Classic Bathroom Overview
Why was it a favorite project? Because we started out with a dark dungeon! What we loved most about working on this bathroom project was (1) there was no demo (with all the dust and dumpsters entwined with such territory), and (2) the investment value adding a full bath to our home added for future resale.

Timeless Bathroom Console Sink
The beautiful sink really does set the tone for this bathroom as the splurge item in the space. The other fixtures in this bathroom are fairly standard but highly functional. In addition to keeping costs for the construction project down, we opted for a tub/shower combo unit…super easy to maintain since cleaning shower tile grout is not my idea of weekend fun.

Fireclay Bathroom Vessel Sinks
I knew I would love our new fireclay bathroom sink basin because I had been living with our fireclay farm sink for years and adore it. When we were designing this bathroom, I considered repurposing an antique victrola cabinet which has been in our family for many years as a vanity. My thought was we could place a fireclay vessel sink on top like the examples below.

What Makes This Bathroom Design Timeless and Classic?
While descriptive words like ‘timeless’ and ‘classic’ are subjective indeed when applied to design, for me, they suggest traditional styles which stand the test of time and trends. While we have a modern shower/bath in the space, I used a shower curtain to keep things feeling more traditional and vintage. The etched mirrors add age to the bathroom design, and I even used an antique light fixture in the ceiling. It came out of our very first home we bought and renovated – a Chicago bungalow.
Storage Woes With a Bathroom Console Sink
It is indeed a serious consideration to add a console sink to your bathroom design if you have limited storage. In this bathroom we added to our home, we had enough space to add a deep linen closet as well as space on either side of the toilet for storage of towels and essentials. For additional storage needs, you could easily add a basket beneath the console sink.
While we didn’t add a medicine cabinet to this bathroom, it would definitely be a smart choice since sink vanity storage is lost with this type of console configuration.
Decorative P-Trap for Console Sinks
Console sink bases are wonderful when you want to make a more vintage, airy, sophisticated design statement. However, if your eye goes straight to ugly plastic plumbing pipes underneath…oy! Make sure you know your options for adding a decorative P-trap for plumbing under the console sink so you don’t have to settle for seeing ugly plastic or pvc!

Leggy Good Looks on a Console Sink
Lovely brushed nickel legs lend an airy elegance in the bath, and the built in towel bar spells an opportunity to drape a fabulous Turkish towel.
Classic Traditional Style Brushed Nickel Grohe Bathroom Faucet
When you’re after a classic look and high quality, I highly recommend ‘buying once and crying once.’ All that means is spending a little more on a higher quality fixture so you won’t be replacing it in a couple of years. Grohe’s Seabury 8″ widespread bathroom faucet in brushed nickel has classically simple and serene good looks, and the cross handles feel very 1920s to me. Velvety finish? Check. Superb hand feel? Affirmative.

A Timeless Classic in Hollywood
While this has zilch to do with console sinks, bathroom design, renovation projects, or house tours, it does feature a timeless classic. Carol Burnett is a genius of an entertainer I worshiped as a kid. So here’s an interview with her and Lucille Ball, allowing us to time travel to 1971. Give it a whirl and maybe recall pop culture, groovy attitudes, and fashion happening almost 50 years ago.
Maybe I couldn’t stop watching because I kept feeling surprised! Carol Burnett always did that. She’s hilarious, yet the audience seems not to be laughing as hard as I would expect. When she discusses how family friendly her job is as the star of a television show? I felt like…did I just time travel to Mars!?!
The interviewer in ’71 is of course mostly clueless about his (at the time) socially acceptable misogynistic views and thoughts about ‘don’t you think it’s more fun to hang out with women who prefer the company of men to women?’ Apparently some men felt women who worked from home had little to contribute intellectually beyond chatter about housework chores. Even though this is a mostly lighthearted romp – it’s a fascinating snapshot of a bygone era. There was so much good in the good ol’ days, yet there was also so much that wasn’t. Tell me what y’all think.
