Before we get to a slew of Pinworthy, inspiring mostly white decor inspiration photos of white rooms by Leanne Ford and Erin Fetherston, let’s chat for a minute about white decor, mostly white decor, white on white decor, and the use of white for interior design.

Over the years, I have had hundreds of conversations with style freaks and design geeky readers about white decor, and especially all white or white on white decor. Hot topics? Here are some common ones: Which white paint? (I have an answer for that here.) What shade of white for white cabinets? How is it possible to live with white, have children, and not require sedation?

Just as common though are the exchanges I have with readers about a LOVE AFFAIR WITH WHITE. It seems those folks who love living with white are passionate about it in a way a lot of people I know are nutty about coffee, cats, or corgis. Readers of this blog seem less likely to be obsessed with, say, blue or even the very hot-right-now combination of black and white. But in real life away from the blog, plenty of people have expressed to me freely their discomfort with white interiors and white walls.

White on white decor can be a big ol’ cold and stark disaster or a heavenly backdrop for peaceful memory making, and of course, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

I know exactly when pale, faded neutrals and glorious white captured my heart. It was back in the early ’90s when out of necessity, I was pulling over my car to dive in dumpsters and rescue odd vintage castoffs from the curb. I could hardly wait to get home and transform them with paint, and every bit of the journey to white thrilled me. The rescue, the fact my canvas was free and would not end up in a landfill, the smell of the paint, the paintbrush magic wand in my hand, the layers of ivory pigment, and the DIVINE TRANSFORMATION and romantic recycling of unsightly trash into a visually lighter new creation.

You have undoubtedly shrunk my head in ten ways by this point if you are still reading, and fer shurrrrrrr there are cuckoocraycray synaptic misfires within this fairy’s membranes. But for my love of white, I shall not apologize or retreat!

White is simply magic when it is done right, and two design-savvy artful types: Erin Fetherston and Leanne Ford both tap into something magical, each with their unique white-honoring voodoo. Fetherston is a fashion designer who recently expanded her brand to include home, and Ford is a former fashion stylist who hit the jackpot when her feature in Country Living opened the door to a design career and even her own show on HGTV (Restored by the Fords). Have you renewed your subscription to Country Living? For corn’s sake, a year of issues that will soothe your senses costs a little more than a banana…

Ha!

Erin’s modern California farmhouse style is more feminine and romantic, and Leanne’s quirky modern country designs just hum with a whole-hearted rustic warmth tempered with rock and roll edgy cool. I find Ford’s work so meditative and authentic.

My own style and way with white leans more toward European country with a beachy, spare serenity, and I am rather intrigued by how many novel ways to DO WHITE exist.

Onward then with the parade of white decor ideas. I could not resist adding shopping suggestions because, well, this has become my challenge, and it thrills me to locate the objects of our affection and save a bunch of shoppers the time and inconvenience. Aside: The very first kitchen chairs I ever purchased for myself were Marcel Breuer Cesca chairs for my first apartment as a freshman in college. I was 18 and over the moon to find them at a garage sale.

2. I am smitten with Saarinen style tables like these.

Favored by both Erin Fetherston and Leanne Ford, I actually snagged a vintage original for a design project I worked on a few weeks back in Clearwater Beach. Imagine me in an SUV with my designfreaky companions, shouting STOP THE CAR! and sprinting to where I saw it near a dumpster at a thrift store. My companions have maybe never loved me more. Yes. It was exactly the right size and just what we wanted for the design!

My 21st birthday gift from mum and dad (we are talking 1983, I’m so old!) was a round dining table with
glass top and chrome legs and 4 chairs just like the Marcel Breuer slide chairs in your post. Good design never really dates does it. How good is that nursery BTW

    • March 22, 2018 / 2:20 am

We are so young and so cool! I agree. And I need those chairs in my life again. 🙂

I think the white was a reaction to all the “safe” beige/tan interiors. It was bolder and brighter than beige. The avocado green/mustards of the ’70s and beiges of the ’80s were themselves reactions to the sterile whites of earlier times, which were associated with hospitals, back before hospitals started to decorate.
The success of white doesn’t depend on the quality of the finishes or the items because chippy antiques and vintage (or dumpster) finds can look great and cost nothing, whereas expensive Furniture Store collections can have all the charm of a chain hotel lobby.
Being “decorated” often lacks soul, but so does not having any design aesthetic at all and just buying stuff willy-nilly. There should be a personalization but also curation that keeps the place from being random.

