As technology ever sculpts the shape of daily life for better, for worse, I find I am drawn more to the real. To the timeless beauty of majestic mountains, oceans, lakes, forests, and unspoiled nature. Inspiration from Architect Jeffrey Dungan reflects the work of an artist who seems not contented by “the real enough.” The beautifully earthy timeless architecture from his firm centers us in authenticity, in wonder.

Inspiration from Architect Jeffrey Dungan
Robin Rains Residence
So inspired by this collaboration which appeared in MILIEU (Spring 2021), I recall creating a reel as I leafed through the article featuring this unforgettable home. (Search my IG feed for it if you like…and please follow. This old girl cannot seem to get to 6K followers.)
A restrained color palette only heightened the delight of the work for me!
Glimpses of Earthy Timeless Architecture
When a reverence for the outdoors is paramount in the architecture, how can a mistake even be made with the decor and interior design?
There’s a hushed elegance that flows from such thoughtful selection of materials.
And while the process for these extraordinary projects must be a winding path of complexity and hidden details, their completion reflects an unmistakably elegant simplicity.
And also a hushed quality. Don’t you love such whispers? While I’m not declaring any new year resolutions, I ever aspire to become a better listener.
Dungan says if you listen closely enough to a site, the house will almost design itself.
And surely this has been true on a much smaller scale in our renovations.
Listening in a deliberately contemplative manner involves detachment from self.
Detachment from the weather of emotions storming and shifting in my inner landscape.
That’s a high order for such an ultra-sensitive feely feeler, doncha know. 🙂
But such intentional detachment from: ego, emotional baggage, and the old allows a fresh lifegiving creativity to blossom.
What beauty arises from deep listening?
What love may grow?
If my reflections detract from the lovelieness of the work here, please forgive.
For me, viewing timeless design as meditative fine art feels healthy for the senses and soul.
Jeffrey Dungan Architectural Authenticity
What will it require to listen better as the noise of modern life disrupts the music?
The only path I know through the noise and pollution is daily practice.
Daily returning to an infinite flowing source of goodness.
No matter how my life twists and turns, I find I am drawn to a timeless store of love that is ever flowing.
Even after all these years, I am awed it still flows.
Yet even after all these years, I am prone to wander and forget.
That’s a wonder too! It reveals I am not only free to choose Love and Beauty just once. I’m free to choose it every moment.
What love is so relentless and bountiful as that?
Kitchen With Earthy Elegance from Jeffrey Dungan Architects
As ai penetrates every layer of media these days, I have to giggle when followers at times mistake the real thing for a virtual fantasy.
Because sometimes the real seems more sculpted and dreamlike than we can imagine!
Nature is an awesome wonder.
I love the pared down elegance of this architect’s aesthetic.
Such playfulness with light, with form.
And scale!
The architect shared these reflections last year…
“I get really into the details of the homes we do with our creative team and clients and love all the collaborations.”
“Some moments are the big ones we obsess over…
but I also love the little moments…
where it’s more quiet and the light moves in a certain way.”
Architectural Movement & Moments of Quiet Beauty
His work is reflective of what I would describe as gentle grandeur.
Since we recently returned from a trip to the Southwest where the wonder of deep canyons and breathtaking mountainscapes always changes me, I feel especially connected to cosmic beauty.
The grandeur of this planet, galaxy, and universe shimmers with majesty.
And our being here is a miracle.
But it’s a miracle we easily forget as we busy ourselves to avoid stillness and quiet.
How will you slow down to notice gentle grandeur scattered around you to prosper you?
