Antique Vintage Style Bathroom Vanity Inspiration

When you hear “antique or vintage style bathroom vanity,” I wonder what comes to mind?

Because if you automatically think of a plain ol’ box of a cabinet base with so many layers of paint, the drawers don’t glide, that is not exactly where we’re headed today. Rather, we will explore lovely traditional style bathroom vanities (the counter and storage around the bathroom sink) which may in fact be new construction yet have classic style or are created from repurposed old pieces. You won’t see lacquer or anything sleek or glitzy, but you will notice a variety of different design styles represented: vintage, Old World, French country, coastal, etc.

But just before we get into the decor inspiration…

Hello Lovely Studio

Mies Van De Rohe goodness at Elmhurst Art Museum

…some personal yada yada since it’s just me and you chatting here. If you follow me on IG, you know my teen nieces from Arizona are here visiting (and in sync on their back handsprings in that IG video). They are strong, complex, compassionate young women who teach me so much and stretch my heart wide. Both are cheerleading champions whose squad worked very hard to become state champions. Liv just graduated from high school and is a passionate songwriter and performer. Sofi just turned 15, and is a sensitive artist (shhhhhhh, she doesn’t know it yet!). Sof introduced me to the books below by an Instagram poet, and if you care to learn what sort of poetry appeals to feminists her age, take a peek as I am.

Whiskey words & a shovel - box set

Whiskey words & a shovel

I read the first half of volume 1. The young author, Rueben Holmes used social media to successfully launch his writing career. Maybe you have seen r.h. Sin quotes floating around Pinterest. Since I love references to fire and water, this one spoke to me…

Inspirational quote by r. h. Sin. Some women fear the fire some women simply become it. #quote #empowerment #fire #womanhood #rhsin

Spending time with these young women who are in the throes of adolescence at times deposits me back into the memories of my own. Remember the turbulence of 15? The hormonal-riffic charged jolts and emotional rollercoaster of navigating the wilderness between childhood innocence and adulthood?

Sadly We settle For what we're used to... - r.h. sin #quote #rhsin #poetry #pain

These nieces of mine. They are growing stronger. They do not plan to rely on anyone else’s sword.

R. H. Sin quote. The most dangerous woman of all is the one who refuses to rely on your sword to save her because she carries her own. #quote #rhsin #encouragement #girlpower

And this is the part of the post where I must somehow segue from dangerous women with swords to bathroom vanities. But I’m creative, right?

John Ray said: BEAUTY IS POWER; A SMILE IS ITS SWORD. Maybe these vanities are the smile in these lovely bathroom designs.

My own bathroom vanity. Also in photo: a leaded glass antique window allows natural light into our shower and was not permanently affixed so I can choose to take it if we move since I collected it long ago.

In our master bath above, which we created DIY style entirely ourselves, we gutted everything and started from scratch. I wanted not-too-pricey classic white vanities with simple clean lines and which included the sink and top. In lieu of one wide double bathroom vanity, a custom makeup counter joins two separate single vanities. Our DIY bathroom project truly is a mix of high and low. In fact, I think the faucets cost as much as the vanities. Here’s a similar vanity:

Here’s a great repurposed vintage piece used by Sarah Richardson in a bathroom with a wall covered in marble mosaic tile. If you prefer to buy a new bathroom vanity that only looks old, there are plenty of options, and they usually come with the bonus of having smooth sliding drawers.

Old World Repurposed Antique Bathroom Vanity

While not everyone has the heart to use an expensive antique as a vanity, doing so can make a huge design statement in a bathroom.

Here’s a thought…to get this antique, open console look on a budget, consider a new console table that  you can easily customize. Instead of simply searching “antique vanity” online, search “console tables” and see if anything floats yer boat and has the necessary dimensions. Look what I found for less than $200! It is 15.75″ deep which is significantly more shallow than standard vanities, but sometimes something custom is perfect if space is tight in the bath. It’s also a good looking piece for its intended use.

I love how Jenna finds great affordable fixtures for her projects that won’t break the bank.

Here’s a similar flush mount light that could work in any number of bathrooms…I used several of these in the master closet of our prior home.

Hand-lettered quote by L*t (my little sister and mother of my visiting nieces)

My nieces’ mother is my little sister, and she happens to be a talented creative dynamo. Her hand-lettered quotes (created the old fashioned way without a computer or any software!) are beautiful and just one way she expresses herself. Keep an eye out for more of her work because there are volumes of it!

Peace to you right where you are.

This question has been asked out there in blogland numerous times: “If I use an old vintage dresser, table, etc. for a sink vanity, how do I keep it from getting ruined by splashing water?” A good question indeed!

Let’s face it: no matter how careful we are, the bathroom is a place where water’s going to splash about. 😉 If the piece you’re considering to use is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, or if it’s really really special to you and/or your family (such as a family heirloom), you may need to reconsider using it in the bathroom.
If using it as a sink vanity isn’t the best option, and if you have room in your bathroom, consider using that gorgeous piece as storage and a sort of ‘non-water’ prep area (eg. a makeup area).

With today’s array of wonderful waterproofing options (eg. polyurethane applied in several layers), those family heirlooms can be used as vanities. Another option is to find a complete sink/vanity top all-in-one, and install it on top of the dresser, table, etc. thus providing a much better ‘waterproof’ top. You’ve shown some beautiful examples of this here. 😀

I love the idea of using vintage dressers, consoles, tables, etc. for bathroom vanities but one needs to consider all the possibilities of its use in your own home.

Michele, many of the photos shown are some I’d love to have in my own home. I especially liked seeing the Darryl Carter designs 🙂 Thanks once again for sharing such lovely eye-candy for us all.

Love these helpful thoughts! More gold from an expert to accompany this piece. Thank you, friend. Sometimes a powder room is best for those special pieces since they may not receive the daily abuse a main bath takes! xox