    • March 22, 2018 / 10:43 am

Yes! And I think white can be calming, and being “plugged in” all the time can be anxiety provoking. Maybe we should more often be thinking of decor in terms of say, one’s enneagram number. A lot of us artistic and design obsessed types are 4’s so we feel it’s a given our spaces should have a strong identity and point of view and relationship to the architecture…Yet if I was a perfectionistic 1 on the enneagram, I may need a measure of order and restraint that would make someone else use the word “soul-less,” right? Thanks for adding so much richness here.

I find a little touch of light wood or rattan adds warmth to a white room. Those all white rooms scream interrogation rooms to me. I guess I watch too many crime stories. 😕
I have to take the opposite view of Debbie and say the white nursery, while a beautifully decorated space, seems lacking and cold for your young one. Add some color in the toys and bedding, please! Make it a happy place.
I loved nothing better than finding a great thrifting piece or a roadside find. As you, out came the white paint and voila! A designer piece for my home. My husband would come home to find me in the garage or on the driveway happily tending to my latest find. In ways, I miss that.

    • March 22, 2018 / 10:30 am

Great thoughts, Joanna. I’m still that girl painting junk! White or white on white definitely pushes buttons. Really good point about decorating kids rooms. My sons’ rooms were always bold and colorful because that is what they loved. I automatically (mentally) factor all the colorful kids items into the mix when I look at that nursery since professional photos typically aren’t capturing a lifestyle moment as much as a vibe or a particular product for sale. And it seems what a lot of viewers are craving IS that unmade bed, the scattered toys, a more undone chic, and authentic livable spaces they can imagine themselves in. I actually love the topic!

I am a lover of white rooms too. White is so relaxing, so clean, so fresh!

I cannot say exactly when I fell in love with white interiors but they truly are livable even with kids and pets. We currently have 3 dogs that do tend to leave their mark 😉 But my motto is “I see the dirt, I clean the dirt.” 🙂

I must admit, though I like the former owners choice of a very light carpeting in the LR, with the dogs I’m eager to change that out to some hard surface flooring. The same carpeting was in our master BR covering oak hardwood floors. We ripped out the carpeting and painted the wood white. The rest of the room is designed in white as well and we couldn’t be happier with the look! (Unfortunately the wood was not in good enough shape to leave ‘as is’ and having done floor refinishing ourselves in our former home, we chose not to get into that long and messy project here.)

Bring on the blog posts with white rooms! Yay 😀

    • March 22, 2018 / 1:34 pm

Yay that we have you here adding to the beauty! So happy you enjoy all the white rooms. I love that you painted your wood floors white – some folks cannot fathom the bold genius in that, and it makes such a strong design statement. I love your motto, and I live by it as well. The idea that a particular color or fabric print is more forgiving is at times lost on me since if there is soil, I want to swiftly address it rather than ignore. And light fabrics today are forgiving and easy to clean! Scotchguard has been around for years, right? *I’m stepping off my white soapbox. 🙂

Ah, we are two of a kind Michele! 🙂 I wanted to add something to those who think white is ‘bad’. 😉 For years since I was little (I grew up on a cattle ranch) all I heard was “use dark colors; they don’t show the dirt!” UGH!!! Really, you want to “hide” the dirt that is obviously there and definitely needs to be cleaned? Nooooooooo! (haha!) Stay on that white soapbox Michele! I’m right there with ya. 😉

        • March 22, 2018 / 9:34 pm

Ha! You’re delightful, and that’s the spirit! 🙂
