We’ll explore a few lovely modern touches in these European Country designs. The common denominator for these interior and exterior moments is architecture by Houston-based Kirby Mears (MMA). If you are building or renovating a home, perhaps an architectural element, interior design idea, or color story here will inspire your own scheme.

Modern Touches in European Country Designs
What a dream to build something new honoring the past yet customized for modern living.

It’s a treat for me personally to see Old World finishes since I live in a sleepy small town where home builders don’t seem to understand or honor them.

If you subscribe to MILIEU you may remember Eleanor Cummings’s beautiful modern French vacation home near Round Top featured years back. What a memorable kitchen with French baker’s table, open shelving, long stretch of windows, and a timeless mood.

Another home appearing in MILIEU that is a favorite of all time? Designer Jill Egan’s own home:

So many exquisitely elegant moments with its mix of modern art and lighting with Belgian minimal style.

I love all these pale interiors and exteriors and find they usher me into a meditative state of mind.

Pale grey with creamy white and touches of pale blue? Yes, please.

But a sunny stone with pale blue-grey shutters works magic on my mood too!

The warmth of wood antiques and design elements (like the ceiling, below!) bring a cozy feeling of age and character.

Sophisticated Simplicity and Understated Grandeur
And have you noticed the beautiful plaster finishes by Segreto? Oh, what lovely work this firm delivers!

As a real life renovator, I can attest to the level of craftsmanship required for minimal interiors with an absence of traditional window trim, baseboards, etc.

The finishes of the walls and all the places they meet with windows, ceilings, and floors must be perfect!

I’m also reminded of how much elegance is born when reclaimed materials (old stone or hardwoods imported from Europe via Chateau Domingue!) are incorporated into the design.

A “distressed factory finish” can sometimes be charming, but an authentically aged finish from hundreds of years of use and love? Hard to beat.

This luxurious timeless bath by designer Jill Egan in her own home captures the sophisticated simplicity so many of us long to emulate.

Don’t you love the juxtaposition of modern lighting and clean modern lines for the vanity?

An arched door is oh so welcoming!

The shutters within Eleanor Cummings’ farmhouse? Rustic yet crisp and delightful.

The delicate nature of the stair rail is the stuff of my dreams!

And can we discuss this glorious front door (above)?
