If you’re like me, getting mostly stuck inside (as cold weather punishes) creates a tension. There is all of this creative energy that builds up. Where does that unexpressed tension go? As someone who thrives with order, I feel compelled to organize. Closet Hacks & Tips to customize a walk-in closet provides motivation and visual inspiration to get moving. Let’s face it. Energies can plummet in the winter. Even though I truly desire to get those spaces organized, my joints, muscles, and physical limitations have somethin’ to say too! (Does thinking about organizing qualify as progress?)

CLOSET HACKS & Tips to Customize a Walk-in Closet
Emotional Prep Before Lifting a Finger
It helps to first get centered in your intentions when it comes to bringing order to closets and drawers. Our personalities and organization styles vary, and I am not someone who can dive right into disorder to begin sorting.

It takes a strategy where I first get my head on straight about why the investment of time and energy makes sense. How do I hope to feel in the end? And how will clearing clutter to create efficiency bring ease to daily functioning, to my wellbeing?

Once I have the picture of more calm order in my head and a feeling for the vibe, mobilization can begin.

Another piece of the emotional preparation? Recalling how corralling all of the chaos to welcome more order IS NOT A RACE.

In fact, creating effective organization systems that make sense for your unique needs trumps simply executing quickly an arbitrary organization plan.

That moment I acknowledge I don’t have to rush? When I remember there is no deadline? I can get to work with a spirit of ease and calm.

A liberating force may overcome mental obstacles to get started. I’m not suggesting everyone needs such mindful preparation. My sister simply leaps right into any and every disorganization fire in a boldly embodied way, bypassing any cognitive obstacles!

Calm Chaos Into Order
Just a reminder it’s not a small thing to decide to trade chaos for calm.

By creating calm you’ll bring more ease to the everyday. You’ll create space for the beauty of what’s new. (Beauty may come as the beauty of donating objects, clothing, and collections that bless others.)

Simplicity of Natural Seagrass + White Shelves
Were money no object, I would commission custom solid wood built-ins for all of my storage needs. Custom fabric drapes would soften the look and conceal anything fussy looking. However, my closet budget allows for modular shelving units and white wire shelves.

A custom detail to warm these sterile modules up? Woven baskets. The secret is limiting yourself to just one or two different basket styles. It is one more way to get a calm look.

Measure your shelves/cubbies before choosing the proper size baskets. If you find a particular style you love, buy enough since uniformity is the goal and the exact style may not be available in the future. Here are a few ingredients I mixed in 2023 for our bedroom’s walk-in closet:

Turn an Underused Room or Bedroom into a Family Closet
One of the first renovation projects we tackled here at the Georgian was a dressing room closet. The full story is HERE.

With this closet module design, we added organization and storage while leaving enough space for a bed, vanity area, and work area.

I didn’t want the space to lose its identity as a bedroom for resale. (We also didn’t disturb the existing closet with bifold doors and a narrow linen closet you can’t see in photos!)
What a transformation of function and design, and what a testament to how an awkward room can become a multipotentialed flex space.

Don’t overlook the potential of a strange, under-utilized space in your own home for a “family closet” or “closet-office.”

Closet & Bedroom Organization Resources
If you’re not a DIYer or interested in closet modules like mine, there are plenty of readymade pieces to consider. Maybe you only need more drawers in a bedroom:
Isn’t that a lovely piece that looks antique?
Psst. Need an idea for a similar linen skirted armchair perfect for a dressing room, walk-in closet or bedroom space? This one has a surprisingly competitive price point:
If you have a walk-in closet with space (or potential for space with a section of wire shelving removed), would a dresser and mirror help it feel and function like a dressing room?
While this dresser may not be appropriate for a grownup bedroom, it might work well in a dressing room or family closet or even a craft room to organize the stuff of life.

Slow & Steady Progress
I’m soooo done with saving the world in a day!! Frantic mode is costly and requires too much adrenaline. Steady and small gestures will do.

Even short bursts still lead to completion and to the joy of more calm and order.

Actionable Ideas Inspired By Dream Closets
When clothes get mindfully hung with like colors together…oh, my! Also, aren’t the picture lights clever if you will be renovating or building new?
Call me compulsive, but a sea of white can be a glorious sight…

As if a peninsula counter in a shop-like closet wasn’t remarkable enough, isn’t the color combination beyond too?

Just in case you were aggravated there were no realistic organization hacks for the non-wealthy:
Of course I have to return to the Giannettis’ brilliant storage solution in their Patina Farm bedroom’s dressing area. Belgian linen panels hang from unlacquered brass rings and rods. Who needs clunky closet doors when you can have silent softness?

In the dressing room of our French country house, I covered the wall with a gorgeous stenciled Fortuny pattern, and it took only a couple of hours. Best of all, I never tired of this look. I found the stencil HERE.

If you have a spacious closet or dressing room, I can imagine a table like this surrounded by readymade white modular shelves and hanging storage.
