Thank you, Lord!
Around the House
Since I can wiggle my toes again and stretch more without fear, I’m moving around more and getting a little exercise from housework.
I was able to hang a wreath on the front door, and the tree is up. I tire easily and a little coffee in the morning helps.
Lessons in Love
Our son’s rescue kitty (Snoopy) who is blind and deaf has had several injuries. His little life is teaching me more about higher love; about what it means to watch over something so innocent and prone to stumbling.
I’m thinking of you during a holiday season where bad news seems to be in steady supply. While we all want to remain hopeful and optimistic, surely we are more aware than ever how delicate life is. Will our family members be alive next Christmas?
We need not feel powerless when we can PRAY.
Some moments I have my head on straight and can glimpse the true meaning of the season which transcends any historical pandemic or tornado.
Outside, it was a gorgeous sunny day after the relentless storms. The landscape beyond my window even resembles a gorgeous Monet. I’m reminded of how we must often squint to see gentle abstraction and less jagged edges when we glimpse the harsh realities of modern life.
And sometimes we need a little help from a friend who can see the abstraction. Who can point us to hidden wholeness. If ever you long for such an eye, don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know. I’m honored to listen.

What an appropriate quote for today. I had to calm myself in grocery store yesterday because all the aisles are rearranged, but mostly because some products which were on my list and I have bought for years are now Gone. The store eliminates items which are , who knows, Perhaps not good sellers for all the new products.
So, I have to go to several different stores in a month to get my favorites.
This is worse than road rage for me.
Author
YES! I too have to now go to 3 different stores to buy what I used to buy at one. There’s a certain bread I need, and the last time I shopped for it, I think I put 50 miles on my car! I guess it’s time to cross over and try online grocery shopping? The rearranging is all about keeping us in the store longer so we buy things we didn’t intend to buy. The bread aisle is so hidden in the grocery store closest to our house and keeps moving around the store that we almost need a private Facebook group with maps and updates. Mercy! 🙂
SO TRUE THERE ARE SOMETHINGS MONEY CAN NOT BUY, AND MONEY CAN NOT BUY OUR SOULS THAT BELONG TO JESUS CHRIST. OUR SOULS ARE PRICE LESS AND SHOULD NOT BE MISUSED BY ANYONE. THE ONLY REASON THAT OUR SOULS ARE PRICE LESS, HIS BECAUSE HE THE SON OF YAHVEH AND MAN, HAS DIED AND RISEN FOR OUR SOULS. DO NOT STAY DEPRESSED FOR HE SHALL SOON RETURN, AS BIBLE PROPHECY KEEPS COMING TO PASS.
Beautifully said.

Dear Hello Lovely,
I am one of your avid followers and enjoy your posts often. You have the sweetest approach to life and I appreciate your uplifting comments. Below, you will find some information that I thought you might use when seeing you recommend CBD products. A friend of mine was recommended to start taking a CBD product by a practicing physician and friend, and as a result she began having psychotic nightmares. She did cut her dosage in half and the frightening dreams did go away. This doctor assured my friend that this CBD company was very reliable. Please consider having these CBD products that you are recommending on your website tested by a forensic lab for the safety of all your loyal followers like me. People need to know that they may or may not be able to pass a drug test or even worse, be held liable for a DUI after using these CBD products.
CBD
Use of cannabidiol (CBD), a compound found in cannabis, has recently become more popular due to its perceived therapeutic properties and lack of intoxicating or addictive effects. Although CBD is being touted as a treatment for a wide variety of conditions, there is not sufficient research to confirm its efficacy in treating most of these conditions (VanDolah, Bauer, & Mauck, 2019). Oversight of the recent proliferation of CBD products is lacking. Of 86 CBD products tested in one study, 26% contained less CBD than stated on the label and 21% contained THC, a compound not mentioned on the label (Bonn-Miller et al., 2017).
Cannabis plants containing low levels of THC, called hemp. The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 removes hemp from the Controlled Substances Act and allows farmers to grow hemp commercially under state or federal license.
• Legal in all States (CBD or low THC only (.3%).
• Legal use for the purest form of CBD & FDA approved (2018) is called Epidiolex, which can be prescribed by a board certified physician and picked up at your local pharmacy.
• Epidiolex is the only FDA-approved drug with CBD as the active ingredient.
• FDA has not approved the use of CBD in “medical” products, dietary supplements, or food products.
THC is fat soluble. It can stay in the fatty tissue for long periods of time (days or even wks.). THC is not water soluble like alcohol which is processed through your body rather quickly.
The cannabis plant originated in central Asia but has since spread to other tropical and temperate regions. The most well-known cannabinoids are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), but cannabis contains over 500 compounds, including cannabinoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and others (Gonҫalves et al., 2019).
THC is responsible for most of the plant’s psychotropic effects (Klumpers & Thacker, 2019). Usually, but not always, plants that produce a high amount of THC cannot also produce a high amount of CBD (Murray, Quigley, Quattrone, Englund, & Di Forti, 2016).

