The grass is still electric green here, and there are flashy red and orange Halloween lights splattered everywhere around this town. Soon enough, brown, gold, and rosy tones in the landscape will emerge as autumn reveals its splendor and the holiday season inches closer. It used to be more of a challenge to intentionally carve out quiet, slow living, meditative moments in my day to center the heart and mind. Now, the moments arrive more naturally, more instinctively as seasons change and nature’s beauty prompts. I hope these glimpses of Cozy Gentle Autumn Colors & Cozy Fall Vibes provide the sweetest escape and soothe you right where you are.

Gentle Autumn Colors & Cozy Fall Vibes
With these color story posts, I always have us homebodies in mind.
We notice mood and seasonal color shifts as our shelters and rhythms mirror nature’s.
With the expansiveness of the internet, who can say how cozy gentle autumn colors and schemes will somehow influence interior landscapes and artful creations?
So many ripples of inspiration online, and yet here we are connected.
If you are feeling vibrant and energetic, maybe a palette in this spirit suits you:
In any case, I hope the days are being as gentle with you as these colors are.
(Above: Loi’s gentle autumn Maine home inevitably gives cozy von cozy vibes!)
Gentle Autumn Colors & Subtle Fall Touches
It was three autumns ago we bought our Georgian home and began to think about parting with the fixer upper transformed from top to bottom.
At the time, still living in that home so perfectly cozy and complete, we began to deconstruct our next home.
Each night after we worked our daily jobs, we would tackle a bit of this, a bit of that. Painting the staircase, wallpapering, building walls, dismantling a powder room. Beginning with the entry, we progressed toward the kitchen renovation.
It was truly a sweet rhythm in spite of new aggravating health symptoms for me.
There was a sense of moving through problems to excavate and create beauty.
Living with gentle whites and the cozy of greige and tranquil greys (including grisaille wallcoverings) soothes me.
The dramatic moment in our entry above is as busy and saturated as I can tolerate, and it works for us since it’s a pass through sort of moment.
Color Preferences Shifting With Aging & Time
I also admire earthy gentle autumn colors and muted neutrals in this spirit:
Years ago, I loved decorating in autumn with large fall wreaths and centerpieces.
In recent years, it’s more about smaller, subtle touches such as white pumpkins, gourds in pastels…
faded green and pinks in dried hydrangea, blushy nostalgic vignettes…
and bits of gentle texture.
Is Fall Decorating for You?
I don’t change my decor drastically across the seasons, but it always feels natural to bring in touches of nature.
Dried hydrangea from the garden are swapped for white roses. A few pumpkins, gourds, simple branches, mums on the porch, and lit candles feel right as the days shorten.
This mat would have been perfect on our former porch above:
or this one…
Less Can Be More in Autumn
Colors in autumn come and depart quickly, making them all the more precious. Thank goodness life on earth includes Bettie Bearden Pardee:
Isn’t that a most elegant gourd-geous autumn entry with a dialed in color story?
All the yeses!
What will you bake this fall? You know I can’t get enough nibbles of apple crumble, apple muffins, apple coffeecake and braided Swedish apple lmpts drizzled with icing.
And apple tarts. What a treat it must be to have an old barn for entertaining to host dinners like this:
We can dream! With so much glorious harvest goodness, who can resist the warmth of a golden bonfire or the promise of a quiet day with mulled cider aromas wafting from the kitchen?
Quieter Gentle Autumn Colors
Layering for fall is a relative matter. I’m a minimalist so my rooms stay spare even when I toss a few pillows and a throw into the mix.
Is orange optional?
Absolutely.
My Zuma rugs look good in every room!
Oh I love all of the evidence pointing to cozy factor with white.
The warmth of this vanity is such an amazing moment in this otherwise cool toned bath:
I could never tire of the baby boos.
Which Fall Colors Speak to You?
Are you a terracotta or russet person?
I do appreciate the color of a golden crust with its toasty brown.
We looked at some incredible bunk beds in THIS, and the mustard colors in the mood board below feel very autumnal to me.
Quiet Autumnal Beauty, France & Nat King Cole
Can you even go wrong with a garland this beautiful, vintage books, and a white pumpkin on a mantel?
Colorful fruit, foliage, and florals are always welcome!
How do you like your fall pumpkins anyway?
(a.) in a cake (b.) in a pie (c.) in a savory soup*
*Here’s an excellent book by Drew Smith, SOUPOLOGY (Rizzoli, 2020) to learn to master six broths which can be turned into 60 soups! Is it too lofty a goal to make 60 soups this autumn?
Or do you like your pumpkin…
(d) as a receptacle for richly hued fall blooms with a sexy split pomegranate reclining seed side up?
(It’s d d d d allllll day for me thanks to French Garden House!!!)
Fill your heart’s desire and score new fantasies with THIS FALL FLORAL SPLENDOR.
Falling for Leaves
Is this your idea of beautiful falling leaves?
or do you prefer this variety:
One of Hello Lovely’s FB followers said she made a corn cob wreath like the one below and watched squirrels leaping to her front door to feast.
Definitely my idea of live autumn entertainment!
Autumn Tables
In spite of so many inspiring tablescapes, I have never orchestrated an outdoor fall party…it’s a romantic prospect though considering how easy Gwen Moss makes it look, oui?
Oh, fall trees, who can compete with your beauty!?! Our sunset maple in the front yard will soon transform to this:
Is deep olive green still trending? Not that we care about trends, but do you like the green background of the quotes in this post? It’s Farrow & Ball’s Green Smoke.
By now you have seen this tone take over social media. She has moved on from this kitchen, but Charlotte Reiss freshened formerly limestone colored kitchen cabinets in her French farmhouse with Green Smoke:
Can you EVEN fathom the warmth of 200-year-old pumpkin-hued hex tile magic as it interacts with the sophistication of the slightly mysterious smoky green? See my story with greens right HERE and sage green HERE.
If you have yet to discover French homewares at Vivi et Margot…your cozy fall socks will be rocked, pumpkin. I love my ivory wool beret from Charlotte’s shop!
More Finds for Fall
If you follow Good Life of Design on FB, maybe you saw the happiest fall wreath on the planet gracing her front door.
Gracious host and talented interior designer, Kathy, shared her Williams-Sonoma find and encouraged us to get this look as well.
Peace to you right where you are.

Is that photo in your house of the book Living Beautifully in Paris? If so, how do you like it? I’m trying to decide whether to purchase it or not but can’t look inside.

Hi Colleen. It is an amazing book which is Mathilde Favier’s scrapbook of experiences and colorful eclectic fashionable moments. It’s real life for her as a figure at Dior, but fantasy life for us. This account shows glimpses of what you’ll find inside the book: https://www.instagram.com/mathildeapariss_/
