The ground will likely be covered in snow, and layers of wool will again be needed. Shearling lined slippers won’t leave my feet, and the fireplace will warm me to the core. I feel as though many breakfast nooks, reading nooks, and bunk rooms don’t get their proper due when captured in photos. It is difficult to convey with a single picture how inviting, cozy, and romantic they truly are. Same goes for bathroom spaces since they are small and difficult to photograph.
What may appear too small and cramped can often be just right in person. By now, we should all know that photos do not tell the entire story.
More and more, it seems Americans are beginning to expand their notion of what a kitchen can be. Why must we relegate it to utilitarian categories and design them primarily for chores, storage, and function when form is so important to daily living with beauty, with light, with romance?

I am always intriqued when a rustic exterior is paired with more elegant interiors.

Maybe not the “rustic cottage” aesthetic that instantly springs to mind, but we’re in dream mode, oui? We’re considering the range of fantasy getaways where unusual color stories, architecture, and imaginative pairings unite.
There’s an interesting tension created designers refer to as ‘clashing.’ The idea of intentionally clashing colors is lost on most in mainstream America, but if you consider high end designer interiors, you may begin to recognize it.
If given a choice, would your ideal mountain retreat feature a particular color palette? Would it be a reflection of nature’s calmest neutrals? While the example below is not a cottage nor rustic, the colors and moldings might be just right for my own fantasy.

When “Cozy” Means Teeny Square Footage
I’m always intrigued by projects with limited square footage, yes? Here’s an apartment which may get you scheming. The floor plan could be smart for a lakeside cottage or cabin in the woods:
The closest we came to imagining a rustic luxe cottage was our prior renovation of a neglected 90s home in the woods. There were a few rustic design elements included in our purchase, but I had to create a plan to integrate the disparate styles which did the house and setting no favors.
The snow outside my windows just now, frosting trees, glistening as diamonds, blanketing the prairie…is something I can’t imagine leaving if ever we leave the heartland. It only becomes more special as I age.
I don’t have many “warm and cozy” interior glimpses of our former home since I lightened up the place with pale tones. This sideboard moment from a few seasons ago felt cozy to my eyes.
Personal Reflections on Dreaming and Escapes
Thank you kindly for dreaming with me. It is a quiet escape to imagine these dreamworlds when we can admire without a need to acquire. If thoughts of jealousy, comparison, and resentment arise, such imaginative daydreaming may be unhealthy for your journey. There is certainly discernment necessary, and only you intuitively know what helps or harms you.
These days, I am intentional about self-compassion and social media consumption. Same goes for texting and unstructured time. I am my best self when creating music and art or connecting with nature, cooking, or stretching my body. Passively consuming content often leaves me vulnerable to despair.
Does any of this resonate? It is confusing as the digital media landscape, artificially “intelligent” interference, expanding modes of misinformation, and clickbait infiltrate screens in our hands and dopamine levels.
Am I dreaming about cozy cabins off the grid because a wise part of me knows I need more unplugged wonder? Intuition is lovely. May we listen for it.
