While we are busy working on various renovation projects in the kitchen, I have begun thinking about how I will decorate the bedroom since we haven’t had a moment to do a thing. What does my own dream timeless tranquil bedroom look like? While this is a country house on the edge of a forest in the Midwest, it need not be woodsy. We want it to be restful, understated, and poetic. My favorite bedrooms are tranquil, unfussy, natural, serene spaces influenced by modern French, California cool, Belgian chic, and coastal classicism.

Timeless Tranquil Bedroom Inspiration & Ideas
Classic Coastal Bedroom With Tranquil Blue
Here’s a beautiful bedroom suite to inspire from last year’s Southern Living Idea House (with design by Sarah Bartholomew):
Isn’t the bed fabulous? And the blue-grey trim color (Sherwin-Williams Silver Lake) is one to file away. The bathroom is every bit as elegant!
That floor is so unexpected and warms things up so much. Wait until you see how the soaking tub was wrapped…
If you’re after a classic coastal look, you can’t go wrong shopping for inspiration and the goods at Serena & Lily:
Timeless Yet Modern French Bedroom
Interior designer Jill Egan has an unforgettable bedroom in her own home that is not short on drama or style yet somehow feels restful:
Another elegant bedroom designed by Marie Flanigan feels European inspired and as though it would never look dated:
Brooke Giannetti’s bedroom at Patina Farm is a study in understated rustic elegance. Her ability to mix Swedish antiques with organic natural materials that improve with age inspires!
Best of all, we are treated to a masterclass in all things PATINA wonderful in each of these books by the Giannettis:
We can always look to chic hotels in Paris to deliver authentic modern French style! Look at this understated guest room with spectacular paneled ceiling at Hotel Chateau Voltaire:
California-Inspired Minimal Luxe Bedroom
Beautiful, functional, neutral, organic, California-inspired laidback luxe is a look that is easy to love and just as easy to live with. Jenni Kayne is a stylemaker with collections that consistently win me over:
The quality is high at Jenni Kayne, and her pieces are made to last.
Did you see this story with Amber Lewis designs? Her California-inspired bedrooms feel so natural and beautiful.
I love her collaborations with Loiloi, and I showed you my pillow and rug designed by Amber here:
My bedroom at our former home featured a rustic reclaimed wood statement wall. Will it still feel timeless in a few years? Not sure, but it will still feel appropriate to the style of that home and its location tucked within soaring trees.
Bedrooms With Belgian Chic Style
Some of my favorite bedrooms have a Belgian-inspired feel, and perhaps the most influential figure who continues to inspire is Axel Vervoordt:
The bedroom above was designed by Vervoordt for Calvin Klein’s Miami home.
Desiree Ashworth (Beljar Home) creates stunning bedrooms with Belgian influence like the one above.
Belgian linen on the bed and furniture is a fine place to start if you’re after that look.
How to decide on a design direction with so many gorgeous possibilities?
