French Country Decorating and Garden Ideas to Inspire!

A beautiful collection of inspiring French Country decorating ideas, French Country interiors, and French Country gardens await in this line-up, and if you are a Francophile, I am sure you will find eye candy to delight. A real trip to the French countryside sounds dreamier than a virtual one, yes? I toyed with the idea of joining the Provence Tour commencing in May led by Sharon Santoni of My French Country Home, but too many trips and expenditures on my 2018 calendar made that too tricky. Someday though. I would love to hear from you if you have toured Provence – share all your favorites, please!

Before the parade of French Country lovely, let’s chat, oui? At this moment, I am staring out the windows (at the window seat in our kitchen) and watching April snow–which accumulated just hours ago–melt before my eyes. What a truly magnificent sound this morning when I opened up the patio door to hear the birds singing at the top of their lungs and glimpsed their vivid colors against frosted trees bearing the Spring’s snowfall!

Spring has definitely arrived to my consciousness. I’m eager to organize the house and address so many dusty corners of it. I’m also eager to shed winter pounds from too much comfort food and sitting inside…when you’re ‘fat day’ jeans are tight across the hips, it’s time for cardio. Another sign of spring? The housing market has picked up speed. Soon I will be sharing tips for getting top dollar when you list your home for sale. It has been a long time since I heard hammering noise and noticed new construction of homes in our area, and I am so happy for builders and the construction industry to see new structures popping up! Are you seeing new construction in your neck of the woods?

Wasn’t that Houston mansion home tour from yesterday with its French Country designed interiors by Pamela Pierce an absolute knockout? What a dream to be able to incorporate so many beautiful European antiques, reclaimed building materials, and sublime architecture and design from the finest firms!

I have been crushing on the Schattes’ guest house spotlighted in that post for years and only now wondering if perhaps my husband and I could build something in the same spirit as a primary residence. We love our current home even as we keep improving it bit by bit and do not plan to sell anytime soon. Yet we both are feeling the itch to create something brand new from scratch. Maybe that won’t surprise you since we recently let go of our other fixer upper.

That vacation getaway in Arizona we re-designed taught us some important things about what we want and don’t want in our next home or in a second home. After staying at that ranch home a few times, I quickly realized it was not big enough to live in as a primary retirement residence. As much as I like to think of myself as a minimalist who can live with less (we downsized by half in 2015, and I sold more than half of our belongings), the floor plan just didn’t work adequately for having guests with us, and we had no desire to make structural changes.

The Arizona project also helped me to realize I need more privacy than I imagined. The home we sold is located in a neighborhood mixed with young families and retirees. While children skateboarding down the street right outside the door didn’t phase me in my younger parenting days, it’s not my favorite anymore. Do I sound like an old geezer or what?

So I have been daydreaming about the next home we might create possibly for our retirement years. A French Country home. Where would that home be built? If you follow me on IG, you may have noticed I have been traveling regularly since the fall. A little business, and a little pleasure. I have taken mental notes about places where I can imagine us feeling content. More research is needed for sure, but Arizona is probably still in first place. (And I could have a stucco home there!) What feels like true wealth to me in terms of daily living is plenty of daily sunshine, and what makes him feel like a king is daily golf. How about you, what is it about home, daily living, or your surroundings that makes you feel truly wealthy and prosperous? If “garden” is part of your answer, you’re in for a treat today!

The chair with the cushion ties that go down the chair legs–brilliant. Looks like a ballerina.

I can’t breathe, so lovely are the photos!
A must for my (dream) retirement home is good walking paths, quiet and safe. Can’t leave Houston because grandchildren are here, and they own our hearts. Congratulations on 9 years blogging! Don’t know how you do it, but so glad you do. Thank you.

    • April 10, 2018 / 12:40 pm

Breathless is what we aim for! YES, Tracy. I need good walking paths too! It was one of the draws of that vacation home we just sold. I hear you about staying near family, and I am certain we will want that as well. Blogging is a lot of work, but I am insane enough to actually enjoy it so it’s win-win! xox

I’m so happy to have you here and to meet you, Maude. Thanks for taking the time to share the kind words, and I hope to bring you more French Country and French Farmhouse inspiration! 🙂

I love this post, Michele! The outdoor areas are so appealing to me. I wonder if they used loose gravel or a more solid surface made to look like gravel? In any case it looks so natural and beautiful! Congratulations on moving on to another fixer upper! Can’t wait to see what’s next!!

    • April 10, 2018 / 12:36 pm

Great inquiry, Holly. I’m not familiar with a solid surface substitute. We have used a ton of natural pea gravel here at our home in the courtyard and beds and love it! I must have worded something wrong since we are not moving to another fixer upper! We are in the dream stages of building something new at the moment! 🙂

Are these charming French interiors from a book? If so, I’d love to order a copy. What’s the title?
Hubby and I have been downsizing, too, as we consider options for “senior living.” You help with all your ideas, such as slipcovering a pair of nearly worn-out Queen Anne wing chairs instead of hauling them out to the curb. Thank you!

    • April 10, 2018 / 12:33 pm

Hi Jo! I definitely need to post about beautiful books with French Country inspiration. Most of these images were sourced from Pinterest with limited descriptions. Cote de Texas blog is an awesome resource for French Country. Do you have a copy of PATINA FARM: https://amzn.to/2EAPqHW ? Another beautiful French Country inspiration is Kathryn Ireland’s book here: https://amzn.to/2qlikI0

      • April 10, 2018 / 10:33 pm

Thanks, Michelle. I’ve considered both the books you listed, but neither are as satisfying esthetically as your Pinterest pictures. I’ll just print them out and make up a little scrapbook for myself, if I may.

    April 10, 2018 / 2:39 pm

I realized that as I looked at all this gorgeousness that the gardens were the most appealing images to me. My garden is my happy place. My kitchen counter runs right into the wall of windows. You feel like you’re right in amongst the trees, shrubs, and flowers. That is what would be an important factor in looking to relocate. Enough sun and rain to help everything grow and flourish would be a necessity. I like four seasons but not bitter cold. I think I might be living in the perfect place for me.
That chaise might have to come live in my house. I’ve been thinking of replacing the wing chair in my bedroom for a while now.
    Beautiful images, as always.

    • April 10, 2018 / 4:00 pm

I love reading your descriptions of the loveliness around you, Joanna. What a gift you have. The long winters are killing me here in the Midwest, and someday, I will be happy to trade them in. I can always visit the snow now and again. That chaise is so pretty. My own living room chaise is more modern and and minimal, and I can’t tell you how many times our son has fallen asleep on it! Happy Tuesday, to you, friend. xox

  8. April 10, 2018 / 2:50 pm

A great collection of photos, I am sure it has everyone dreaming, wherever we live in the world. I live in France and it has me sighing and longing for those long lazy summer days, winter was long and spring is being a little temperamental!

    • April 10, 2018 / 3:57 pm

So lovely to hear from you across the miles. French Oasis is such a beautiful name, it begs to be whispered! I hope carefree summer days are right around the corner from you and me – I’m a summer girl, and need my lush greenery, sunshine, and walking weather! xox

You’re “killing me softly” with these images of French Country bliss. I’m so in love with their serenity and beauty. I have been to Paris, but the countryside is what calls my name. The road trip from Paris to Mont. St. Michele is heavenly with the old stone farmhouses along the way. I would love to go back, but next time stay away from the big cities and explore the back roads.

    • April 10, 2018 / 3:54 pm

One of my favorite songs of all time! #robertaflack. I’m ready to go on that trip to the countryside with you, Rhonda! Stay tuned for a South of France apartment with a friendly priced rent! 🙂
