We will tour three different beautiful homes to be inspired by Rustic Spanish Villa Interior Design Inspiration. You’ll notice design elements such as plaster walls, sculptural staircases, rugged raw reclaimed wood, and beautiful old stone. Of course, we’ll travel to Spain for two out of the three, but this first home in indeed located in LA by Leigh Herzig! We have visited the Spanish style home before, but it is truly worth a return tour to score ideas for getting the look.

Rustic Spanish Villa Interior Design Inspiration No. 1
Believe it or not, this was a tear down before designer Leigh Herzig got her hands on it. Firstly, she wanted the Spanish style LA spec house to have “a mix of old-world European and earthy modern California.” Secondly, she took her inspiration from the Belgian interiors of Axel Vervoordt and Vincent Van Duysen. The home’s entry opens to a showstopping winding stair and arched doorway. Walls and ceilings are clad in Stuc Italien, a Venetian stucco from LA company Terre du Monde. Herzig told Remodelista of the plaster, “What we used is completely green and all natural; it’s soft and modern-looking and earthy all at once.”
I love how transparent Leigh Herzig was in the article on Remodelista about this home’s renovation. For example, she discussed how it was important to her to use plaster for the walls, but when money got tight, she improvised with paint for the second floor. Her first choice was black steel doors and windows, but again, the budget couldn’t bear the expense. Instead, she worked with a local custom window/door company to create the look with wood (they painted black) and glass. When designers are generous with such design details, it certainly helps others see the beauty of getting imaginative and staying on budget too.
Herzig put this home on the market for $3.295m in December of 2014. It sold in about a month for close to asking. I checked Zillow today, where the current estimate for the home is $4.127m! How I wish we could see those returns here in the heartland! Affiliate links follow and won’t cost you extra yet may earn me a small commission.

Wood cabinetry in here is repeated from the kitchen. Spanish-style fireplace, stripe Ikea rug, and Midcentury-inspired light, and Choros Chandelier from Circa Lighting. All the pale surfaces, including the coffered ceiling, are Venetian plaster which Herzig tells Remodelista: “It’s actually a beige that reads as white.” Lucite bar cart:eBay. Leigh Herzig Spanish Villa Kitchen
Unique and lovely indeed. Herzig paired plaster walls with custom cabinets and shelves made from reclaimed wood including oak, poplar, and beech from E & K Vintage Wood. Her open shelves are made from extra thick planks of oak. Cabinets by Miguel Matias. Antiqued Brass Hardwares from the Golden Lion. (Design: Leigh Herzig via Remodelista)
In case you need Tadelakt inspiration. For durability, walls and ceiling are clad in Tadelakt Decolakt, traditional Moroccan lime plaster . The material is used in hammams and sourced from Terre du Monde. “Herzig told Remodelista: You really can’t tell the difference between it and the Italian plaster. But it’s completely waterproof—you just clean it with Marseilles soap. Because it’s so durable, I didn’t have to add a backsplash, which gives the room a clean look.” (Design: Leigh Herzig via Remodelista)
The kitchen sink and fridge are situated alongside a central island, topped with stainless steel and an integrated sink. (Design: Leigh Herzig via Remodelista)
Countertops: Massangis French Limestone. Floor: Pierre de Marly French Limestone. Both from Impression, in Torrance, California. Herzig told Remodelista: “I love the color. To me, there was no other choice, if I could afford it. Tile in general is so cold, but natural stone is warm and rugged.” (Design: Leigh Herzig via Remodelista)
Spanish Villa Dining Room
The villa’s dining room has high and low decor. Herzig paired a Saarinen table with Ikea rattan chairs and a Serge Mouille ceiling light. (Design: Leigh Herzig via Remodelista)

Rubbing it with steel wool brings out a shiny, metallic look.” All bathrooms in the house have waterproof tadelakt. (Design: Leigh Herzig via Remodelista)

Black Trim for Windows and Doors
Herzig told Remodelista, “I spent a lot on light fixtures but was more resourceful when it came to the windows and doors. I desperately wanted those gorgeous, big steel-framed doors, but they were totally cost prohibitive. Instead, I worked with Kobi’s Windows & Doors, a custom manufacturer, to create the same look with wood and glass.” (Design: Leigh Herzig via Remodelista)
Spanish Villa Architectural Details
