Depending on who you ask, modern farmhouse as a design style is either on the way out or firmly rooted. My own opinion is influenced by what I see trending on Pinterest, where searches for country farmhouse interiors and exteriors are only increasing. There’s plenty of grey area since any design style can be executed dreadfully and without taste. Let’s face it…country decor is not going anywhere, yet doesn’t what we used to term “country” easily veer into “modern farmhouse” territory? What’s your take? Can Black and White Modern Farmhouse Design Feel Timeless and not so trendy?

While a major real estate site says the modern farmhouse trend is over, here in the heartland, businesses selling farmhouse wares are booming. Wayfair reports its sister, industrial farmhouse, steals the thunder now.
The NY Times sees modern farmhouse trends diversifying and evolving, and House Beautiful predicts farmhouse style will safely stay put. (Which would not please readers of Apartment Therapy who *no big surprise here* want to see barn doors and shiplap disappear.)
Lord knows everything under the sun falls in and out of favor so you may as well decorate to FEEL GOOD and to FEEL LIKE YOU rather than the avatar marketers predict you are. Right now, I personally want to feel ageless, open, optimistic, and meditative.

Magnolia’s Way With Black and White Modern Farmhouse
Reigning queen of modern farmhouse, designer Joanna Gaines celebrates black and white boldly at the Silos.
When we visited Waco, two years ago, the repetition was everywhere from the market to the bakery to Magnolia Table where we dined before the official opening.

Bright White’s Surge in Popularity
While painting exterior trims black is hardly a new idea to emphasize architectural details, the contrast with bright white sort of is. Two hundred years ago, off-white was just beginning to become a color for house exteriors. In fact, the super whites we see today weren’t even options back then.

History of Painted Exteriors
Before the Industrial Revolution, paint was mixed in small batches from naturally found pigments in the earth such as red oxide or yellow ocher. White paint was reserved for trim.

Black and White Modern Farmhouse Style
Modern farmhouse style often relies on the modernity of black and white mixed with nostalgic, traditional, rustic, and natural elements. The dining area with wood decking, above, is an example of getting the harmony right.
