This pretty 1890 cottage with charming country interiors, 11-foot ceilings, and farmhouse style in Brenham, Texas has beautiful budget-friendly interior design by Holly Mathis. This is the designer’s former home, and the cottage has so many lovely details to admire that I doubt anyone would guess there were many restrictions, financial or otherwise. Don’t you love it when a designer spills her secret sources and they don’t require discovering a grove of money trees?
I shared a peek at this home in yesterday’s post introducing a slew of patriotic red, white, and blue interiors and ideas to get us primed for Memorial Day.
There is a breeziness I love about this flavor of modern farmhouse in Holly’s cottage. What makes it modern? Holly did not go overboard with all vintage pieces and antiques here. It doesn’t look too granny or too contrived. She mixed plenty of new decor with the old, and the cool grey color of the walls feels unexpected and fresh. She also sprinkled soft faded reds (do they read warm coral?) and bold blues with beautiful results. I found some pretty home decor suggestions if you care to achieve a similar look (affiliate links follow and won’t cost you extra yet may earn me a small commission).

Farmhouse Decor & Low Cost Decorating Ideas in a Texas Cottage
Budget Friendly Idea No. 1: Ikea Ektorp Sofas in Living Room
Mathis used simple inexpensive Ektorp sofas from Ikea and slipcovered them with custom white slips from Bemz. I love Bemz, and commissioned Belgian linen slipcovers made for my Ektorps at our second home in Arizona.
Budget Friendly Decorating Idea No. 2: Rug Layering
The designer recommends layering smaller, more expensive rugs like this oushak, over inexpensive natural fiber rugs.
Budget Friendly Decorating Idea No. 3: Painted Furniture
Save a piece of vintage furniture from a landfill and give it a makeover with chalk paint.
Budget Friendly Decorating Idea No. 4: Bamboo Blinds
Budget Friendly Decorating Idea No. 5: Mix Vintage With New
Holly Mathis mixes old ironstone with new white dishes to great success.
Budget Friendly Decorating Idea No. 6: Skip the Rug