Thanks for this info!
All I can say is AMEN Sister. I struggle to maintain health. I truly try. On the good days it is like I am manic, hurrying about to take advantage of the time, moment by moment. I have been struggling with digestive issues now for a couple of years. Many tests, but no diagnosis. I have flare ups. It can be so daunting and depressing. Some days you wonder if it will ever get better. I’m a little person too and have always struggled to maintain weight. Today may be a better day so I am feeling thankful. I appreciate you sharing your life and struggles. Prayers for you to be well my friend. Today in Memphis it is sunny and mild. Beautiful, God blessed day.
Author
And now it’s my turn to say AMEN and thank you for sharing a bit of your story and helping me feel less alone. Like you, I struggle to enjoy the good days because yes, that is when I try to cross things off the list. I’m so glad it is mild in Memphis – that helps so much, and I look forward to one day leaving winter behind. 🙂 Peace to you, sister.
In times like this we have to take care of ourselves. The Ozzis say “you are the no.1″. Though we have to treat not only
our soul but as well our body and face. Don’t know your products but I’m sure they are good for your sensitive skin.
With Glossier you use the best product on the market for enhance eyebrows. I learnt about this company from Youtube but can’t unfortunatey not buy it in Europe. Instead I discovered Anastasia eye brow pen and I am more than surprised about the perfect result. Anyway it is not easy to grap the right colour because latter has too many.
But yes, kindness and a smile does the best thing on your face. My husband always say”happy women are the prettiest”. Too true. Personally I noticed whenever I am upset or feel sad, I can’t do the best make up and wear the
nicest clothes, it doesn’t help. Enjoy
Author
I want to try an eyebrow pen – my brows are quickly disappearing! Thanks so much for reading and adding to the conversation here. 🙂
I AM 67 YEARS OF AGE, AND SHALL ADMIT THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT I WOULD DO OVER AGAIN IN MY LIFE, AND MANY THINGS I WOULD AVOID, BUT ONE THING FOR SURE I WOULD NEVER WANT TO BE YOUNG AGAIN, AS THE WORLD OF TODAY!!! PEOPLE HAVE SUBJECTED THEMSELVES TO ONE COMPLEX LIFESTYLE AFTER ANOTHER, AND A PERSON WOULD BE SURPRISED AND SHOCKED TO SEE WHAT IS OUT THERE.
THERE IS A PROGRAM THAT MY HUSBAND AND I WATCH ON THE YOUTUBE AND I BELIEVE IT CAN BE VIEWED ON TELEVISION AS WELL, IT IS CALLED PATERNITY COURT, THIS PROGRAM I WOULD ADVISE ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO LISTEN TO OF ANY AGE, AS IT DEPICTS THE MESS SOCIETY HAS INFLICTED UPON ITSELF; INCLUSIVE OF THE FACT, IT IS A REAL EDUCATION AND EYE OPENER. IT IS A REALITY COURT SHOW AND WITH REAL PEOPLE. IT IS WORTH THE WATCH! JERRY SPRINGER OFFERED A VALUABLE SERVICE AS WELL, IN OPENING OUR EYES TO THE MANY COMPLICATED/COMPLEX LIFESTYLES THAT PEOPLE OFFERED THEMSELVES. IF MY LATE PARENTS WERE ALIVE TODAY, MY FATHER WOULD BE 103 AND MY MOTHER 108.
Author
I hear you. Society has become so complicated, and there is perhaps too much info coming at us constantly thanks to technology. Unfortunately, we are not evolving at the same rate as technology so adaptation is complicated as well. Peace to you.
Love your words. I get antsy and want to get out but know I have to honor my body. I was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and just finished with 4 treatments. I too am thankful for healing and my tribe of family. I have reorganized my containers as well and donated or sold a bunch!
I pray your family continues to heal.

Thank you, friend. Congratulations on finishing treatment! Thinking of you as you journey toward greater wellth and peace. xox
Thank you for such an informative post. My ears always perk up when the “over 50” topic comes up. Now I have some new anti-aging weapons to add to my arsenal. Was reading about your health updates and in particular, the pancreas. Not a doctor, but as someone who went undiagnosed for years, I found some relief with prescription digestive enzymes: Creon. I also had a problem with digesting fat and had a number of nutritional deficiencies which included all of the fat soluble vitamins: particularly, vitamin D. Once that issue was resolved, (18 month later), My joint pain became much more tolerable and night vision issues disappeared. Am hoping that you get the answers and treatment you desire. <3
Author
Thank you so much! It always feels so comforting to be joined by someone who understands the struggle firsthand. So glad you are now absorbing the vitamin D you need and enjoying better health. I have been relying on the prescription enzymes Zenpep since 2018 and also take vegan digestive support enzymes with every meal. I will definitely check out Creon. Thank you so much, and peace to you.
Wonderful and insightful words. I hope your potential diagnosis gives you some comfort in the knowledge, but continue to keep you in my prayers for more good days than bad. May your journey continue to be a positive force in your life and in those that know you and/or read your thoughts and musings. Stay strong my friend YOU’VE GOT THIS!
Author
Thanks so much for your encouragement, friend. YES, more good days than bad would be wonderful, and I hope to give my all on all my days so that nothing is wasted. xox
